Send Me Your Bubble Wrap!

Since I posted about art pricing yesterday, a couple of people have offered to send me odds and ends of art supplies, which would be awesome. But I forgot to mention that, piece for piece, I probably spend more on packaging materials than I do on art supplies. I have a horror of something arriving damaged, and bubble wrap is ridiculously expensive. I use as much recycled material (newspaper, plastic carrier bags, stuff from packages I've received) as possible, but I still end up buying a lot of crap.

So if you'd like to recycle some trash and help out a semi-starving artist, one way you can help is to send me your used, clean bubble wrap! It's bulky, but you can stuff quite a bit into a padded envelope or small box, and of course it's light. Even a couple of sheets here and there will be useful. Here's the address:

PZB
P.O. Box 750151
New Orleans LA 70175

Thanks!

The Cost of Art

I'm in the process of transferring my studio from Foreclosure House to New Adventure Duplex, so my rate of productivity will probably slow down some in the next few weeks, but I'll definitely be listing new NOLA Crosses on PZBART this evening. Also a very Joseph Cornell-inspired piece called "Earth, Sky, Sea."

I've been thinking and reading about how to price art. Some people tell me that I'm underpricing mine, and I do like to keep my pieces affordable, but it's still rare for me to sell any of the pieces that cost $100 or over. I seldom even get lower offers on them, though that may have to do with Etsy's lack of a best offer option. The $100+ pieces are priced that high because they were labor-intensive to make, or because I like them enough that I'm unwilling to let them go for less, or both. Materials are rarely a big factor in pricing, as I like to use a lot of found objects and inexpensive odds and ends -- as I was writing that last paragraph, Grey came in from a trip to Home Depot and brought me three packs of zinc lock washers, which cost $1.18 for a pack of 18 and will adorn countless NOLA Crosses.

Skulls

Today, among other interesting activities, I took delivery of eight animal skulls purchased on Etsy. The seller identifies them as, variously, "raccoon, skunk, muskrat, fox, turkey, beaver, coyote and bobcat." This is his photo:

I'm tentatively identifying them as follows, but welcome corrections.

Top row, L-R: coyote, beaver, raccoon, fox

Middle row, L-R: bobcat, skunk, muskrat

Bottom: turkey (obviously)

Moving Out

I'm sitting in my living room watching the cats play with a plastic skeleton hand. One month from today, I must be out of my house due to foreclosure. It's stressful, but Grey has been making the process as smooth as possible for me, going to superhuman lengths to help me set up my new studio/office in the space we're going to share (a small duplex, the studio half of which is unfinished). So I will try not to have a heart attackackackack (you ought to know by now). I worry more about how the cats will adjust than how I will; some of them will be moving in with us, some with my mother and her four dogs, and they'll all hate it at first, anyway. At least the snakes don't care where they are as long as they're warm.

There are new NOLA Crosses for sale at PZBART, and other things too.
