The More Things Change …

Carly Icon

NO THEY DO NOT STAY THE SAME.

Soaps.

I'm sad. I've lost All My Children and One Life to Live and General Hospital is potentially on the chopping block. Suddenly my afternoons are empty from 1 PM – 3 PM EST and I'm afraid it will get worse. My evenings without them on Soap Net are empty. I feel adrift. And if any of you think I'm exaggerating, I'm not. Somehow these shows defined my life, my writing, my days.

I know you're all expecting a long post since this is our first week back, but I don't have it in me. What I would like are suggestions on what to watch, DVR, rent or put on the TV during that blank time during the day. I write to noise. Not music, that doesn't work. I'm so desperate yesterday after Khloe and Lamar I watched an E! special on Snoop Dog's life.

HELP!

Kelli I laughed when I read this at first but it is awful I lost my soap last year (RIP ATWT) and I'm sorry you're writing to E! Hollywood Specials of Snoop Dogs life but I must admit that's kind of funny.

Carly Phillips LOL it IS funny - in a sad kind of way ;) Pathetic. Sorry about ATWT too :(

Tawn I don't watch ABC soaps but I share in your sorrow. Soap operas (for my family/friends) were something you watched because as a kid your mother/aunt/grandmother watched them. Remember when we were kids and you watched what the grownup liked :D Anyway, I'm a DOOL girl so you are welcome to hang out in Salem at the 1:00 hour. There's always the court shows. Hang in there just don't stop writing. If you get really desperate, I'll send you videos of my wild kids....

Carly Phillips Thank you :) I have been watching DAYS since AMC went off the air in Sept. It's 2-3 PM EST that kills me now. ::sniff::

message 5: by Leann (new)

Leann I feel your pain! I work from home a few days a week and that 2 hour block of time is beyond depressing! I've started watching the first season on The Good Wife....not sure what I'll do once I get caught up though. I've tried watching B&B and Y&R but I just haven't been able to get into them....

message 6: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Edmonds My mom watches Y&TR but it you ddn't watch it from the beginning you won't be able to start watching now. That show is not something you can just jump into. Carly have you tried Scrubs or Grey's? Their not close to General but I like them enough. I get off early on Fridays from my job and filling the block from 12 - 5 I always have problems finding something good on T.V, I end up watching outrageous court shows.

I feel for you :(

message 7: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Since I go to bed early for work I don't watch evening shows. I DVR all of them and watch them when I can. There are some good ones out there. I love Justified on FX and Person of Interest on CBS. Husband loves his NCIS and NCIS LA. I haven't watched a soap in 20 years. The only time I did was when I nursed my babies. LOL

message 8: by Jazz (new)

Jazz I love this post! I'm adrift without All My Children and One Life to Live as well. Especially since I also lost Guiding Light and As The World Turns not long before. And it makes it so much worse that SoapNet is coming to an end because it means no hope that old faves like Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, and Hotel will start airing again and watching them all over.

My TV suggestions for you are first and foremost Revenge. No, its not on during that time, but it is a primetime soap and something that you can DVR it and watch at that time if you'd like. Desperate Housewives and Grey's air during that time on Lifetime and so does Ugly Betty on TV Guide Channel, so those are possibilities.

Try getting in to Y&R if you can. It's where I'll direct my soap attention, its close to the same airing time. Not too bad to get into, a soap I've watched for years on and off and now back on again. My best suggestion for getting into a new soap - if you think about it, we all did it at some point, so its quite possible - is to read a few recaps (the shorter ones, not the word for word ones) of the week or two prior to get a feel for what is going on and ask questions on a soap forum for what you don't understand and need to know in order to enjoy.

Good luck! It will be an adjustment without our beloved characters from Pine Valley and Llanview.
