Writing Advice: Names in Fantasy Novels

I chat at relative length about aesthetics, culture, history, social and commercial concerns. If you're interested, please click here to see the post.

Marilize Absolutely love your advice.

The first time I got stuck picking names for my characters, I went out and bought myself a baby names book. (My mother saw that and wanted to know if there was something I wasn't telling her.) I pick names from there, sometimes changing the spelling slightly to make it more exotic if necessary, or just use very old-fashioned names that no-one uses any more but sound fantasy-esque. Works for me.
