Alexander Engel-Hodgkinson's Blog: Way to Stay "In the Know"

January 10, 2024

Goodbye, 2023!

Hello, 2024. Last year was so busy, I forgot to update my blog here (LOL).

I fell behind on some projects. Work has been taking a lot out of me. I have, however, finally completed and published Death Under Candyland's Eye, though! It's now on Amazon in Kindle and paperback forms!

BRITTLE FIST has been pushed back to 2024. I'll be working on several projects throughout the year and will be keeping more regular updates here.

Stay tuned.

December '22 Update/NEW BOOK!

Hi, everyone! It's been a while (since summer). I've been working a lot, and writing a lot, and also drawing quite a bit. It's been a busy, hectic year for me.

Just wanted to tell you all the gameplan for 2023: I'm currently in the process of having Death Under Candyland's Eye proofread and edited. Expect its summertime release! Before that, I've also got BRITTLE FIST, a cyberpunk nightmare novella, due out in the coming March! After that, I'll be focusing primarily on Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 4: Cemetery Rumble, Part II, as well as Another Cobalt Christmas, a sequel to Cobalt Christmas: A Cobalt Rogue Story from 2018.

In other news, I've just released The Laughter in the Woods, the third instalment in what I'm referring to as The Coldwater Tapes, a series of psychological and technological horror novellas and novels about a grisly and disturbing mystery that consumes the entirety of Coldwater, Ontario and its surrounding areas. Cults, home invasions, homemade videotapes, supernatural inflictions, technological anxiety, and other things descend upon the good people of Severn Township. Somehow, it's all connected...

Fans of analog horror and late nineties/early 2000's horror will find something to enjoy in these. FOR MATURE READERS ONLY.

If you're interested in reading The Coldwater Tapes, check out:

BODYCAM (1997)
Bodycam by Alexander Engel-Hodgkinson

Soon he begins to feel strange, like someone's watching him, invading his mind and his home. When he receives another mysterious tape in the mail, he knows the same assailant isn't finished with his family, or him. Fearing for his young daughter's safety, he prepares to kill the assailant, but the assailant's means of entering the house may be more complicated than anyone could imagine...

SHE WATCHES ME BURY HER (2000)
She Watches Me Bury Her by Alexander Engel-Hodgkinson
One fateful Friday in October of the year 2000, at 6:52 PM, Cameron Morgan will kill his wife and bury the remains in the backyard.

He's been doing it every night, for years. The problem isn't necessarily that Cameron keeps killing his wife.

The problem is that his wife keeps coming back.

Things are different this time. Over the course of a single weekend, Cameron and their three children are about to witness just how dangerous mommy dearest can be--and mommy will test the limits of how far a desperate father will go...

THE LAUGHTER IN THE WOODS (2000)
The Laughter in the Woods by Alexander Engel-Hodgkinson
December of the year 2000. The Carmichael Family Reunion is something everyone looks forward to every year, hosted by Grandma at her wonderful house in the woody outskirts of Coldwater, Ontario.

But this time, no one will be going home, because something is out there, lurking in the shadows cast by the sunset... watching from the darkness of the night... and slowly, it approaches. The Carmichaels don't know what it is or where it came from. All they know is that it wants to get inside.

Summer of '22 Update

My written updates are scarce these days, but I've much to tell between installments.

Sadly, I didn't quite make my publication goals of four books last year. I did, however, publish Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5 (FINALLY!) and Bodycam was also released the same year. I finished the reading draft of Death Under Candyland's Eye, which is completed at 844 pages (and 143,775 words, which seems normal for a longer novel, but I made the mistake of writing this in a pocket book template) and being proofread and then put through a final editing phase to tighten it up a bit, trim it down to 820 pages (maximum).

As I await the proofreading of Candyland's Eye so that I can perform the final edits, I'm currently working on BRITTLE FIST, Laughter in the Woods, and a few other things in between. The goal for now is to just publish FIST and Woods this year, since work has been extremely busy and a bit taxing on my at-home work ethic. Next year, who knows?

Stay tuned...

Publication Goals for 2021

Hi, all. I know I'm always setting goals and then pushing back release dates for works I thought would be finished by then, but still, I don't think there's any harm in setting goals anyway!

I recently just finished Bodycam's first draft, and that'll be about a hundred or so pages. I'll be publishing that in a couple weeks!

I'm 500 pages into another story, Death Under Candyland's Eye, for which I'm not doing the cover art this time. Yes, this time, I've commissioned Ariel Zucker-Brull to illustrate a cover for me, because I've admired his style for years now. Death Under Candyland's Eye turned out to be a lot longer than I was expecting it to be, but it's a wild ride in its own right, and I'm well into the third act. I'm having fun writing it. Expect that in a few weeks after Bodycam's release.

Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5 is still coming. I've got over 450 pages' worth of material, and despite some hard-working moderators here on Goodreads telling me they can't set it as a primary work within its respective series, it is indeed a primary work, though I will be saving a large chunk of material planned for its ending for the beginning of Vol. 4 just in case people miss it somehow. It kind of drives my OCD up the wall, but I'll live.

Also, Laughter in the Woods, a horror story that has been in limbo for almost as long as Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5, will hopefully be written and done in October. It's not supposed to be very long, but I always seem to make things longer than originally intended, and then there's the fact that I'll be super productive for two weeks, only to not do anything for an entire month. Hopefully this year sees a change in that. Four publications in one year! Wooo. I wonder if it can be done!

Merry Christmas Despite the Hard Year

Hello, all! Damn, I just realized how behind I've been on updating the blog on this page. Since Jumping for Charlotte I've been hard at work on several things at once, three of which are Cobalt Rogue-related stories set in various parts of Damian Warkowski's life, including Vol. 3.5 of the Final Apocalypse Saga. I'm also working on a neo-noir action thriller called Death Under Candyland's Eye, which is much shorter than most of my publications so far. It should be finished either this month or later January, with a set publication for February.

Anyways, this has been a tough year for us all. I'm glad we've pulled through, and I hope next year is a major improvement over this one, because this one absolutely, positively SUCKED . Merry Christmas to you all.

Stay tuned...

APRIL UPDATE!

Hard-working, hardly working, and everything in between. It's been quite the month for me. Not all good. Not all bad, either. Still got a ways to go in Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5, but I've been making a lot of progress lately. Hope I can keep it up!

Anyway, still aiming for three releases this year. Let's do this!

MARCH UPDATE!

Still hard at work on Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5 while I attempt to maintain a stable working situation. Not an easy thing to do these days, but I'm sure I'll manage somehow.

I know I keep pushing back the release dates of all my 2019 projects, but hey, it's better to have delayed projects that are fully realized instead of rushed projects that are only half-baked. Apologies for the delays all the same, but we'll get there! Vol. 3.5 is probably going to be the lengthiest volume in the series so far, by at least a hundred pages. There's a lot of ground to cover! I'm excited to release it, but first I have to finish it! :)

Stay tuned...

FEBRUARY UPDATE!

I've recently started a part-time job which should keep me afloat for a while until I figure something out in the full-time range. During which time, I've been writing, writing, writing (and watching seven episodes of Lucifer--fun show). Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5 is gonna be quite a bit longer than I'd originally anticipated, but it's coming along really nicely. It is the reason I have pushed back Jumping for Charlotte's release by three months. I can only write so much at a time, lol.

In other news, I will be continuing work on reformatting I Keep My True Love in the Basement/REMIX. For some reason, there's something hidden in the format for the current document that throws the margins all out of whack, and it looks hideous on print. Expect it on Valentine's Day (because I am a sick fuck like that, lol).

Meanwhile, She Watches Me Bury Her will not be getting a solo Amazon release in paperback format. Unlike Lulu (where it IS available in paperback), Amazon won't print anything that clocks in at less than 100 pages, and Bury Her is 82. BUT, you can still get a paperback copy on Lulu and an e-book copy on Amazon Kindle. It will be included in an upcoming print anthology I'm putting together that will include re-edited versions of my stories from way back in my DeviantART days, along with some new stories I'll be writing throughout this year and The Laughter in the Woods, which will be coming out in October around Halloween (and will also be getting a solo paperback/e-book release).

Anyway, that's all for now. Stay tuned!

JANUARY UPDATE!

Still hard at work on Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5, and I'm also busying myself with job hunting and Jumping for Charlotte due Valentine's Day this year. Not much else to write about for now, just that I've working hard but hardly working (until I nail an interview, of course...)

DECEMBER UPDATE (and delays)!!

Good news and bad news, everyone! The good news is, Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3 is finally out and about on platforms that will be listed below.

The bad news is, Cobalt Rogue, Vol. 3.5 won't be making its projected Dec. 20th release date. I want it to be the best damn thing I've written in this series so far, and I can't do that if I rush it to publication on the 20th. Perhaps early next year; but it's unlikely that it'll make a December 2018 release. Sorry.
