The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid at Peace

By Angel del Corazón

Rocco and Willow landed in Key West, the southernmost point of the continental United States. My grandmother was seventeen years old in the winter of 1927 when she stepped onto the porch of her pretty new home. It was a gingerbread house, and in those days, families designed the woodwork trim that, according to unwritten law, was not to be copied. With a nod to his pastand a reminder to make good on his bargain with Mother MaryRocco had a special trim made of liquor...

The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid’s Broken Heart

By Angel del Corazón

Poor Willow sunk into a funk after Rocco, the promised one, disappeared. Her hopes and beliefs shifted underneath her like wet sand. How could Yemayá, the Powerful Mother of The Sea, deliver her a savior only to leave her heartbroken and alone once more? Perhaps Mother Mermaid no longer loved her.

Now you might say that my grandmothers faith in a mermaid was foolish. But try, if you will, to set aside your own religious prejudice and regard the structural blueprint of...

The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid in Love

By Angel del Corazón

On a sunny morning in December 1932, Captain Robert Porecca walked from his cabin onto the gleaming teak deck aboard the Stella Maris, a sleek, seventy-five foot yacht, and lit a cigarette. A small wave rocked the boat in its berth at Prince George Wharf; sunlight winked off the brass fittings. Captain Porecca tugged his white jacket over his burly figure and with a mixture of dread and satisfaction surveyed Nassau Harbor. The scruffy tugboat tied up along the wharf didnt...

THE MERMAID CHRONICLES: A Mermaid’s Search For The One

By Angel del Corazón

Tears of happiness rained down her cheeks.

Are you hurt?

His apparent fear of the water upset Willow and she laughed. This was not a good sign. She also couldnt deny that the promised one was a stocky man unlike Thomas. And yet hadnt her sweet cousin freed her from that awful prison? She must woo him like the animals of the sea. Then she would be certain.

She gave him a playful shove, imitating a porpoise in heat. He might have wondered at her strange behavior but he...

The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid Condemned

By Angel del Corazón

By the time Willow reached puberty, her mother decided to check on her spiritual growth. As her family walked home one Sunday afternoon, Willow followed behind, her slender figure swaying on her spindly legs, the greenish tint in her hair glittering in the sun.

Rebecca retreated to her side and in a straightforward manner said, Do you love the Lord God, Willow?

Willow shook with such vehemence that Rebecca reached for her and stumbled over the rocks. Her husband rushed to...

The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid’s Education

By Angel del Corazón

When my grandmother Willow was three years old, her mother Rebecca chose Fearless Neely, a young mild-mannered Bahamian girl, to look after her strange daughter. Willows mixed up reactions to the simplest stimulus grew more pronounced each year, or satanic, as Rebecca saw it, until she could no longer abide the sight of her.

Do as you will, Fearless, Rebecca told her. Simply do not bother me.

Fearless and her charge left by early light to travel the island each morning....

The Mermaid Chronicles: A Mermaid is Born

By Angel del Corazón

They say that a sudden tempest raged the day my grandmother Willow was born on Eleuthra Island in the Bahamas. The inhabitants of Gregory Town, descendants of the English Eleutherian Adventurers who sought religious freedom in the mid 1600s, sensed a communal dread. Across the island, the trumpet sounds of conch shells filled the air as the islanders called to the sea goddess Yemayá for aid. As the mournful bellows filled the air, Willow descended from the womb of Rebecca...
