Cheap, cheap! No, not a bird

Some say the Covid pandemic has changed the world forever. Others say they’ve made changes in their own lives. One thing is for sure, it has certainly made a difference. At the moment I am trying to take advantage, in what might be a small window, of getting out and about.

My daughter once gave me what looked like a pack of cards but it was ‘52 Things to Try Once in Your Life’. It suggests various outings but also ways of making a difference in other people’s lives too. Here’s a couple of paraphrased examples:

If an overworked waiter attends to you well and you know they’re not paid all that much, just this once leave a really big tip. It’ll make you smile to think back on it.
It once happened to me. In my teens, during college holidays, I used to be a waitress in a hotel. One day I was left the equivalent of a whole day’s pay and I was allowed to keep it. It made a huge difference to me both financially and in encouraging me.

Dress daringly different one day. On a day when duty doesn’t govern what you wear, try dressing completely differently from usual. A brilliant orange outfit, a hat, or a spectacular waistcoat can brighten the day for those who see you!
As it happens, I frequently see an elderly gentleman around town wearing different outfits such as an oversized hat, a colourful jacket and a colourful bow tie. He carries a walking stick which he swings as he strides along. I have decided he must be an artist. He might not be, of course, but I do so like to see what he’s wearing.

Sage Saying: Many things are opened by mistake but none more than the mouth.
Handy Hint: For fat-free gravy add several ice cubes to warm meat juices. The fat will solidify around these and can easily be removed.
Stress Reducer: Do nothing which, after being done, leads you to tell a lie. (Especially handy if you’ve got a bad memory!)

Walker I am sure the 52 cards have some interesting "challenges" described. I certainly believe in tipping. Another thing I often do is notice a table with a young family or older people and clandestinely ask my waitress to let me pick up their tab. Sometimes I just ask her to pick out a table for me to pick up and they don't know until after I leave. I usually don't ever talk to them or even see them again. If one does this, it should be done as an act of kindness, not for gratitude or recognition.
