I don't remember for sure but I think the first book I read was The Secret Pencil by Patricia Ward. I also don't remember much about it except that someone found a pencil. My sole memory is that the protagonist was a boy but I just found it on Goodreads and seems that the protagonist is a girl named Anna. I got it from my grade school library.
