Ok, we’ve got new people and I can never remember how that avatar process goes…
…once you’ve already enrolled here. Can someone explain the process for getting your own avatar for people who’ve already signed onto this site?
And an ongoing welcome to all our new people!
So glad to have you aboard!
Snow last night, freezing rain this morning, rain this afternoon, and snow this evening.
We’re going out to the gym, and we’re running out of taquitos, our currently chosen lunch. So a stop at Safeway on the way back.
It was my turn to take out the garbage this morning, and the familiarity with moving on the ice was useful, right where the sidewalk goes down to the street in 4 icy slanting steps. I used the big rolling can for stability, but when it suddenly overbalanced and pitched forward, I had a momentary fear I was going arse over teakettle with the monster rolling bin, on the ice: I applied reverse shift of balance, found a center of gravity and got it righted, to roll tamely down. I’m real glad I opted to wear the snow boots for that job: from LL Bean, with real good tread.
OTOH, writing’s going again, and I’m feeling good.
Jane’s located her Christmas gift from me and her sis, the Pukisha, winging its way from Korea, and Pukisha should be here next week.
I also committed coat: I’ve been wearing a scruffy old one that the lining is coming out of, where it isn’t positively worn through in patches, and I finally bit the bullet and ordered a nice-looking winter jacket, which, if it doesn’t fit, I can send back. It should be here Tuesday.

OK—my friends who haven’t yet registered, do— because…
…I am so tired every morning of booting off a raft of spammers who come in with tags like you.buy.great.shoes and such, and it would so boost my spirits to have some more legitimate people amid the morning ‘new registrants’ e-mails. I promise you, we hate spam, we don’t spam, we don’t sell your addy to anybody, and we’re pretty nice folk. You can also add us to your feed, if you like.

Starting the new book…
This will finish this Foreigner arc. Or start another. Maybe both.
One of these days I’m going to do a different thing, but right now, this arc has been so long, covering the last year since their return—I just have to do this one.
Strange things flit through my mind, after going through the genealogy thing—it’d be interesting to do Clan of the Cave Bear MY way, vignettes of certain ancestors…
The trouble is, there are so many, once the Visigoths get going…
Ah, well, that one will likely never get done.
I did leave Ari in a bit of a quandary.
I have quite a few stories I could pick up.

Ahem! I have an announcement.
Peacemaker is finished!
It’s taken me twice as long as a normal book, though it isn’t any extraordinary length. Sometimes books behave like that. But I am now satisfied.
Atevi gun laws…
Somebody on Facebook asked, and without going into current politics (puh-leeze, guys, not here!) here’s my answer.
The question was: what do atevi think about gun control?
It’s illegal for humans to have one; Bren is always very careful with concealed-carry, and nobody fusses about Tabini’s, either. Repeating-fire type weapons and certain kinds of ammunition are reserved for the Assassins’ Guild. Rifles are fairly common–the meat supply relies only on wild game in season: ethics forbid ‘kept’ animals, and while the Hunters’ Guild supplies markets, private hunting is common. Pistols are generally permitted on a clan’s own property, but should not be taken outside it.
The Mospheirans also hunt, which takes a license, as does the possession of firearms. They do not permit weapons to be carried or used except on certain reserves, except for law enforcement. They were officially disarmed under the terms of the Treaty of the Landing, and the provision remains a matter of argument. [Some say they need to arm to defend the island; others say that arming would make it more likely they would have to defend the island---and they're vastly outnumbered.] Hunting rifles are quite common; pistols are reserved for law enforcement.
Among the ship-folk, possession of weapons that might damage equipment or breach the walls is strictly controlled. Only the battle-armored security, which has weapons-control, targeting, and target-discrimination built into the armor, is permitted projectile weapons. The wearer may control the guns, and has the option to equip them and plug them in, but there is no trigger: the user establishes certain rules of engagement, such as fire-on-movement; fire-on-id; fire-on-fire; type of fire; and whether the background may be fragile or populated with non-combatants.
