Matthew Fascinating. It's a question I return to periodically, and would love to hear more about! Here's my answer, though I'll qualify that I'm talking about reading books as I engage with other kinds of reading (like blog posts, email, websites, newspapers, etc.) for other reasons:

I read books to quiet my mind; to enjoy a story; to still my body; to get inside the minds of others; to appreciate language; and to be places I cannot be. I also read books for the mental exercise and discipline; for a sense of accomplishment; and as a source of pride, and identity.

K.B. Pellegrino I suppose I could include from your remarks a particular thought I have: I read to enhance my life; in fact to live life well.
