Great blog! There has been a decline in eBook sales over the last few years. I think Amazon saw this coming. In my opinion, this can be attributed to the hipster movement and the nostalgia for a physical book. The book industry has also been paying much more attention to printing higher quality books with ever more ornate covers. Some physical books are a piece of art in more than one sense and this does not come through with a black and white (more like grey and darker grey) eBook.
It’s interesting to think there is something nostalgic about a physical book, as eBooks never really superseded physical books like CDs did vinyl. But vinyl have made a resurgence on nostalgia grounds.
It also makes me wonder if eBooks did not live up to the hype. Sure, they are more convenient. I love being able to start a new book as soon as I finish and old one. However, they are seldom cheaper than a physical book and quite often they are released on kindle months after a physical release. I would also bet the author does not pocket the extra money.
Although I personally read on a kindle, I do wish I had a physical book shelf. I do still enjoy walking through a book store and picking up random books.
I'd honestly never heard of Amazon's brick and mortar stores before, but maybe that's because I live abroad. It sounds absolutely amazing! Thanks for sharing your experiences in one, definitely makes me want to stop by one if I ever get a chance.
I'm really surprised that, after lamenting about the closed down bookstore of your youth, that you are propping up an Amazon store. They are part of the reason stores like the one from your childhood are now gone.
I'm just disappointed. Instead of pointing your fans to indie bookstores that are struggling, you are telling them to try out Amazon; a business that does not need our help.

I don't know about all this...for me the point of my local indie shops (Minneapolis is thankfully lousy with them...Moon Palace, Uncle Hugo's, Dreamhaven, etc.) is to go to a store that is NOT necessarily crafted to my taste. With everyone increasingly living in a cultural bubble, it's amazing to walk into a place where I have to encounter books and tastes that I would not have anticipated. I'll often buy books that I've never heard of, not to mention zines and local comics. There's just no comparison.
Thanks for the blog. I had not heard of the physical stores before. It'll be interesting to see what the outcome may be for readers and authors.
Great blog! I had no idea that Amazon opened a brick and Mortar store. To those people shaming you for plugging the store, they should stop and think how this might help indie stores. The tide has turned back to real books for some. This should help, no? Either way, Amazon is just riding the current wave. If the other stores can’t compete on this level then maybe they should close up shop. I am harmoniously happy using both my kindle for ebooks and for reading real books. I still love to visit indie stores and I never leave without a purchase. There is room in our lives for both old and new.

One bookstore i loved is http://lastbookstorela.com/
You can buy/sell used books. Often old books with a nice dedication on the front page. A good place where books that were loved once find new owners. Maybe its not the place to find new things to read. But its a great place to purchase a book you loved or always waned to read. I was walking around for hours there.
Also somehow i hate the idea of single-use books. I feel there should be a bigger market for used books. One where the author would benefit from the sale of the used book as well.
