Good questons, Helen. She is a shy young girl who elopes with a doughboy and becomes a model on 5th Avenue!
My mother bought "Bette" for me many years ago and I loved the story. This past week I found "Chloe" in my local library and knew I had to read it as well. I LOVED IT! I was once a 17 year girl that met a young man and married hastily. I've been happily married for 12 years now, but not without the typical challenges of life. I felt that I could relate very much to Chloe's character.
Becoming a model on 5th avenue seems to give her some much needed confidence, financial freedom and helps her feel more in control of her life when it seems to be tumbling out of control. When I look at the example pictures above, #2 seems to have the soft features that I pictured Chloe to have, but there is something more daring, captivating and confident about #1. I can imagine Madame Blanche seeing that photo and being instantly inspired.
I am excited to read your new work!
I really love #2 as well. :) I feel that it shows more of a shy, modest quality in her eyes. Again, I think of Chloe. She never seemed to accept that she was as beautiful as everyone insisted she was.

possibly somewhat naive.
