Maybe it’s just me, but I really believe that the ‘breathtaking’ part of ‘breathtakingly beautiful’ never has anything to do with looks.

You don’t suck the air out of a room by being pretty.

No–I think it has something to do with how they carry themselves. It’s that little glimpse of who they are. Maybe it’s because they seem so soft and gentle, or so unflinching and confident. Whatever it is, it’s unspoken: something in the line of their shoulders and the look in their eye.

It just knocks the wind out of you.

i am almost positive you wrote a poem with a set of lines that went something like "not a goddess anymore / but she still looks like religion in high heels". i had it bookmarked but lost it. if it's your poem, can you please direct me to it? thank you k

hi! I did write a poem with that line, but only a short quote from it (”she pins you to hotel doors, not a goddess anymore, but she still looks like religion in high heels. She kisses you godless. Whispers, “we dress like princesses to go out and kill kings.”) is available online. The full text of the poem can be found, exclusively, in my book Wrong Side of a Fistfight

“God knows there are enough hacks

Writing about the apocalypse.

That’s not the point.

This isn’t a story about nuclear winter,

It’s about the way your mouth lit me up

Like a flash bomb

How I still can’t hear for the ringing in my ears.

This is how we’ve been furnishing our apartment

The way you dig out a bomb shelter—

Because sometimes love is an ugly thing

And sometimes you’re fighting for scraps

At what used to be the kitchen table.

But you keep going.

Because the world is red and bruised, outside

And there’s no way to go on surviving

If you aren’t holding someone’s hand.

.

Sometimes you’re the run-on sentence and you just have to keep running.

.

Maybe there’s a sunset and maybe I don’t want to see it.

Maybe this is the two of us

Shoved into a car your shoulders are too broad for,

Chasing down the sun across the curve of the earth.

Maybe this is how we forgot about the ocean

How we found ourselves on the warped glass

Of an unfriendly shoreline

With the moon on our backs

And the sun, a legend to tell our children at night.

This is not the kind of love story

They write about in children’s books.

We have always been something bigger

Darker and scarier.

You said you’d follow me to the end of the world,

And I spent my whole life reading Isaac Asimov.”

If you had to guess (or if you know), how many poems have you written/posted/published/whatever?

Oh gosh, um–I mean this is 100% a guess but?? 300?? Both of my books have had close to 50 and then I post plenty more online that never get put in my books so??? Yeah 200-300?

HEY GUYS, so here’s a cool thing: I recorded a spoken word album a few months ago (click here).

The album is called Keeping Warm and it’s a collection of poems taken from both of my books. All of the tracks were recorded in a REAL SOUND BOOTH which means that they’re PROFESSIONAL QUALITY SOUND [pretty cool, right?]

The album is ‘pay what you can’ with a five dollar minimum, and you get 15 poems recorded by yours truly.

It would mean a lot to me if you guys could check it out! I put a lot of love into this little word-baby
