Here I come, 2019!

Happy New Year, everyone!

I'm making it a goal to be more active on Goodreads this year. I was so busy last year with teaching and writing (quite pleasurable ways to be busy) that I didn't keep up with my Goodreads page as I'd meant.

Will 2019 be different? Let's break this down by pros and cons (since I'm in the midst of reading a biography of Ben Franklin, who made great use of pros and cons for deciding on the likelihood of success)...

Pros: I'm not teaching this year, which of course I miss--but means I have more time! Also, I've just finished writing a book, and so I always like to have a good period of reading before diving back into the writing/editing stage of things again.

Cons: I'm notoriously unreliable. Or, I'm reliable at being unreliable?

Hmm, that's a tough call.

Anyway, here I am, and we'll see what happens! What are your reading goals -- not just in terms of numbers, but in terms of kinds of books you'd like to read -- this year?

For me, I have so much great Austenesque fiction to catch up on, and I'd love to read a few good histories and biographies. I always look forward to reading children's lit with my eight-year-old daughter, and I've heard great things about Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Quartet.

What about you?

Hi, Margaret. Congrats on publishing! What a thrilling experience, right? (Up and down, definitely roller coaster like, at least for me. Good thing I enjoy roller coasters!) What have you found to be the biggest challenges and rewards of the process so far? Do you have plans for what you will write and read in 2019?

Cheers, and happy New Year!

Margaret Holmes Hello Christina, I love the process of writing and rewriting. Seeing my novel in print was wonderful. A real thrill. The challenge for me is the selling, publicizing side of it. I am a typical English woman taught from childhood not to "show off" or boast. I find it all very difficult. I do not like roller coasters. I prefer to watch others enjoying it from a comfortable chair. I have nearly finished my next novel. Another one set in 1817 England. I do love history. I have two books that I am reading at the moment. One is a history of Cheshire in the Regency period. The other is a whodunnit. As that sort of twist crops up in my historical novels. Lovely to have your reply. Thank you. Margaret

J. W. Garrett Margaret, I didn't know about your book and after seeing your profile and the title, I checked it out on Amazon. I read the sample chapters 1&2 and enjoyed it. I have purchased it and look forward to reading it. I also have one of Christina's so my reading list has increased by two. Congratulations to both of you and I wish you much success in the new year.

Margaret--yes, if only publicizing and selling was not a part of the process. (For me, that's the part of the roller coaster I like least!)

I'm curious about how you've categorized your book on Amazon. I know very little about how this process works, but I'm wondering if keywords and categories make a difference in who sees your book. I also wonder if you might find good suggestions on an indie author's group page (I can send you a message with some groups I found, though I've never been part of them myself, so I can't say for sure they're the best fit). Based on your book description (which is intriguing), your book seems to straddle several different genres, which I think adds to the challenge of publicizing and selling. Let's discuss more via message, if you're interested!

In the meantime, enjoy your reading and writing, and thanks for stopping by!

All the best,
Christina
