The Reluctant Debutante

Wendy May Andrews has a new release perfect for curling up with over the weekend! The Reluctant Debutante is a 100,000 word Sweet, Regency Romance.

Tagline: Are the possibilities worth the price?

Blurb:

The Duke of Wychwood seeks retribution from the Earl of Pickering. When he finds out the earl has a beautiful young niece, the duke thinks to involve her in his feud, but is shocked to discover he is attracted to her.

The orphaned niece of the earl, Lady Victoria, serves as governess to four of his children and is made to feel like an interloper in her own home. A chance encounter with the duke affords her the opportunity to enter Society, but to take it means risking what little security she has.

Revenge and love don’t sit well together, to have a future can they learn to give up the past?

Excerpt:

“Who is that ravishing creature entering the devil’s lair?” Bryghton Alcott, the fifth Duke of Wychwood, asked his friend, his gaze arrested by the slender figure climbing the stairs to a midsize townhouse as they rode past.

Turning in his saddle to gape at the young woman, Lord Lynster grinned, thrilled to know something his powerful friend did not. He turned back to face the duke. “You don’t know who that is?”

“Would I be asking you if I knew?” Bryghton said, with a wry twist to his lips.

His left eyebrow tilted at a somewhat haughty angle, the young baron finally answered with a touch of dramatic flair, “That, my good fellow, is the devil’s niece, Lady Victoria Bartley.”

“Really?” the duke asked, incredulity now echoed in his voice. “How did I not know that the devil had a niece? Surely this information could be used to my advantage.”

“I have no idea how you could have researched your enemy so thoroughly and yet not know that he is living in his niece’s house. I never thought to mention it since it seemed to be a matter of common knowledge. Of course, the lady was a child when the devil inherited her father’s title, so I suppose you took no note of her existence.”

Alcott’s face held a far-away expression for a few moments before his gaze sharpened on his friend’s face. “You said the devil is living in her house. What do you mean?”

“The earl only inherited what was entailed. The previous earl doted on his only child and left everything that was unentailed to his daughter, including the London townhouse we just rode past. The new earl, the young lady’s uncle, is her guardian until she gains control of her own fortune. As such, he and his family live with Lady Victoria when they are in Town. She lives with them in her former home when they

are in the country.” Alfred, Lord Lynster, “Fred” to his friends, looked at Bryghton with a touch of anxiety, unsure of how his friend would use this information to his advantage. “The young woman faced much tragedy at a tender age, losing both her parents in that terrible carriage accident that made the devil the earl.”

“Yes, and no doubt she could use a friend, being stuck in the same house with Bartley and his family as she is,” concurred the duke, his handsome face darkened by a sinister cast.

Welcome to Faith-Filled Friday! Please feel free to share a favorite Bible verse, inspirational poem, or a few sentences from one of your favorite Christian books. Authors may post an excerpt from any of their family friendly books. Here is a favorite poem of mine…

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Success is failure turned inside out—

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far,

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit—

It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

All That Glitters

This sweet romance is the perfect book to snuggle up with under the covers! Keep reading to learn more about Ines Bautista-Yao’s latest release.

[image error]Under the Stars

A Scene from All That Glitters

By Ines Bautista-Yao

All That Glitters is a story about college students Billie Santiago and Carlos Angeles, two friends who have never really gone beyond hanging out and poking fun at each other. Then one day, blindingly handsome, public relations professional Iñigo Antonio walks into Billie’s life and ropes her into his glamorous world. The scene below takes place after a spa-themed PR event doesn’t go very well for Billie, so Carlos insists on cheering her up.

***

Billie wasn’t prepared to arrive back at school. She spent most of her life there, so it wasn’t the first place she’d expected Carlos to take her. She was hoping for some hole-in-the-wall restaurant or maybe even a rundown diner with greasy fries and burgers, but school?

“I know that look. Stop it and hold all judgments till after I show you where we’re going.” Carlos glanced her way.

“What?” Billie spluttered. “I didn’t say a word!”

“You forget, I am well-versed in Belinda Santiago’s Facial Expressions 101.”

“And I am just as well-versed in the tricks up Carlos Angeles’s sleeve. So don’t blame me while I try to figure out what this surprise is.”

“You can’t. I haven’t told you about it. I just got the go-ahead yesterday. I was saving it for a date with Patricia, but…well…” His voice trailed off, and he gave her an odd look.

She felt her mood darken at his words. “Are you seriously still seeing her?”

“Does it matter? I’m here with you, taking you to a place I was planning to take an actual date… so I was expecting less snark and more gratitude.” Carlos cut his eyes at her. “I should have just taken you to a fast food joint.”

“That’s what I was expecting.” But Billie wasn’t upset anymore. In fact, she was feeling a bit lightheaded.

“Remind me not to waste anything special on you next time,” he teased.

“Does that mean you’re still taking me to see this totally awesome place?” She poked his arm repeatedly, a grin on her face.

He shook her off. “Quit it.”

“You still are, right? Right?” Billie put her cheek against his shoulder and inhaled his scent of laundry detergent and something else she associated only with him, most likely a mix of his soap and deodorant. Whatever it was, it was comforting.

Instead of shrugging her away, which he usually did, Carlos leaned his head on hers for a split second before straightening up again. “Yeah, if not, I’d just be wasting my gas and you know how pricey it is nowadays. My dad’s going to take away my driving privileges.”

Billie snorted. “You truly know how to make a girl feel special, Carlos.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself.” Carlos pulled up in front of the science and technology building. “Let’s go, Belinda Santiago. Just don’t fall in love with me after this.”

“Mighty cocky, aren’t we?” Billie jumped down from the car, trying to ignore the flutter of excitement in her chest. She was probably just tired or hung over from immersing her brain in all things Iñigo. This was, after all, just Carlos pretending to flirt with her. Nothing more. He was likely doing a look-see of the place before taking the Pixie Princess there. So, she might as well enjoy herself. She’d had a rough afternoon. You didn’t get money tossed in your face and called a pimple on society’s butt every day.

Carlos fished a key from his pocket and greeted the guard who gave him a wave of recognition. Billie elbowed him in the side. “Did you secretly shift courses or something? Why are you BFFs with the guard?”

“I hardly call a wave BFFship.” Carlos led the way straight through the dimly lit lobby, up a few flights of stairs, and to a door with the sign “THIS WAY TO THE STARS” stenciled on it.

Billie’s breath caught. “Are you seriously taking me to the observatory? How did you get the key to the observatory?”

Carlos took her hand and squeezed it. “Shush. I’ll explain later.”

Billie couldn’t contain her excitement. The tiny butterflies that sprouted in her tummy flew up to her chest where they took turns flapping, fluttering, and flipping. Every student knew about the university observatory. When the library was renovated, it was too. Instead of a simple deck with a couple of telescopes, there was now a gray dome that rested atop the astronomy building, straight out of a sci-fi film. Only science majors were allowed inside and Billie didn’t think she’d ever get the chance to enter. She didn’t let go of Carlos’s hand as he unlocked the door and they stepped inside a dark room.

Carlos flipped on a switch and the large space was bathed in bright, white light. Ignoring all the other scientific equipment and files scattered about, Billie let go of his hand and ran to the center, right underneath the dome. Looking up at what seemed like an inverted crater—well, a smooth, human-engineered one that opened up when you pressed a button—Billie felt her heart rate speed up. There was a long, sleek telescope resting on a tall stand next to her, its lens slightly tilted upwards, but the rest of the equipment was pushed to the sides, giving Billie and Carlos space to move around and not worry about accidentally hitting anything.

“This is wonderful,” she whispered when Carlos stood next to her.

“It is, isn’t it?” He smiled. “But it gets so much better.” He moved to the wall nearest the telescope and touched something. A low hum broke the silence around them, and Billie watched in awe as the evening sky began to slowly reveal itself when a panel slid to the side. She held her breath. The velvety blackness spattered with tiny pinpricks of light winked down at them through the inverted dome.

Carlos pulled her down by the hand and they sat on the wooden floor. Billie stretched herself out and lay back on her elbows, her eyes enthralled by the night sky. “Makes me wonder if I could still shift courses.”

“You just have to know a guy.” Carlos shrugged. “Steven owed me a favor.”

“Why didn’t I think of Steven?” He was one of Carlos’s closest friends and the president of the Astrology club. “If I had known they had privileges like this, I would

have signed up years ago. I thought they just went to parks and mountains to look up at the stars.”

Carlos chuckled. “What’s wrong with climbing a mountain? It’s definitely on my bucket list.”

Billie grimaced. “Not mine.”

“I know.” He nudged her foot with his. “City girl.”

“Well, thank goodness for places like this in the city!” Billie stuck her tongue out at him.

Carlos just laughed.

This was the perfect time to play the five-year game, but somehow, Billie found herself thinking back instead. “Stars remind me of my grandfather. He used to live with us because he’d gotten too sick to live on his own and my mom didn’t want to leave him in the care of a nurse without a family member around.” She took a deep breath, her eyes misting over, her chest tightening. “He used to sneak me out of the house past bedtime to visit the park and gaze at the stars. He’d tell me to look for the constellations, but I could never picture them the way they looked in cartoons or books. The dippers, I could always find but everything else? I mean, like Hercules? Come on.”

“That just means you can’t switch courses.” She could hear the grin in his voice.

“Yeah, whatever. That was a long time ago. The twins weren’t even born yet.”

“Was Yaya Dolor angry when your lolo took you home after sneaking you out?”

Billie smiled at the memory. “No, she never got mad at him. I think she had a soft spot for my lolo. She would sneak me right back in bed and not tell my parents. The next morning over breakfast, he’d quiz me on the constellations and I would bring out my notebook with my list. I memorized them but still can’t seem to see what the early Greeks did, you know? Like over there, I know that’s Cassiopea—but really, how did they figure that? I mean, it’s just five stars in the shape of an E, an M, or a W depending on your orientation.”

“You just got that from a movie,” Carlos smirked.

Billie ignored him. “And over there, that’s Perseus. That line next to Cassiopea, and those bright stars that form like an inverted V, well, those are supposed to be his legs. The Greeks must have had a great imagination.”

“Or were bored to death. I could come up with stuff based on the stars. Just give me several nights up here.”

Billie rolled her eyes and turned to face him. She was surprised at how close he was. Pleasantly surprised—which surprised her even more. Maybe there was some merit to his earlier warning. The thought made her nervous.

Carlos added, “I’ve had a fascination with the stars too. But I’ve always been more intrigued by the planets. When Steven took me here once, I was able to spot Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter right away. And I knew I had to come back. When he gave me the key, for a special occasion, I wanted to bring someone special here. Someone who would appreciate it as much as I did.”

Something began to ache in Billie’s chest. What was going on? What was he saying? This was all happening too fast. This was not what their friendship was about. Or was it?

“That’s why I was going to ask Patricia.” He looked at her, waiting for her reaction, a naughty smile playing at the corners of his lips. “But you’re a lousy stand-in. You need to stoop a little more.”

Billie sat up and whacked him on the shoulder.

Carlos was on his side laughing. “Sorry, Billie girl, you’re just so easy to tease, you know that?”

“Well, after that, I’m definitely not falling in love with you!”

“Never say never.” But before Billie could retort, he said, “Come on, let’s go get something to eat. We can sit in the field and still be under the stars even if the view isn’t this spectacular.”

Billie got up, threw her arms around her friend, and squeezed tight. “Thanks for this, Carlos. I really needed it.”

His arms came up around her too. “I know. But now, you realize, you owe me.”

Billie shoved him away. “You’re impossible!”

Carlos grinned. “I know that, too.”

Dating the It Guy

Check out this new release by Krysten Lindsay Hager!

Blurb: Emme is a sophomore in high school who starts dating, Brendon Agretti, the popular senior who happens to be a senator’s son and well-known for his good looks. Emme feels out of her comfort zone in Brendon’s world and it doesn’t help that his picture perfect ex, Lauren, seems determined to get back into his life, along with every other girl who wants to be the future Mrs. Agretti. Emme is already conflicted due to the fact her last boyfriend cheated on her and her whole world is off kilter with her family issues. Life suddenly seems easier keeping Brendon away and relying on her crystals and horoscopes to guide her. Emme soon starts to realize she needs to focus less on the stars and more on her senses. Can Emme get over her insecurities and make her relationship work? Life sure is complicated when you’re dating the it guy.

[image error]Book trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HdfnUqZPKU

Short Excerpt: “By the way, did you hear Lauren got into Senator Agretti’s old school?”

“Seriously? I wonder if she applied there because Brendon did,” I said.

Margaux snorted. “Duh, of course. Seriously, she might as well just pee on him to mark her territory.”

“Margaux, shut up,” Kylie said.

“Whatever. Anyway, the important thing is if Brendon knew she was applying there,” Margaux said. “Em, do you think he knew?”

I hoped Lauren was just trying to follow Brendon, but what if they had planned this whole thing while they were dating? What if he convinced her to apply there so they could go to college together, wear matching American flag sweaters with big scarves while drinking hot chocolate, and jump into leaf piles just like a preppy clothing catalog. At least now I didn’t have to worry about them reciting poetry to one another in South Bend, but still, what if they had made plans to go to school together?

“Don’t worry about it,” Kylie said. “She was probably trying to follow him—like she always does. She’s so pathetic.”

Kylie was trying to make me feel better, but Lauren was far from pathetic. After all, she was pretty much the “Most Likely to Succeed” poster girl. While she was out overachieving and saving the world without messing up her perfect, bouncy hair, I was trying to get through each day. I tried to push away the image of Lauren and Brendon holding hands and drinking hot chocolate under a stadium blanket.

Long Excerpt: He put the magazine between us, and when I moved forward to see it, he put his arm across the back of my chair. Now lots of guys did put their arms on chair backs, even Kirk did that with Rory, and he definitely wasn’t interested in her, but I couldn’t help but hope it meant something. I got this shivery feeling, and he asked if I was cold. I shook my head. I always got a feeling before something major was about to happen, and it has nothing to do with being cold, but I didn’t know why I got the feeling. Grandma used to do the same thing and always said, “Somebody just walked across my grave.” Somehow I didn’t think Brendon would understand if I told him I needed to move my future burial plot to a less high-traffic area.

“Are we still on for the art fair?” he asked.

I had only been circling it with hearts on my calendar since he asked.

“Sure, I think I’m still free,” I said.

We finished up our work, and he walked me out to meet Kylie.

“Okay, I’ll pick you up at three tomorrow,” he said, walking off.

“Can I ask a stupid question?” Kylie asked as soon as Brendon was out of earshot. “What’s he like? Because he’s so well-known, and I can’t imagine what it’d be like to grow up with your whole life under a microscope. I mean, my mom remembers his first birthday party pictures being shown on the news. And he’s hot, but he’s not like I-know-I’m-a-hottie hot, but more like a confident, ‘Yes, I am hot. Any questions?’ I mean, he has to have noticed there aren’t any guys who look like him walking around.”

“I should tell him what you said.”

“Don’t you dare,” Kylie said.

“I get what you mean—he’s grown up with everybody knowing his dad and watching him, but he’s pretty down to earth.”

“So what’s up with you two? You guys didn’t do any work last Saturday, and now you’re going to an art fair.”

“I dunno. He just asked me to go with him.”

“Asked you to go with him as his study buddy or asked you to go with him because he’s desperately in love with you?” she asked.

I said we were just friends, but she wouldn’t let it go.

“Okay, duh, obviously I like him, but let’s be honest. He’s out of my league. He’s out of most people’s league. It’s weird because normally if I like a guy then one of two things happens—either he likes me and asks for my number…or I find out he’s not into me and I cry in my pillow and listen to man-hating music for at least three days,” I said. “But this time’s different because he’s, I dunno, not just ‘some guy.’ I mean, I’m not putting up a shrine to him in my room, and I haven’t rooted though his garbage can, but I have as much chance of going out with him as Kirk does of getting an ‘A’ in this class.”

“You listen to man-hating music?” she asked, and I narrowed my eyes at her. “Whatever. Anyway, Em, he’s asked you out once already, and you are seeing him tomorrow. Plus, he’s always staring at you.”

I said he was probably just bored in class today, but she wouldn’t let it go.

“I’m not just talking about today. When we watched the movie on Monday, he watched you instead, and whenever I see you guys, he acts like there’s no one else in the room,” she said.

I couldn’t hold back the big, stupid smile spreading across my face. “He does? For real?”

She nodded. “You know, it’s weird. Here you were all upset you didn’t have a partner at the beginning of the semester, and then you ended up with like, Mr. Perfection, as your partner.”

Praise for Dating the It Guy:

“A sweet, endearing story—you’ll fall in love with Emme just like I did!” –Kimber Leigh Wheaton, YA/NA author

“Hager’s authentic characters will resonate with readers of all ages as they are immersed in the story  – complete with teen drama and angst, but also the relationships which make it all worthwhile.” —  Leslie L. McKee, book reviewer, Edits and Reviews by Leslie

What people are saying about Krysten’s work:

From Teenage Book Recommendations in the UK: “This is a fantastically relatable and real book which I feel captures all of the insecurities and troubles which haunt the modern teenage girl. It is about a young model who has to go through tough times when she is torn between a life as a model and managing her friendships. You learn which friends she can most trust and which will create the drama typical of teenage life. Follow the life of Landry and try to see if you can find out which are her true friends before their true colours are revealed. This book is all about relationships, hopes and truth. I loved this book!”

From Books & Authors Spot: “This book is such an inspiration for those who just care about their looks and are tensed about them. This thing is looks aren’t everything. This book is related to every teen’s problem. Hager has written a very inspiring novel.”

“Krysten captures the teenage girl today. The struggles are real, the issues are something children have been dealing with since before I was a teen, and oddly-Krysten captures the readers! I was prepared for another “Mean Girls” story. This is NOT that. This is the real story of teenage girls! You watch Landry flower into a young woman who finds out trust is an invaluable item to find, and friendships are hard to seek genuine realism in. You will learn about relationships with not just friends, but peers, boys, and others. The details put into the book will draw you, and make the story so much more realistic. Krysten expresses emotions beautifully through her writing, and the story flows flawlessly…” By Candice J. Conway Simpson

“True Colors, is just a dazzling story of how middle school kids show their true colors of jealousy, drama, loss and gains of friendship. However, the way Krysten wrote her story; she wrote it with passion, creativity and honesty that this story line could be placed in anyone’s life at any age.” Review by Double Decker Books

“Krysten Lindsay Hager understands what it means to be a teen today, and she writes with an authentic voice. Landry, the main character, is funny, lively, and very real. Readers will relate to her struggles with friends and family, self-esteem and self-discovery, boys and school and life in general. It’s fun to read about Landry’s blossoming modeling career and the changes it brings.” Review by Author Diana Jenkins

Enjoy!

Tag Line:  Will they take a risk and grab a hold of their missing destiny?

Teaser Summary:
She spends Friday nights with charts and graphs. His best friend is a dog named Sebastian. All she’s ever wanted was peace and to feel she belonged. All he ever wanted was to disappear. She’s a city girl hiding in a small town. He’s back home hiding from his past. If life were perfect, they could be each other’s missing destiny.

Long Summary:

Shauna Nathan has a stalker so leaving her orderly and predictable life for a while is imperative to her safety and her family’s peace of mind. She’s established in her field of chemical engineering and resents what she considers this pause in her life while her father’s security firm finds the man that has been making her life a living hell. Given no choice but to leave town, she visits a college friend in Chandlerville hoping it is the last place the man who’s been following her will look.

Zach Mobley grew up in Bourbonville with one goal; to leave the town and the stigma of his childhood behind. He was tired of the sympathetic looks some of the town people gave him after his mother left, and the knowing looks the rest gave him when his dad took to drinking.

He moved to New York, had a successful career in finance, a beautiful wife and daughter one day and the next it was all gone. He came back to Chandlerville to come to terms with his loss and find a modicum of peace as a ranch hand- turned therapist at Murphy’s Equestrian Therapy Center. He’s learned to be content living alone until Shauna walks in his life and makes him want more.

The battle of wills begin as these two very independent-minded people fight against their attraction for one another, but when Shauna’s stalker arrives in town Zach is introduced to the more fragile side of his strong-willed client.

Will he lower his defenses enough to risk heartbreak again or will he hold onto the sense of peace he’s worked so hard to regain?
