Religious Lives of Youth People- “Faithful Authenticity” with Andrew Root

We all have a deep desire to belong and to be understood. As we move through different stages of life and different cultural realities, we are constantly navigating what it looks like to live into our most authentic selves. For teenagers, this process carries a lot of insecurity and awkwardness, which can stir up anxiety in pastors, youth ministers, and church leaders. How can we faithfully equip young people with a strong sense of identity and purpose, given to them by God? How can we help young people gain a better understanding of their unique stories?

In this episode, Chris and Eddie are joined by Dr. Andrew Root, professor of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary. Dr. Root has written a series of books revolving around Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age, and his book Faith Formation in a Secular Agespecifically examines the church’s hopeful attitude that a “youthful spirit” will save the church. Root speaks to the power of testimony, confession, and storytelling to help teenagers and young adults navigate their own complicated stories. Root challenges us to greater curiosity and stronger questions that will benefit not only the lives of young people, but the church as a whole.

New Creation Conversations

New Creation Conversations Episode 024 – Dr. Andrew Root

Welcome to episode twenty-four of New Creation Conversations. In today’s conversation I’m joined by Dr. Andrew Root. Andy is Professor and Chair of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary. He is considered by many as one of the leading scholars on youth ministry and spiritual formation in the world. He is an alum of Bethel College, received MDiv and ThM degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary, and has a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Andy has written twenty or so books. We take time to talk about some of his recent and very significant books on spiritual formation. In the last few years Andy has completed a trilogy on spiritual formation on Ministry in a Secular Age. Using the philosophical work of Charles E. Taylor and Hartmut Rosa, Andy address spiritual formation, the pastor, and the congregation in the secular age. We also talk about his most recent book on youth ministry – The End of Youth Ministry ? … and (one of my favorites) The Grace of Dogs.

Avenue for Faith

Faith Formation In A Secular Age: An Interview With Dr. Andrew Root | Episode 13

For the first time, Gallup shows less than 50% of Americans attend church. What does faith formation look like in an increasingly secular age?  In this thirteenth episode, we explore youth ministry and adult education for this place and time.

My guest today is Dr. Andrew Root. A professor at Luther Seminary, Andrew is an eclectic thinker and author. He has written several important works on the theology of youth ministry, a biography of Bonhoeffer, and even a book on dogs. Drawing on the philosophy of Charles Taylor, he recently completed a trilogy on “ministry in a secular age.”

Andy’s Movie Club: Brad’s Status

It’s the middle of summer and who knows if we’ll ever watch movies in the theater again.  But…we DO have another episode of Andy’s Movie Club featuring a movie that you can stream at-home and watch along with us!

This time we’re watching the Amazon original movie “Brad’s Status” starring Ben Stiller.  If you’re old like us you’ll love it and identify with Brad and his mid-life crisis.  If you’re under 35 you’ll probably think Brad is a selfish jerk.  But still give it a shot!

The movie is all about resonance, relationships, being vs. having, and finding the good life.  It’s almost like Hartmut Rosa and Charles Taylor wrote the darn thing!

Sin in the Age of Authenticity

How does sin work in the Age of Authenticity?  And why are both grace and sin eclipsed in a secular age?  We dig into the listener mailbag this week to explore all that and more.  Huge shout-out to Zoe for the great question this week.

ep. 24: The Congregation in a Secular Age

The trilogy is complete.  Andy’s *brand new* book – the Congregation in a Secular Age – is out now.  It’s book #3 in his Secular Age trilogy and, unlike other third installments of trilogies, features no Ewoks whatsoever.

Some of the themes are familiar to listeners of the pod, but we took a turn and got into some fascinating talk about ministry & the pandemic.
