It's hard to remember why I wrote something from that long ago, but of course the kind of society I extrapolated into the future was most definitely around in 1979, in East Germany and elsewhere. As a Christian science fiction reader and writer, attending a conservative Christian university at the time, I was also well aware of anti-Christian sentiment in stories I was reading, and in the culture in general. Put those together, and you have "The Price of Love." It certainly seemed more current when I re-read it than I thought something I'd written as a barely-out-of-my-teens writer would 40 years later!
There was a bit of 1984 in there. At the time of the writing of this story kids in East Germany were still being rewarded for turning in "Class Enemies", but those class enemies were not sent to another planet.
I would be interested in how you, Ed, would comment on your short story from forty years ago.
And thanks for sharing.
