New York Times: “Questions About Politicians’ Use of ‘Leadership PACs’”

the-new-york-times“WASHINGTON — A new book from a conservative advocate of tighter financial controls on members of Congress seeks to draw attention to a series of disclosures about their fund-raising activities – some potentially damaging, others certainly embarrassing – which could prove uncomfortable for some on Capitol Hill.

The author is Peter Schweizer, a fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, whose last book focused on how members of both parties enriched themselves by trading stock based on information they obtained by virtue of their positions in Congress. The book — and the news coverage of it — helped lead to the Stock Act, which banned insider trading for representatives and senators but stopped far short of the systemic changes advocates like Mr. Schweizer said were necessary.”

Breitbart Exclusive–Palin: “Congress Has America Caught Up in an Endless Extortion Scheme”

“…Washington has morphed into an extortion racket, a place where members of the permanent political class threaten to inflict legislative and regulatory pain to extract campaign donations that they can then siphon into the pockets of themselves and their family members.

In a new book featured this Sunday on 60 Minutes titled Extortion: How Politicians Extract Your Money, Buy Votes, and Line Their Own Pockets, Peter Schweizer explains how Washington politicians use a set of mafia-style legislative tactics to extort people and industries into donating to them out of fear of political and legal reprisals…”

Washington Examiner: “Nancy Pelosi tops all others in fundraising; $52 million for Democrats”

“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has blown away all competitors in the race to be the top congressional fundraiser, pulling down more than $52 million for Democratic candidates in 2012, or more than $120,000 for every congressional district, not including her own, according to a new investigative report.

In so-called “dues” and other contributions required of most House members, she topped every lawmaker of either party, making a joke of her $800,000 requirement leveled by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

By comparison, Republican Speaker John Boehner met his $418,347 dues total for 2013, according to charts unearthed in the new book “Extortion: How Politicians Extract Your Money, Buy Votes, and Line Their Own Pockets,” by Peter Schweizer of the Government Accountability Institute.”

Breitbart: “Congresswoman Funneled $294,245 in Campaign Cash to Herself”

“Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-CA) has bagged at least $294,245 since 1998 by loaning her congressional campaign money at interest rates up to 18%–a scheme that effectively funneled campaign contributor donations directly into her personal bank account.”

60 Minutes: “Washington’s open secret: Profitable PACs [TRANSCRIPT]

“Most Americans believe it’s against the law for congressmen and senators to profit personally from their political office but it’s an open secret in Washington that that’s not the case. As the saying goes the real scandal in Washington isn’t what’s illegal, it’s what is legal…

Peter Schweizer: I think campaign fundraising is increasingly not just about winning elections. It’s a lifestyle subsidy.

Peter Schweizer, is an author and fellow at the Hoover Institution. For the past few years, he and a team of researchers have been investigating the way congressmen and senators have personally benefited from the hundreds of millions of dollars in political contributions that have poured into the system.”

NRO: GAI Data Reveals Eye-Opening Look at Obama’s Schedule

“As the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) calculated, and Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen first reported, Obama attended only 43.8 percent of his PDBs between January 23, 2009 (three days after his inauguration), and May 31, 2012. Available nearly every day, the PDB allows the commander-in-chief to hear directly from top intelligence professionals about the latest threats to U.S. safety. These experts are on hand to answer questions, hear suggestions, and otherwise help Obama foil America’s enemies.

But Obama has had higher priorities.

According to GAI’s data, which was culled from the official White House calendar andPolitico’s news coverage of that schedule, Obama chose to skip his PDBs and, instead, simply read his briefing book. This is a bit like studying one’s chest X-rays at home, having spurned a radiologist’s offer to interpret them and answer pertinent questions. In this sense, Obama quietly reviewed his national-security X-rays alone during 56.2 percent of the time GAI analyzed. In 2011, Obama missed 61.6 percent of his PDBs.”
