#Review of Da Vinci Code: Illustrated Edition
I re-read this book of @authordanbrown because I had access to this special edition, which offered wonderful pictures of places, artwork, and much more mentioned in the novel. Despite having read this in 2005, I still found the story interesting, paying more attention to the subtle details and pictures. I feel the Illustrated edition creates such a great ambience in which to read the novel. And, of course, as many of you #readers know, numerous secrets are revealed that are actually factual....

Review of Pirate Latitudes
Based on historical fact, Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton (posthumously) tells the tale of Capt Charles Hunter, a privateer or pirate depending on who you ask, and his quest for Spanish gold and jewels. It is a rollicking sea adventure with dastardly villains, bawdy seamen, and women of questionable virtue. Quite fun and filled with interesting historical facts about the 17th century privateering racket. If you enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean (movies), then this should fill that space i...

Review of The Prisoner of Heaven
Once again, Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafon has given a splendid, magical story from the streets of Barcelona (me encanta esta ciudad). This is the third story in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series and focuses much more on Fermin Romero de Torres and his previous life, though Daniel Sempere features prominently. While I liked this much more than Angel’s Game (it explains much of what was unclear in that story), I was surprised that a writer of Zafon’s abilities would duplicate, more or l...

Earth Day is Everyday
Celebrations for the Earth flourished over the weekend and today. Of course I participated, but more importantly I spent time digesting the fact that without this precious orb we all inhabit we are lost (not a new realization, to be sure).
In fact, I would venture to say that many of us are already lost, at least in the sense of not recognizing the critical nature of sustainable thinking, plans and measures to ensure the ongoing health of the planet, not only for humans, but as many other spec...

Review of The Brotherhood of the Holy Shroud
Julia Navarro gives a very interesting story, which deserves 5 stars. It deftly blends the ancient history of the Holy Shroud (currently residing in Turin, Italy) with that of present day action offers a compelling tale. A drawback is that the Holy Shroud is the main character, which means that the other characters (people) do not get front and center attention, thus leaving me without as much of a human connection with any of them. For that flaw, and a bit of over-writing, I give 3.5 stars.
