Atwill is using a passage from Historia Augusta to uphold the claim that “Jesus and Serapis were the same god.” Atwill doesn’t realize everyone in the field recognizes the “Hadrian Serapis” passage is a late fourth-century forgery. Pretty amateur. See this reviewed here:
