You have been assigned a book and was told it is a classic. In fact, the legendary book is considered one of the best. You start reading and keep reading and wonder what part is the best, but you have no choice and continue to read.
You see a book on the bestseller list for weeks and decide to do what every other voracious reader does, read it. As you go along, you wonder what the fanfare is about. Although it is not terrible, nothing seems to stand out including the characters. You are tempted to stop reading and pursue another, but something prompts you to continue. You wonder the following: Are you missing something? Is this the best it is going to be or does the writer have something in stored for you, a twist, a surprise?
Do the questions sound familiar? Well, that is the exact feeling I had reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. The first few chapters were unremarkable, and the writing was stark. To make matters worse, the characters were most dislikable. Yet, being someone who avoids closing books, I was compelled to continue and see what unfolded. I am glad I did. All of the sudden, boom, the book exploded. For those who did not read Ms. Flynn’s ingenious book, I will say no more, but if I had closed the book, I would never have known what all the commotion was about.
Life can be just like a book. If you view it as an assignment, well, it can feel that way because in reality it is, a temporary one. If you hope for your life to be a bestseller even though you have endured much adversity and unfairness, it can be at any point. Yes, remember, assignments are temporary as are best sellers. You just hope they are long-term. Life can be a pleasant assignment even reaching the pillar of a bestseller in whatever form of success you imagine. How so? Hard work, openness and some luck, can help propel you to that coveted position. Right along with this, the ingredients of grit, gratitude and humility cannot be overstated in developing your Book of Life into a bestseller.
Frequently, we hear about people from the most dire of circumstances who rise above adversity to succeed personally and professionally beyond their wildest dreams. Some of those very people live a life of great abundance, but there have been times, when that feast becomes famine. Poor decisions, bad luck, betrayals, whatever it may be, a curve ball has been thrown into their seemingly perfect life. Those who recognize challenges abound, will take a pen and rewrite their life so that their assignment takes a positive turn. To them, surrendering to a negative, static one is not an option. Again, because of their tenacity and recognition about the fickleness of life, they have another chapter which catapults them to bestseller status all over again.
How are you living your life? Even if you are in the twilight, are you using those final chapters to create a bestseller, the best you can be? Since you are the writer of your book of life, you must not get mired in the unfairness and unevenness of the journey. Continue to hone your abilities to overcome obstacles which may impede progress and keep you “stuck.” This may simply but most importantly be examining your life and asking yourself, “Am I striving to be the best I can be as a human being?” If you answer, no, it is never too late to get “UnStuck” and write a new chapter. Try it out. Those around you might be pleasantly surprised. More significantly, you could astonish yourself. If you answer yes along each chapter, keep going. Your book of life will become and remain a bestseller until you leave this earth.
