I have read 'a hundred little flames' recently. Honestly speaking this book seemed to me Your best work so far.
The idea and plot of the story is superb. I started to keep a journal post reading that story.
Now, the probable answer to Your question -
I think in Your childhood in Kerala, You have observed an elderly relative of Yours, scribbling in a notebook, about the current affairs of his life. The story of Gopal Shanker was explained wonderfully through the Journal he kept.
