You know what? I’ve been reading a lot of modern authors over the past few years, and while I love doing that (sign up for my newsletter here for updates on what I’ve been reading lately), I feel I’ve fallen way behind in my reading of classics.
Ya’ll, I love me some classics.

Personally, I don't know that I'd presume to say that there are any classics (other than the Bible, of course!) that everybody should read; each person has their own unique taste, and what I like may not be what you would, for instance. But some that I've especially liked are The Scarlet Letter (in fact, all four of Hawthorne's novels), The Brothers Karamazov and Sigrid Undset's Kristen Lavransdatter trilogy and her Master of Hestviken series. The way these authors handle Christian themes speaks to me in a serious way. I really like Ivanhoe and the works of Jane Austen (that I've read), too; and I highly recommend one that tends to be neglected today, William Dean Howells' The Rise of Silas Lapham, which is a profoundly moral novel. (I've read Moby-Dick or, The Whale all the way through, but I can see why some people don't; and though I gave it three stars, I think it's overrated by most critics.)
