“When I was kid, my father said

Hell was a great feast.

He said the people at the table

had these long arms with no elbows,

and they were trying to feed themselves

and they were starving.

He said Heaven was a great feast, too.

He said the people at the table

had these long arms with no elbows,

and they were feeding each other

and they were full.

I think this was supposed to be

a story about selfishness or about

how Hell is self-inflicted, but I think

it’s a story of short-sightedness. I think

it’s about how circumstances do not define us,

but we’ve got to look past our elbowless arms,

or we’re going to keep starving

our way through this.”

“I used up my brave when I was young–

confessed my feelings to boys who

opened their mouths and laughed

their paper hearts in

and out of existence.

I could call this body of mine

magic, but

really, it’s all

talk.

Legend.

Old wives tale.

You know, they say the full moon

brings out the wilderness

in everybody.

Maybe they

were just looking

for somebody to howl to.”

Do I have to experience love before I can write about it?

Hell no. I’ve been writing about love my whole damn life.

hey so i have a question and i really need advice/support, im going to be 16 and all my friends wear tampons, but i just cant seem to even hold one without feeling like im going to throw up, is that normal? Ive touched myself before and have no problem wit

Hey babe!! Wanna know a secret? I used to straight up CRY every time I tried to put in a tampon (which was almost never). When I was your age, tampons scared me so bad they could reduce me to a blubbering mess in the bathroom stall. You’re not weird. Tampons are weird. I use them now, but I was probably well into my 20s before I felt comfortable with them.

A couple tips in case you ever do ~need to use one:
1. Start with regulars, not super/super+. Even if you have a really heavy period. If you’re not comfortable with the idea of tampons, you’re gonna be extra not comfortable with a BIG tampon.
2. It takes a little while to get the angle and everything exactly right. If you’re using one with a plastic applicator, keep in mind that depending on your personal body and the ~length of your vaginal canal, you might not be ABLE to extend the plunger (?? there’s gotta be another word for that) all the way. When you feel significant resistance, /stop/. As long as the tampon is at least half way out of the applicator, you don’t have to worry about pulling it out when you pull the applicator out.
3. once the applicator’s out, go ahead and use your finger to shift the tampon into a more comfortable spot
4. If the tampon isn’t fully saturated before you try to pull it out, then getting it out is going to hurt/chafe and also lowkey feel like you’re fighting some kind of vacuum seal (you’re not, of course, but there’s so much RESISTANCE)
This is another reason to start with regular tampons–you don’t want it to be dry when you take it out.

Listen, I don’t know ANYONE who wasn’t totally FREAKED OUT when they first started using tampons. Some people take to it faster than others (I know plenty of adults who hate them even now), but nobody was like “WOW THIS IS EASY” the first time they used one. Deep breaths, don’t panic, and use a pad if you’re not ready to deal with them yet.

Wrong Side of a Fistfight is a book about the kind of softness that doesn’t come easy: the hard-won kindness, the impossible self-acceptance. It’s a book about healing from the things you thought you would never heal from, and coming out the other side whole–if not a little bruised.

“In these pages, we see the rough and tumble sweetness of heartbreak that can only be solved with gin. There is love and there is violence and molten despair … Feast. It will fill you.”

Due to some unforseen and unfortunate circumstances, we’re forced to cancel the El Paso and New Mexico shows. I’m sorry for the late notice. The good news is, I’ll be headed through ABQ on my way back to Texas at the end of the tour and the ABQ slam scene has assured me that we’ll be able to schedule a gig or two for then.
