Wow treasure trove of new writers, at least for me. Lovely blog, as I read this I was hoping to see Larry Brown on this list. Have you by any chance read any of his books. He is often described as modern Faulkner.

Like you, I love to find new writers."I'd be happy to :) Larry Brown writes in a very distinct southern style, very hard hitting, very southern Gothic . He was from and almost all his books are set around Mississippi. His style is very much like Cormac McCarthy, only without the human violence McCarthy delved into, it's more about people, his books explored the hysteria of being alive. In fact, early in his career Brown met one of his fans and predicted McCarthy's rise. He told him to watch out for him, Cormac will be big one day. From Larry Brown's books, I would recommend Dirty Work, Fay, Father and Son, and Joe. If you have seen the movie Joe starring Nicolas Cage, that's based on this novel. Brown was among other things a fireman, too. Tragically he died in 2004, before he could get the recognition he so deserved.
Incidentally, I am rereading A Storm of Swords and I noticed that Sam Tarly's little brother, his father's heir, is named Dickon, reminded me of your Dickon. When I read that I thought, that's it, that's all the confirmation I need of Sunne in Splendour's contribution to Martin's world. Maybe I am being silly but GRRM is known to put in Easter eggs, like one of the rivers in Westeros is called Fever after his vampire novel Fever Dream. What I liked about this new blog is the surfeit of historical writers. Obviously I am a fan of historical fiction albeit well written ones. You have set the bar too high and rightfully so.
Anyways so thrilled to introduce one of my favorite authors to another. I hope you'll enjoy Larry Brown.

I am not likely to have any time for pleasure reading until I finish my current book, but I am adding him to my To Be Read list. Still dubious about any link between Game of Thrones and Sunne, though. :-) Dickon was the common nickname for Richard in the MA, so I don't find it unusual that it appears in one of his books. Names are always tricky for historical novelists. It takes a bit of research to be sure a name was known in a particular period and not all writers bother about that.

Of course, I hope your new book is coming along nicely. All the best. Yes, I suppose you are right, but I love Sunne in Splendour so much that I can't help seeing comparisons. You are right about some writers not doing due diligence. Research can be tedious and people in general lose interest rather quickly. That reminds me, it's not the same thing that had happened with you, it's only eighteen pages but a letter I was composing, I think I messed it up and the file got corrupted, it won't open. Can't help but think of how you lost an early draft of Sunne and had to rewrite it from scratch. Whenever I lose words, I think of that. Gives me heart and courage :) Thank you for rewriting Sunne.
And once again, I love all the new writers I discovered on this blog. And the blog idea is pretty cool in itself. My favorite opening line would be from Fools Die by Mario Puzo, it goes like this :
“Listen to me. I will tell you the truth about a man’s life. I will tell you the truth about his love for women. That he never hates them. Already you think I’m on the wrong track. Stay with me. Really—I’m a master of magic.
then this line :
“But don’t run away. This is not a love story.
In fact, the whole opening is something else.
I am listening to Warpaint, try them to be in the background when you are editing/rewriting. Can't believe I just told one of my favorite authors about one of my favorite bands :)
