Wow, your nuanced grasp of the topic and the clear statement of your position has convinced me to correct my view of this issue!

Elizabeth Nothing blessed about destroying this Great Nation from the top. Does not matter if you "like him" or "Support him" or "hate him" we cannot allow the misuse of our judicial system for votes, and scare tatics.

We "little people" continue to allow them to turn us into a Banana Republic so that we can join a group and take a handout. Not one party but both are getting richer because war is profitable for the politics and big corporations.

They are getting richer on our backs and we just kneel in fear and allow them to construct our Matrix, our prision. This is one of the reasons I loved TNG because I had hoped in my life I would see us get past the stage that all nations on top hit, where the people want handouts/socialism in place of freedom, they want it easy instead of good (human nature, I guess). Where the Government is not all corruption but actually cares about its people.

message 4: by Onionboy (new)

Onionboy You're right, it is NOT a matter of if you "like him" or "hate him", it is a matter of "did he commit these crimes or not." He had a completely fair opportunity to defend himself in court, and he was not able to convince the jury of his innocence. The prosecution was able to convince the jury of his guilt on all 34 counts.

I guess where we differ is this: you see the failing of our nation as people receiving help from the government. I see the failing of our nation as when fascists take control of power.

Elizabeth I get where you are coming from, if he got a fair trial, I would agree 100% but I am not convinced that is what happened, So it looks wrong from that point of view. I know there are a lot of arguments on both sides, but in justice there should not be two ways to see the basic laws.

I think our whole judicial systems is borked... I was a juror once on a trial that most of the others in the room were not interested in a fair trial for the drug dealer but a stick it to the police. (years ago) I have seen how fast that goes bad if you object to voting a man not guilty when he was guilty (clearly established). It was a lawyer causing that whole issue (long story). I was not sure I was safe in that juror room for two days. It is a horrible feeling. I would not have felt better knowing the president of the US was holding a rally outside of the court house with a famous actor. Social justice warriors are not nice if you do not agree.

I do believe we have watched a fascist take control of our government/country Unfortunately, he has all the support of the corrupt that serve (both sides). I think if we the people continue talking to each other, we will find we are not so far apart on what we want in a Country, it is just the media and select figures that keep us feeling like we are really divided.

Most Americans just want to live, raise their family and build a community. We are not as far apart as we think.

Kathy He had the opportunity to testify and defend himself but he did not, why? Why not get on the stand and say you're innocent that you didn't knowingly participate in a conspiracy to suppress freedom of speech and the free press? Sure it's his right not to testify but why? Why say it's rigged when his attorney put on hardly any witnesses? This case was brought by the State of New York and not the justice department so why does he attack Biden and not the governor of New York? I think his behavior seems deranged.

You are parroting the nonsense trump himself says..."destroying this nation" but it's all projection. It's Trump and his cult that are destroying democracy, spreading hate and sowing division on a crazy scale.

Liberals didn't make Trump commit his crimes. They didn't make his dozens of hand selected, inner circle, of the "best people" commit all their crimes either. The fact is Trump is a convicted felon and multi convicted fraudster and he surrounds himself with shady criminals because he's a shady criminal. Admin with record guilty pleas and convictions...liberals didn't do that, that was Trump and his people. All criminals.

This trial was fair and open and Trump had all the given opportunities to defend himself for his crimes. Sadly almost every witness for or against Trump is a criminal or shady mofo in their own right, which should give you another hint. Trump couldn't have Allen Weisselberg (the other witness besides Cohen) because he's busy doing time for his other Trump crimes and a documented purjurer. Cohen has been his fixer for a long, long time and is no hero of the people and a POS in his own right but Trump chose to have him in his inner circle because of that, not in spite of it. They are all a pit of criminal vipers who some have turned on each other as the ship sinks.

But yes, our justice system does need reform. Maybe not in the way you suggest if you think Trump was convicted because it's broken ... For once a rich connected person was actually held accountable. The jury finding his defense weak and it was beyond a reasonable doubt he committed the crimes. Easy as that. Stop listening to his lies in front of the courthouse for the cameras and look at the actual evidence and resulting judgement instead.

A conman that has been convicted of fraud already half a dozen times, already been convincted of sexual assault and now convicted of many felonies. Then used all that to play the victim and fleece his cult following for millions by begging for more money non-stop, profiting off his crimes by filling the simple minds.

message 11: by Jo Dee (new)

Jo Dee It was a good day to see the judicial system work. This may be the first time in that man's life he has had to face consequences for his behavior. Trump's entire life he has refused to pay bills he owed, committed real estate fraud, lied and threatened and bullied. This time his thuggish and bullying behavior did not keep him from paying a price. What that price is still remains to be determined. I'll take the small win though, at least for today, he and his ilk have not managed to buy the system we all live under.

Richard Radgoski The trial was fair. A criminal got convicted as a result.

Glen Wight The man has been a criminal all his life as was his father, it is about time he gets to pay for his life of crime, I cannot believe there are people who would still vote for him and they think they are patriots! Patriots don't try to overthrow the government. It is sad to see what this country has been reduced to. The man tried to destroy America at Putin's directive. Because he owes him money, he is a traitor to this country as well as the others who assisted him in trying to overturn the election. Once a con man always a con man.

Sandra Guzdek I do believe we have watched a fascist take control of our government/country

Friend, the fascist is trying to get back in to power this November. You know, the guy who admires dictators from Russia, North Korea, and Hungary, and wants to help the religious fanatics turn the US into a theocracy. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a veiled confession.

message 15: by Cc (new)

Cc I don't think you understand what socialism is. It is not a lack of freedom. It's a desire to take care of everyone. What human nature is, is greedy. It's not fear that keeps politicians in power. It's the thought that we MIGHT be able to get on the bandwagon and get rich like them. But money is not freedom. The freedom to get rich is not freedom. It's just a more gilded (and a smaller) cage. I work in a food bank where 500 people who all have jobs, but cannot afford to buy food once they've paid their rent, come so that they can eat. Only socialism will save them from starvation. They are not lazy, or irresponsible, or just unlucky. They are victims of unregulated capitalism. The volunteers who support our food bank are truly free. They have realized their connection with all of humanity.

message 16: by Cliff (new)

Cliff Wow, whatever happened to let the system work? As long as they aren't fabricating evidence or subverting the Justice system (proof, so others can see, that's what journalism is for), he is being subjected to our justice system.

Could the case be brought for political reasons? Sure, but if he's guilty, the reason is it was brought irrelevant. Public figures are held to a higher standard, or were before Trump, and Subject to more scrutiny. If it gets abused, you have to trust people to see that and use the ballot box to fix it.

Ben Tuthill I’m glad his house of cards is beginning to become eroded between the civil suits, the 34 felonies, and the upcoming trials. I worry that it won’t matter. There is not anything that says a convicted felon can’t be president. His cultist/extremist followers will elect him and we will be forced to cringe as our allies are pushed aside & we get cozy with Russia and China’s Governments. I don’t trust him or his cronies. Recent judicial decisions and political I. Fighting has made me uncomfortable for the direction the country is going.

Carri Wil, I don't know if you read all of these responses...kind of hope not. Thank you though, for the post! If it started actual, intelligent conversation, I would thank you even more!!

I understand not "celebrating", but it was good to "see" a fair trial. I actually read along because I love trials. Real trials. And not just this one; I've watched & followed many.

In following this, I had many doubts about IF they could convict him. Lawyers (neutral & past T lawyers) gave very in-depth analysis on the charges, the evidence & the witnesses. And the law.

But in the end, 12 jurors, with possibly even a "supporter" ALL agreed on every count. I thank them for serving on a jury that had to hear one of the most taxing, distasteful, history making cases ever. Many wouldn't be able to handle that, yet they didn't have even one leave or dismissed. Amazing.
