One for the team

I just posted a response to J.H. Hexter's essay on Now & Then Reader, "The Historian and His Day." To tell you the truth, it irritated me. The guy was writing in the 1950s and clearly had a little woman at home, to take care of the details, leaving him free to pursue his very important scholarly inquiries from early morning until bedtime, seven days a week.

Come on, who lives this way anymore? Why should we care about this dead white male's opinions?

John Jr. Without having read Hexter's essay, I provisionally agree with your reaction here, but I'm glad I read your response at http://nonfictionbooksblog.blogspot.com/. I submitted a comment there, which should be visible after approval.

Lisa Lieberman Thanks, John. As I said, I found Hexter's essay irritating. Took me back to those not so bygone days of yore when academics was a boy's club -- a white boy's club. I couldn't let the smug tone of privilege that pervades his essay pass unnoticed. Maybe others will be inspired to express an opinion as well and we can start a dialogue on the site.
