Do you have a Writing Playlist?

I find working without music impossible. Anyone else? It doesn't matter what I'm doing; writing, cleaning, editing, I must have background noise. But just not the screaming "Moooom!" kind of noise. That doesn't work for me at all.

It occured to me today, just how much I rely on music. It's like the background noise, the mood it creates, isolates me in this little creative cocoon. Without it, I'm wandering off to Twitter, Facebook, Youtube...not good.

What is it about music? If I'm having "one of those days", I can put on a certain song and pull myself from the doldrums. Can't seem to write anything? Well, just crank up the radio. The lyrics affect me just as much as the beat. Perhaps that's what it is. Music tells a story just as fiction does.

I find certain genres are more inspirational at different times. If I'm working on a love scene...this is going sound awful...but music like Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman, or...Aerosmith inspires some kickass lovin. Seriously. The pool table scene in Dirty Truths was written to Nickelback's Dark Horse album. In Once Bitten, it was Aerosmith all the way..hours and hours of Aerosmith. My kids threatened to smother me in my sleep if I ever played it again. How can anyone not enjoy Steven Tyler?

Fancy, by Reba McIntyre actually inspired an entire novel...which shall sit in the shadows gathering cobwebs until I figure out what to do with its awfulness. Because of You (Kelly Clarkson and Reba) got me through some really tough scenes in I Do.

I listen to nearly every genre of music, except anything that screams lyrics I can't understand or that raps. I can't work with that stuff. Lately, I've been working to a lot of 80's and 90's tunes. They just wake my brain up like nothing else. Oh, and Adam Lambert. He makes me smile.

I'm curious about the rest of you. What's your writing playlist?

Nikki Broadwell I can't write if there is background noise--too distracting! When I did my silk-painting I listened to music all the time but for some reason even the slightest voice takes me away from the page! I do agree that music brings me out of doldrums...Eagles, Led Zepplin, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Bob Dylan all put me into a better mood but I have to turn it off once I start to write--I wonder if it's an age thing? But even when I was in school I couldn't concentrate if music was playing in the background...?

Renee I think that I got used to 'thinking' with a lot of noise. I grew up in a house where noise was constant. There was always background noise when I read, when I did homework, even when I slept. That plays a big part I think. Now, I can't think without it. The noise kind of blocks out the distractions for me. In a silent room, I stare into space more than I actually work.

Nikki Broadwell my upbringing was in silence--if there was noise it was disturbing noise (arguing, etc...) and I spent a lot of time alone since my brother is 7 years older...I just posted a new blog--would love to get your input...

Renee Sure. I'll swing around there later.

Renee I just checked out the recent post and skimmed through the others. I love including your WIP in the posts, and linking it to your 'travels'.

BTW, ticks? EEK! We're dealing with fleas and that's enough for me. Five or six ticks on me would have caused a seizure or something.

Nikki Broadwell I was pretty freaked out--my husband was becoming annoyed but I couldn't help it! of course, he was itching all over too and I found one crawling on his back...(having jumped from me, I'm sure) Haven't seen one since, thank god!
thanks for feedback on my post...it's always nerve wracking trying out new things...

Rita Webb Talking about music--I never knew how much music mattered to me until one day I found myself struggling to write. I had been moving along at a great pace for the last hour or two, but then I realized that my station on Pandora had stopped. Turning it back on, I got right back to writing, and this time, the words and ideas poured out and into the computer without a problem.

Renee I think it sets your mind to the right "place", don't you think?

Yup. It depends on the scene - fast paced, bloody, quite, spooky...
Dio, classical, Jean Michel Jarre, Iron Maiden, Led zep, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Ozzy, Rainbow, Whitsnake...panpipes
:) Whatever gets me in the mood, baby!
No, not Barry White.

Yeah, I know I'm a bit of a slapper when it comes to music. I'll go with anything :)
