Diane I agree with you all the way. Children are not children anymore. They are so over come with homework they don't know what fun is. Like you I don't remember having all the homework children have now. I blame the parents for not fighting this homework policy. Let children be children they will learn while they are in school like we did. My grandson who is in kindergarden has homework. What is a child of 5 doing with homework. I remember playing with other children at that age and having fun.

Matt Lehman Wow, sweeping generalizations much?

What's up with the ranting? My god. Is all homework bad? Is all homework unnecessary? Of course not. Homework can be preparing for the next class - reading the material, or demonstrating a grasp of that material. Both of which are vital and both are not well suited as class time activities.

If you want to make the case that the US education needs improvement, I'm on board. But then write about how it can be improved. Be critical for the purpose of presenting your alternative. Your rants and attacks are tiresome and not effective.

One new thing I have recently seen in education is the Khan Academy. Free lectures on a wide range of topics. Great for kids needing help but also great if integrated by a school into it's curriculum. The kids watch the lectures at home and class time is spent doing the "homework". It allows the teacher to be more hands on with kids. I thought it was a pretty cool concept.

Jakub Oh my. It's good that you do not live in Poland. Here homework season is all season all the way.

Diane Matt, I agree that all homework is not bad. I just feel don't over do it. Children don't need 3 and 4 hours of it.

Children in Kindergarden don't need home work every night. Yes US education does need improvement. I didn't mean I was against homework. I just don't feel children in lower grades need so much homework and everyday of the week.

Pay our teachers more for what they do yes. High school I can see haveing homework. Teachers should have more time for hands on with the kids to help the ones that don't understand how to do it.

Mark I like that idea of lectures that can be wathed at home and if give the teacher to help kids with homework in school.

Matt Lehman Hey Diane, thanks for the reply. Just to clear, I was responding to OSC's post, not yours specifically.

What is difficult about this topic is something I've seen with our kids. One of ours never has homework while we know some of her friends parents are always complaining about how much their kids are having to do. Our kid gets everything done in class and study hall. That's not the case with all of our kids.

They all budget time differently and work at different paces. What may seem reasonable for one, seems unreasonable for another. One kid is underworked. The other, overworked.

I agree that there's not much point in giving little kids regular homework.
