Book Review: Olive and the Great Flood by Connie Arnold

There are a few authors that when I hear from them and they ask if I’d be willing to do a review, it’s a no brainer. Author and poet Connie Arnold is one of them.

Connie’s new release, Olive and The Great Flood, is a children’s book about Noah’s Ark.

A Note from Connie:

Also, I will be giving away two prizes randomly chosen from those commenting during the tour – a copy of my first children’s book, Animal Sound Mix-up, and a gold dove wind chime.

Olive and the Great Flood_edited

Book Description:

Olive is a gentle, friendly dove who wants to help her friends Noah, his family and the other animals with her on the ark. She tries to soothe them during the rain and has an important assignment, to discover when it’s safe to venture from the ark after the flood. Suggested age range for readers: 4-8

This was such a fun read and a fresh way of telling a classic Bible story. Olive is a dove who helps Noah and the other animals with the ark experience. She comforts them when the rains start, and then learns she’s needed for an important job once the rains stop.

This is age appropriate reading with clever rhyming and a wonderful, Biblical message. The illustrations are top-notch. Whether your child is well-versed in the Bible or curious, I recommend Olive and the Great Flood to all.

I received Olive and the Great Flood in exchange for an honest review.

Purchase Olive and the Great Flood here.

The Love Boat Bachelor is FREE on Kindle

10606051_10205457154047888_2682259527214337031_n

Have you read The Love Boat Bachelor? It’s FREE on Kindle the 14th-17th.

Romance is a joke.

After the love of Brent Teague’s life came back into his world only to marry someone else, Brent is through with women. He might be through with being a pastor, too.

Brent was so sure that God brought Mara Adkins home to him so they could marry and live happily ever after. Six months after her wedding to another man, that theory is obviously a dud. If Brent could be so wrong about that, who’s to say he’s not mistaken about God calling him to pastoral ministry?

Tired of watching Brent flounder for direction, Brent’s feisty older sister boots him out of Spartanburg and onto a cruise ship. Brent’s old college buddy manages the ship’s staff, and he’s thrilled to finagle Brent into the role of chaplain for the two-week cruise.

As the ship sets sail, Brent starts to relax. Maybe a cruise wasn’t such a bad idea after all. But there’s just one little thing no one told him. He’s not on any ordinary cruise. He’s on The Love Boat.

What’s a sworn bachelor to do on a Caribbean cruise full of romance and love? He’ll either have to jump ship or embrace the unforgettable romantic comedy headed his way.

Learn more about Brent in A Dozen Apologies, available on Kindle.

You can learn more about the authors, Brent Teague and fun about the book throughout social media and our blogs. Write Integrity is the central hub for all things Love Boat Bachelor.

One of the most fun things associated with the book is the video our creative leader, publisher Tracy Ruckman, from Write Integrity Press, created. It’s in my left sidebar this week.

It’s also here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Q&A Interview with

Jerusha Agen, author of This

Redeemer,
Book

Three in the Sisters Redeemed

Series
:

What message do you hope your readers will take away

after reading your novel?

I hope and pray that women who are in abusive relationships,

poverty, depression, or any other type of seemingly hopeless situation will

see

in this story that there is hope even in the most desperate of situations,

and

that His name is Jesus. For readers who have no experience with such

desperation, I hope that they will be convicted of the need to selflessly

love

the “unlovable” in the world and to humbly forgive the “unforgivable.” For

all

of us, there is hope!

Do you have any practical advice for writers on how to

keep their sanity in our run, run, run world?

Staying sane in our hectic culture is my daily struggle!

Some things that help me most are setting writing goals for each day and

actually quitting for the day when I reach the goal. I’ve found that I have

to

limit when I’ll allow myself to check email or go online, so that I don’t

end

up letting my sleep or work time disappear into the Internet vacuum.

As a writer, it’s also too easy to work whenever I’m home,

even on Sundays, which translates into no day off from work and eventual

burnout. I believe that rest, especially on our day set aside to worship, is

crucial to staying in the rat race for the long haul, so I’ve now made every

Sunday a no-writing, no-Internet day. I end up with a free, restful day away

from social and work pressures that allows me to recharge for the work week

ahead. The other essential for sanity is sleep!

Book Review: The Five Love Languages for Men by Gary Chapman and Randy Southern

A note from Julie: As part of our review for The Five Love Languages for Men, Flyby Promotions invited us to have husbands share their thoughts.

91fjVho7irL._SL1500_

Book Description:

Falling in love is easy. Keeping the sizzle in your marriage? That’s more like grilling the perfect steak-it takes time, attention, and some secret spices. Mastering your wife’s heart doesn’t have to be complicated, but it will take a little effort. Good intentions alone will not get the job done.

Gary Chapman gears this edition of his #1 New York Times multi-million best seller to your needs, challenges, and interests as a husband. Whatreally fills your wife’s love tank? (It may not be what you think.) How can you let her know what you’re thinking and feeling?  What can you do to make sex more meaningful and pleasurable for you both? This book offers a straightforward approach that will equip you for relational success.

Discover the secret that has already transformed millions of relationships worldwide. As you learn this simple, yet profound, concept for communicating love, you’ll be more confident and courageous in the ways that matter most. Really!

“When you express your love for your wife using her primary love language, it’s like hitting the sweet spot on a baseball bat or golf club. It just feels right-and the results are impressive.” -Gary Chapman

Includes an updated version of The 5 Love Languages® personal profile.

Tom: The Five Love Languages is the one book Julie and I most often recommend to others.  The principles are so simple and can work in any relationship, even business. With the revised 5 Love Languages for Men I learned that there are three updates that set it apart from the others—helpful illustrations, how to handle anger, and crafting apologies.

A lot of the book is familiar to me and yet it was a good refresher. It’s tempting to offer my primary love language to Julie and the book reminded me that doing that doesn’t fill her love bank. I have to speak her love language. Because her primary language is words of affirmation, that isn’t natural for me, so I appreciated the tips the chapter gave. They do the same for each love language.

The authors also go through anger and how it isn’t a bad thing if processed the correct way.  “Anger can be your friend” sounds odd, but the tools they gave to communicate through it made sense.

The apology section is a summary of the 5 Languages of Apology and is definitely worth a read. This is helpful not just for marriage, but with kids, extended family and business relationships.

There are also resources in the back, including the 5 Love Languages personal profile.

As Julie and I close in on two decades of meeting and dating, it’s easy for us to take each other for granted and let our marriage coast. The Five Love Languages for Men gives me tools, illustrations, challenges, tips and ideas to make sure I be proactive in filling her love bank by using her languages, not mine. There’s even a golf swing illustration that helped me grasp the concept.

It’s a book I hope men will be intentional in buying, reading, and using in marriage.

Your wife will thank you.

Book Review Revisited: Pulling Back the Shades

First published April 22, 2014 71M2mWySMdL._SL1500_

Christian women don’t have to choose between being sexual and spiritual.

They have legitimate longings that the Church has been afraid to

talk about, and books like Fifty Shades of Grey exploit. Whether

you are single or married, sexually dead or just looking to revive your sex

life, Pulling Back the Shades will address your desire

to be both sexual AND spiritual. With solid Biblical teaching and transparent

stories, trusted authors Dannah Gresh  and Dr. Juli Slattery, offer an unflinching

look at the most personal questions women ask. The book offers practical

advice for women to address five core longings:

to be

cherished by a manto be protected by a strong manto rescue

a manto be sexually alive to escape reality

God

designed women with these longings and has a plan to satisfy them. It’s

time for women to identify their intimate longings and God-honoring ways to fulfill

them.

I knew there would be a Christian response to the “50 Shades” phenomenon. What I didn’t realize until after I read Pulling Back the Shades is the deep need there is for a Christian response, and for every woman and clergy member to read it.

Pulling Back the Shades explains that the Fifty Shades of Grey is about in easy to understand terms. Dannah Gresh and Dr. Juli Slattery go through and inform readers what actions in the book are real, and not. What actions are Biblical, and not. They explain that Christian women ARE reading not only Fifty Shades of Gray, but erotica in general. And defending themselves. Instead of judging women who read these books, the authors explain what is driving them to.

Women, even Christian women, single and married, are lonely.

They long for romance.

And escape.

And right there ready to pounce is the true defeated one, offering what looks like a perfect solution. Instead of having an affair, women feel justified reading erotica. But the after effects, the consequences of taking the mind to those words are far reaching and devastating.

I really was shocked by the grip satan has on women through erotica. Pornography is well documented and spoken about in sermons and counselor offices. But women reading Fifty Shades of Gray and books like it, and that it is causing problems? I was naive. I had no idea how many Christian women are reading these books. How many find the situations real and long for them enough in their lives they are leaving their marriages and seeking satisfaction where they can find it, thinking what they read in the books will be as thrilling as real life.

But devastation lays in the wake.

I applaud Dannah Gresh and Dr. Juli Slattery for tackling the subject, and for Dr. Slattery reading the Shades series. She did so with her clinical background and her faith, but covered herself in prayer as she read. Beyond the clinical things she discovered that I hinted at above, she was taken aback at the spiritual mocking the 50 Shades books takes, so subtle that EL James probably didn’t even realize it as she wrote. The “hero’s” name is Christian. The word holy is misused over and over and over again. Scriptural reference is employed in direct contrast to the Bible. And I could go on.

This book needs to be in every woman’s hands. Christian or not. All clergy should have this book and be ready for the women who will be coming in seeking counsel, or for the sermons they should prepare in an effort to set women free from a stronghold they might not know is destroying them.

Pulling Back the Shades is a must read. I’m sorry that it has to be as much as the authors struggled with writing it because the topic is so graphic. But I’m so glad they did.

To purchase Pulling Back the Shades, please click here.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: To Save Her Child by Margaret Daley

91SAcYeBo5L._SL1500_

Book Description:

In Search of Her Son

When a young boy goes missing from wilderness day camp, Alaskan search and rescue worker Josiah Witherspoon is on the case. The brooding ex-marine promises to find the child and return him to his worried mother. But he doesn’t know that Ella Jackson has a secret past. One that could put them all in danger. When tensions mount, Ella needs to tell Josiah the truth—but she can’t set aside her fears enough to trust him. Ella and Josiah are ready to risk their lives to save her son, but will they risk their hearts, as well?

Alaskan Search and Rescue: Risking their lives to save the day

There’s nothing that brings suspense up a notch than when a child is missing. To Save Her Child has great suspense and a solid plot with Ella scared for her son and afraid her past has come back for them. Josiah is no longer active with the Marines but certainly has the training to help find the boy. But he has his secrets, too.

I always enjoy a book that features a hero with a military background and To Save Her Child doesn’t disappoint. This was a quick page turner like I said, with solid suspense. I definitely recommend it.

Chat with Susan:Why do you write the kind of books you do? I homeschooled and am

targets multiple subjects and levels of learning.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your

What can you tell us about your current project? I assume you mean

Plundered Christmas. In this mystery, we need to figure out why the

Banet family has hidden their heritage all these years, in addition to

learning who killed Margo’s nephew. Secrets can poison a family and damage

relationships. As the Talbotts uncover the truth about Anne Bonny/Banet, it

leads to healing for those who accept it.

Crumbs and Embers Now Available

Last year I offered monthly installments of Match Made in Heaven, a contemporary romance based in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It was my way of thanking newsletter subscribers for joining me on the journey. It was a fun novella and well received.DSCN0729

When I asked what readers wanted this year, they asked for a sequel. Earlier this week I unveiled the first installment of Crumbs and Embers, the follow-up to Match Made in Heaven.

Although Crumbs and Embers can stand alone, new subscribers receive Match Made in Heaven as my thanks for signing up, and all subscribers receive the monthly installments of Crumbs and Embers.

Wendy Bass is the Hammondsport Senior Complex director and she’s good at what she does. She’s organized and looking out for the seniors and their future. When a curve ball comes, it leaves her reeling.

Derek Spencer arrives in Hammondsport with his work cut out for him. He’s ready to make changes when he sees something familiar in Wendy’s reaction to his presence. He wants to reach out, but to do so, he’s got to share his past. And that’s something he vowed to keep hidden.

Can Wendy let go of her control and allow Derek in? Will Derek push past his skeletons to show Wendy a path to freedom?

Curious? I’d love for you to read more. To receive Crumbs and Embers, subscribe for free to my newsletter by completing the form in the left sidebar of my website. Make sure you watch for activation in your inbox and all folders.

If you’ve read the first installment, what did you think?

Crumbs and Embers is on Pinterest, as is all my writing. Check everything out here.
