Interview with Maddie Caldecott by Sherri Stewart

An Interview with Maddie Caldecott

By Sherri Stewart

The red light blinked twice from the studio wall, and the interview began. “Good morning, everyone. I’m Jenny Timmins, and today we have with us Madeleine Caldecott, weekend anchor and reporter for WJBT here in Orlando. Thank you for agreeing to join us today—”

Maddie swept stray hairs away from her forehead, wishing she had a mirror. “It’s Maddie, and you’re welcome.” She tried to smile, but it was hard to concentrate with the bright lights in her eyes. It wasn’t like this in her studio.

“Maddie, then. Tell us about yourself—where you’re from, and a bit about your work.”

She shifted in her seat, picking at a piece of fuzz on her jacket. “Well, I’m very organized. A tidy desk leads to less chaos in the world, don’t you agree?”

Ms. Timmins shifted in her seat. “Hm, I’ve never thought of that before. You may be right. How did you get into broadcasting?”

Good. Maddie would much rather talk about work than her private life. “When I was in high school in New Jersey, I was part of the video broadcasting team, and that’s where I got my calling—to expose injustice and protect the victims. I’ve been doing that ever since.” She couldn’t help but chuckle. “Uprooting evil is like keeping a tidy desk. My producer said when he needs someone to get rid of the dirt under the carpet, he knows who to call.”

The interviewer chuckled. “Can you tell us about some cases you’ve worked on?”

This she could answer. She brightened. “Right now, I’m revisiting a case I worked on years ago. The perp disappeared after his trial, and I’m trying to track him down.”

Ms. Timmins leaned forward. “That must put you in dangerous situations at times, doesn’t it?”

Maddie’s lips tightened. She’d walked right into that question. The last thing she wanted to do was talk about the threatening notes she’d received, or that time at school…

“Maddie?”

“Could I have a glass of water, please?” She straightened in her seat. Anything to buy some time. An intern hurried onto the stage with a bottle of water. “Thank you.” Maddie could see the director motioning for the talk-show host to speed up things. “I’ll just say that I have been threatened, but I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Looks like our time has run out. Thank you, Maddie, for visiting with us. Keep up the good work you’re doing, but stay safe.” Ms. Timmins sighed, almost as if she were relieved.

About Secrets Dark and Deep

TV anchor, Maddie Caldecott, has a secret so deeply buried within that she doesn’t remember it. But the man called Absalom knows her secret, and his threats to exact his revenge are becoming more and more intrusive. As an investigative reporter, Maddie can dig out the truth of any story, but she can’t unearth the secret she’s blocked until it’s too late.

Police Detective, Brody Messner, is at his wits end. How can he protect Maddie if she resists his every suggestion? His need to protect her has become personal. From Orlando to Zürich, he follows her, trying to stay one step ahead of her assailant—all of his notes to her, and that song. https://bit.ly/3w6o8Ka

Awakened to Life by Sarah Hanks

Awakened to Life

When I first wrote Awakened to Life, then titled Drifting In and Out of Sleep, I didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. It was 2007, I was pregnant with our third child, and we’d never gone through the adoption process. I had the seed of this idea about a woman who encounters a woman outside of an abortion clinic and offers to adopt her child while also pregnant herself. Intriguing, yes? I’d prayed outside of abortion clinics. I’d watched women go in pregnant and come out not. I’d mourned the loss of life. But I hadn’t yet adopted.

I wanted to be Eve, but I wasn’t.

Writing the novel became the catalyst for our own adoption journey. Months after it was first published in 2008, my husband and I filled out an application to adopt. Little did we know that it would take three and a half years before our son would join our family, and that the road would be far bumpier than we could have ever foreseen. We had no idea when we began the process that we’d be bringing home a seven-year-old with Down syndrome. Adopting out of birth order was never in our plan. We hadn’t conceived of an older child with special needs. And yet, he was always meant to be a part of our family. We couldn’t imagine life without him. A little over a decade later, we adopted again, this time an infant with special needs.

It was so interesting to reread the scene about Eve and Gideon’s home study after going through the home study process myself. When I wrote the scene, I relied heavily on research as I had no lived experience. And yet, it was surprisingly accurate! The emotions the adoptive family goes through when completing the process are indeed a rollercoaster. It’s a refining process, one that will lead you to the foot of the cross if you let it.

Awakened to Life is a pro-life novel that explores abortion and adoption from a variety of facets. Women who choose abortion and adoption. Doctors who practice abortion. Families who adopt. My prayer is that it drips with compassion for all involved. Our war isn’t against flesh and blood. We’re not fighting people who believe differently than we do. Our war is against an enemy who deceives women (and men) into thinking abortion is the best, or only, solution. Lord, open our eyes.

Awakened to Life and Mercy Will Follow Me, another pro-life read, are free on KU.

Eve is a bold supporter of the rights of unborn children. She prays that God will awaken the Church and pour out a spirit of adoption, but she’s never had an opportunity to live out these prayers. One summer morning outside an abortion clinic, she is given a chance.
Lisa is pregnant, trapped by fear and past tragedy. She plans to abort her baby—until she encounters Eve. Eve offers the unthinkable: she will adopt Lisa’s unborn baby in addition to raising her own unborn son. “Have your baby,” Eve pleads. “I promise you, I’ll find a way to take her into my home. Let her live.”
Awakened to Life is a powerful story of redemption, forgiveness, and restoration. It calls the Church to awaken fully to the issue of abortion and to act on behalf of the defenseless and voiceless. From prayer to adoption to offering forgiveness and healing, this novel challenges believers everywhere to take a stand for life.

Sarah Hanks switched gears from children’s ministry to full-time novelist with Mercy Will Follow Me. She and her husband have nine children, a couple of whom seem to have inherited their mother’s love for playing with words and crafting stories. Though Sarah dreams of a cabin by the beach, the family lives together in beautiful chaos in St. Charles, MO. She buys earplugs in bulk.

Small Town Secrets by Lillian Duncan

ABOUT SMALL TOWN SECRETS

On the surface, Shady Valley looks like the ideal all-American place to live with beautiful flowering trees lining both sides of the street as you enter the picturesque town. Neighbors help neighbors. Doors are often left unlocked.

Serious crimes are practically nonexistent— almost but not quite!

If Cami is to bring her best friend home, she will need to discover the deadly secrets of her friends and neighbors to find the one who wears the biggest mask.

Shady Valley Mystery

My latest release, SMALL TOWN SECRETS is based in the fictional town of Shady Valley, but does resemble my hometown of Shreve, Ohio. Except nothing this exciting happens in Shreve–which is a good thing. That’s why I like living there.

But nothing happening would make for a boring book so Shady Valley has a few secrets–secrets that could kill!

Lillian Duncan… turning faith into fiction.

For years, my tagline was “stories of faith mingled with murder & mayhem” since I wrote Christian suspense and mystery novels.

In 2012, I heard the words, “you have bilateral brain tumors.”

I had no idea how much those words would change my life, but they did. When life changes for a writer, their writing changes as well. So I wanted my tagline to reflect the new me. I still love to write suspense and mystery novels but also have branched out into other genres.

In spite of being diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors and a rare genetic disease (Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), God continues to strengthen me and give me peace and joy as well as the blessing to be able to continue to write.

I’m a multi-published author who lives in the middle of Ohio Amish country with my husband and a menagerie of pets. After more than 30 years working as a speech pathologist for children, I believe in the power of words to transform lives, especially God’s Word.

My goal is to write stories that entertain but also demonstrate God’s love for all of us. To learn more about me, visit www.lillian-duncan.com. I also have a devotional blog at www.PowerUpWithGod.com.

Last Stop by Karen Randau

LAST STOP: Unveiling Savannah Douglas

By Karen Randau

We’re here with Savannah Douglas, co-protagonist in my upcoming inspirational romantic suspense novel, LAST STOP, book #4 in my award-winning Peach Blossom Romantic Suspense series.

Savannah, can you explain the significance of the title?

Savannah: Certainly. The title encapsulates my personal journey. From the time I was 5 years old, my life had been a series of stops, each one a temporary refuge from danger, whether real or imagined.

A pivotal moment in the story forces me to decide. I could break free from the cycle of running and confront the fears instilled by my childhood, or I could keep running. It’s a transformative instant, where the weight of my past collides with the hope for a different future. Peach Blossom became my “last stop” in the literal and metaphorical sense.

Can you share a little of what happened in your childhood?

Savannah: I was just a scared little 5-year-old, clinging to my mother as we slipped away from the thunder of my father’s raging anger. We lived on the run, moving every few months to stay ahead of him. Those tough early years molded me into the person I am today. In many ways, I continued to cling to my mother until I made my stand in LAST STOP.

What other childhood experiences influenced who you are today?

Savannah: After my dad died, and we were free to return home, my granddad became my rock. The scent of his auto shop reminded me of a place where life felt normal. Fixing cars together was our language of love, a way for him to teach me strength and resilience. That same scent in LAST STOP triggered my decision to stop running.

Did the struggles of your childhood also influence your career choices?

Savannah: Yes. I became a social worker to help mend other broken families. My emotions were still too raw for that, so I found a different career that followed a script, something predictable. Little did I know, life had a plot twist waiting for me in Peach Blossom, where both careers played an important role in the story.

Why did you flee from your wedding?

Savannah: My fiancée was a charmer, with lots of money that offered stability and a smile that could light up a room. He was distracted while I walked toward him at our wedding. LAST STOP starts with me making the life-altering decision to demand more.

How did Deputy Zach Gleason enter the picture?

Savannah: Zach is a complex soul, tall and guarded, with eyes that hide a multitude of emotions. He had his own heartbreak and dark past that collided with mine. He rescued me when I was being attacked while still in my wedding gown. My appearance triggered his own issues, and he wanted nothing to do with me. But Peach Blossom had plans for both of us.

The troubles we encountered in LAST STOP ran deep, like an iceberg with most of its mass hidden beneath the water. What began as a bank robbery morphed into a battle against a much larger and sinister plot. The emotional weight of uncovering such darkness, coupled with a personal vendetta tied to Zach’s past, pushed us both to the brink and united us. I guess you could say we rescued each other.

Why should readers pre-order LAST STOP and join you on this emotional journey?

Savannah: LAST STOP is not just about the physical place or a romance. The story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

If you want to experience a story that will make your heart race, your emotions swell, and your belief in the power of love and redemption soar, then this is the adventure for you. This isn’t just a novel. It’s an emotional odyssey, a chance to witness the resilience of the human heart against the backdrop of a town fighting for its soul.

Illuminate Happy New Year! Each year I pray for a word or ...

Illuminate This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is dark-2572874_640_edited.jpg

Happy New Year!

Each year I pray for a word or theme that I can focus on. The Lord has been faithful, offering words that direct my prayer time, and in return, confirm things I had been praying about.

Last year was shift, and that was dead on. I watched loved ones shift, some by zip code with literal moves that came out of no where. Some changed jobs.

I prayerfully thought we’d see a shift globally, and throughout the year I noted headlines where leaders were voted out, passed away, abdicated, or resigned. This wasn’t just political, but in business as well.

The word for 2024 came to me in prayer in October, I believe. I think it fits perfectly with shift. In fact, with shift came shake, and shaking is still happening. If anything, it’s accelerating. How do I know?

Illuminate.

The definition as I prayed is two-fold. One, the Lord will expose people and choices that are sinful, completed in “back door” settings where they think they are getting away with it. They. are. not. This will be again global in the political and business arenas. I believe it will be nationally, regionally, and locally. There will be people we have put on a pedestal whom God will expose.

Is the illumination a humiliation tactic? Bright lights hurt my eyes. I certainly don’t want a spotlight on me. It’s hot and uncomfortable. For that, I want my life to reflect integrity and choices that measure up when you’re with me and when you’re not. For those with scandal, fraud, and literal crimes covered up, that spotlight is needed.

God longs for us all to repent.

We are in a season where we have two choices: repent or rebel. There’s no in-between, no sitting on the fence. When it comes to illuminate and the first aspect of it, Chuck Colson comes to mind. He was part of Watergate and faced prison time. He gave his life to Christ, repented, and his legacy wasn’t Watergate, it was the prison ministry he spent the rest of his life putting a spotlight on. He took his scandal and repented. He was glad for the exposure and illumination.

Illuminate also means light, and common sense tells you light overcomes darkness. Whether you crack the door a little in a dark room or swing it wide open, light takes over. Light dominates. God wants us to remember that.

Times ARE dark. They are bleak. But Christ overcame the world and His light overcomes. If we are His followers, His power and authority gave us the same promise. We have light. We illuminate because of Jesus. Whatever darkness we’re looking at, we are, in Christ, that crack of light. Instead of slamming the door in fear, swing those circumstances wide open in faith. You’ve got this. How do I know?

Jesus has you.

Already I’m seeing illuminate play out. Google the word “Diddy” and you’ll see alleged crimes and famous names. A partial Epstein list was released this week. Same deal. Trust me, these illuminations are just getting started.

I believe the church will see illumination. At first, the definition will be about exposure. The Body of Christ is too entwined with the world and horrifically tainted. That needs changing. I believe we’ll see leaders and scandals uncovered. I pray everyone repents.

Then, my sense is there will be a shift. I’m starting to see it. The Body of Christ will become Kingdom minded and return to a Biblical foundation where Jesus is Lord and His Word stands. We can’t serve the broken people that are starving for truth, and they are coming. The more God illuminates the sin, the more devastated people will be. We need to be healthy and right with Him ourselves.

Deep, I know. But 2024 isn’t a time to play around and hope for the best. It’s time to prayerfully get our hands and knees dirty. Stand up for Biblical truth. Believe and pray for restoration. And let the light of Jesus shine brilliantly in and around us in 2024.

I Say I Love You Now

I guess the whole story is I say I love you now, kind of.

Let me back up.

I grew up a Gen X kid with Silent Generation parents. They were taught not to have feelings or dare you have them, don’t you even go and express them. For someone younger, that probably makes no sense. That was how many of us my age were raised.

We didn’t hear “I love you” and in my case, we didn’t say it. It just wasn’t done, and when my mom realized what a horrific void it left amongst us, I was cemented as the emotionless robot.

If you know my last name, you realize I married an Italian family. I know it’s a stereotype, but Italians are known to be affectionate. I remember someone asking my husband about me. After all, my family doesn’t hug. Or anything.

I figured once I married, saying I love you would be natural. I certainly felt it, why not express it with words? Still, I struggled. The longer we stayed married, the more my effort to say it dwindled. I certainly show my love, and I text it and write it in all our cards, but say it? I have failed.

I wish I could tell you I made up for it as a parent. It was a case of my kids parenting me. They said I love you so naturally and often it became a habit. One I always wanted. And there it was.

Still, I dreamed it would become my thing. That I wouldn’t be so stiff at expressing myself. Oh, my face tells you how I feel, and I sure can write how much I love someone, but to say it? Those three words?

Last year I joined the Facebook group, Sister I am with You. My people. Friendships are hard. I’m an introvert. I’m weird. I have the most middle school sense of humor but you want to pray? I will join in and we are going to pray DOWN. That makes it hard to have friends. In 2023 I had to take stock and realized I had work to do.

As I prayed about making deep friendships with like-minded women, God was faithful. He developed some existing friendships, and brought someone back who years before I had not known that well. This time around we are meeting for Bible study. We’ve formed a group with the others for serious prayer for our area and the people we love.

And we say “I love you.”

Who knew I was capable? With this group it has become natural and often.

So I say I love you now. Kind of.

I have mountains to climb in this area. My husband deserves to hear it every day, more than once. Same with the kids. But my girls, local and via Marco Polo, I’m saying it! I’m saying it!

Happy Dance!

How about you? Is it easy for you to verbalize your love for someone?

Guess How Much God Loves You by Karen Ferguson

Guess How Much God Loves You

Helping kids discover God’s never-changing, never-failing, never-ending love

I recently welcomed my second grandchild (first granddaughter) into the world in September. What an absolute joy! While I’m fairly new to grandparenting, with my first not quite three years old, I’ve quickly discovered that the relationship between a grandparent and grandchild is a very special one. I believe grandparents are uniquely positioned to positively influence this next generation, and build a spiritual legacy that will make a difference for the Kingdom. I consider it a joy and a calling.

So I thought this the perfect time to introduce an important character in the Guess How Much God Loves You picture book series, Papa Joe.

Papa Joe holds a special place in my heart because he’s modeled after my own dad who went home to be with the Lord in 2019 ❤

Who is Papa Joe?

He is Lucy’s warm and wise grandfather, limited physically by his mobility scooter but by no means limited spiritually. In fact, it’s Papa Joe who Lucy comes to with questions about God. You see, Lucy is doubting God’s love because of some hurtful and hateful things said to her by her classmates. But she came to the right person with these doubts; her trusted advisor Papa Joe, who patiently takes time to reassure Lucy of God’s unconditional love. In his wisdom and with clarity on his calling as a grandfather, he takes Lucy straight to the Bible for answers to her tough questions, but in this story they don’t just read the Bible, they jump into it! They take an exciting journey back to the beginning, to God’s miraculous creation where they discover His good plan, His power and creativity, and His love for all people, including Lucy.

“Lucy Lu has a question—and it’s the biggest question of all: Does God really love me? Using the wonders of the creation story, her Papa offers a sweetly reassuring and scriptural answer. And it’s the answer all children—from one to ninety two—need to hear.” Tama Fortner, ECPA award-winning and bestselling writer.

I’ve worked with children throughout my adult life, and one of my biggest desires has been to help them see themselves through God’s eyes. To know they are immensely valued, and unconditionally loved by the Creator of the universe.

So when I sat down to write a children’s book series I knew it would have to include two things that are important to raising strong, spiritually healthy children.

First, it had to be Bible based. This is because God’s Word isliving and powerful; it’s what changes lives. I wanted to point young people directly to the Bible, helping them understand it can be trusted, and that God can be trusted. This book series does just that by covering key events in biblical history that demonstrate God’s all powerful, all knowing, and all loving character towards all people.

Second, it had to deliver a clear, consistent message of God’s never-changing, never-failing, never-ending love. Kids are hungry to know unconditional love, which can only be completely fulfilled by God.  That’s why more than a fun story, I wanted to create something that pointed kids to God’s unchangeable truths and His unchanging love for them. And I wanted Lucy’s partner to be a wise, warm, witty, and accessible character – just like my dad 🙂

Guess How Much God Loves You is a seven part series that covers unique periods in Bible history that will help young readers grow a firm foundation of faith in God and His Good Character.

This first book starts at the very beginning with the Creation Account as recorded in Genesis 🌎  Young readers will discover just how this marvelous, majestic world was created, and learn about their unique role in it as special creations of God, formed in His image.

“What a delightful book to help youngsters understand how much God loves them! With beautiful illustrations and a simple, but creative way to help young children understand the story of how our world was created by God, this charming picture book will become a family favorite. I highly recommend this book for young children.” Carol Round, international self-syndicated Christian columnist, author and inspirational speaker .

Do you know a child that needs to hear this important message?
