The Super Bowl and the Queen of England, an unlikely pairing

I imagine many of you are getting ready to watch the Super Bowl, even non-football fans. A reminder for those utterly allergic to pigskin, the Animal Planet is running its Puppy Bowl all day long; surely no one is allergic to puppies? Back to the game, with apologies to my friends and readers who are cheering the Falcons on, I am on Team Patriots. Whatever their flaws, it is hard to argue that Tom Brady and Darth Vader are probably the best QB and coach we are likely to see in our lifetimes. Also, not being a Roger Goodell fan, I would enjoy watching him hand over the SB trophy to Brady, Kraft, and Belichick. As for the commercials, I fully expect another Budweiser Clydesdale ad to carry the day.
Historically, tomorrow will mark the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the British throne. Normally I am not much interested in events that did not occur in the MA, but I think she deserves mention for such a lengthy reign; in September, she will overtake Queen Victoria. Here is a link to an interesting story about the queen. It also lists the ten people in line for the throne after Elizabeth, and #10 stumped me, a Viscount Severn. Yes, I could easily Google him, but I figured it is just as easy to ask some of the royalists in our group; who is this guy? Thanks! http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/que...

Iset James, Viscount Severn is the son of Prince Edward, Elizabeth's youngest son. He has an older sister, Lady Louise, who is 11th, and then is Princess Anne (12th), and her children, Peter Phillips (13th), his children Savannah (14th) and Isla (15th), and Zara Tindall (16th) and her child Mia (17th). And that accounts for all of the Queen's direct descendants.

Over here we call American football 'the less brutal version of rugby' or 'not football because you don't kick the ball with your foot'. ;)

Sharon Thanks, Iset. I was sure some of my readers would know!
"less brutal version of rugby." I like that.

Gretchen I thought Princess Anne gave up her spot in line to the throne along with any inheritance rights her children might have. Or did she just elect not to have any titles bestowed on her children?

message 4: by Iset (new)

Iset She just elected not to have any titles bestowed on Peter and Zara. All three have inheritance rights as well as a place in the succession.

Sharon Interesting. I had not known that. I wonder how her children feel about that? Do we know?

Iset Zara has stated that she feels 'glad' and 'lucky' and that she's happy living on the fringes of the royal family. Both she and Peter have said that they enjoy not having titles and that it has helped them in living normal, ordinary lives.

Sharon Good for them. They sound very well-adjusted! For all the advantages and benefits and perks of the royal life, it is still living in fish bowl. I'd hate that.
