One of the Giants

...on whose shoulders we try, precariously, to balance. RIP Moebius.

Mimi and Wayne's

I was recently in a conversation that followed one of those circuitous routes from things I did while it rained in Austin, Texas, to an amazing antique store there, to collaboration with found imagery, and eventually to people who paint on thrift store paintings. Which reminded me of Wayne White.
Last Summer after Comic-con Wayne and (fellow D&Q cartoonist) Mimi Pond invited some of us (see here) to their place in L.A. for lunch. Which was awesome. And I got a couple of pictures of the in-progress antique-French-wallpaper-inspired mural in their dining room, as well as Wayne's studio.

Who wants to help me get this thing open?

My friend Todd sent me this link the other day about a sphere falling out of the sky into the desert in Namibia. They're calling it "Space Junk". Get real. It's totally an egg.

(By the way a selection of Todd's Owl Scouts project is up at Lula until mid January, with a closing reception on the 10th.)

– 1091 shopping days left

In 2008 I was asked by the Comics Journal to contribute a list of ideas for a sort of year end gift guide thing. I drew these two strips instead... and then decided not to be a pest, and sent in a real list. But I've been going through these old sketchbooks lately, as part of a book project, came across these, and realized I never did put them up. Posting them today in honor of the shortest day of the year. Or whatever.

ICINORI

Among the amazing people I met and worked with in France were Raphael Urwiller and Mayumi Otero who work as printmakers and book artists under the name Icinori. They make the kind of stuff that simultaneously makes you happy to be alive and stoked to get back to work, and also makes you kind of want to give up because you'll never make anything quite so quietly beautiful, unexpected and profound. They designed and printed the collaborative, Hercules themed screen printed book I mentioned here (toward the bottom).

Angus McKie

Back in April I did a post about this amazing book from the 80s that I'd rediscovered of gorgeous paintings and histories of spaceships. Three of the images I included in the post were by a guy named Angus McKie. When I was in Newcastle in October I had the good fortune to meet a friend of a friend of the man himself and was allowed to hold on to a couple of his comics for a day. Unfortunately I didn't really have time to actually read them. Which is a shame. Just look.

How have I not seen this done before? A punch up in front of a projection in a porn theatre? Brilliant.

It's like part Heavy Metal, part Hitchhiker's Guide, part CF, part Little Annie Fanny part Star Wars. And part just straight up sublime epic oil painting. Apparently he's still working.
