I am way behind in my Not-a-Blogging, I know.
Along with a thousand other things.
I was traveling in Europe from July 15 to August 15. I do not travel with a computer (never have), so I had hoped to catch up before I left… but it was hard, hard. The first half of my year was pretty miserable, dominated as it was by the death of Howard Waldrop on January 14. I have read with great interest and a touch of sadness your words about the journey and the year you’ve had. In a world full of uncertainties like the one we inhabit, sometimes a journey through distant lands and a respite from constant personal battles are the only way to find some peace.
I understand well the burden of losing such a close friend, and there are no words that can truly console in times like these. Howard Waldrop seemed to be a man worthy of admiration, and his passing leaves a void that only time can attempt to fill or heal.
Regarding work, there is no greater enemy than stress itself. Sometimes, the projects into which we pour our heart and soul seem to consume us more than we would like them to contribute. However, the creative and insatiable mind always finds its way, despite the obstacles. I am sure that the pages you have written have the depth and quality that only you can provide, George.
Regarding your trip to Europe, often the best memories come from unexpected adventures and those spontaneous moments when we step away from routine. I am glad to know that you found some relief amidst the chaos.
Finally, to the challenges life presents us, there is only one tangible answer: to move forward with the same spirit you have shown so far. Even with accumulating problems, the mind and heart of a writer never cease to seek, imagine, and create.
I hope you find, in the inevitable return to routine, some of the same inspiration you discovered on your journey.
Sincerely,
Tyrion Lannister.
