How Netanyahu Helped Destroy The Obama Promise

Marc Lynch warns that "Arab confidence in Obama is collapsing." He
flags a new survey as evidence:

The survey's findings suggest overwhelmingly that it is theadministration's failures on the Israeli-Palestinian front which drovethe collapse in Arab attitudes towards Obama. Sixty-one percent of therespondents say that this is the area in which they are mostdisappointed (Iraq, at 27 percent, is the only other issue which cracksdouble digits -- only one percent name "spreading democracy"). ...

Kristol's Self-Parody

He advises Obama to become a far right neocon to avoid a "failed presidency". The three priorities he argues for are an indefinite commitment to nation-building and war in Afghanistan; adding $700 billion to the debt by stopping the expiration of the Bush tax cuts for those earning more than a quarter of a million a year; and opposing the Cordoba Initiative, which Kristol insists is run by a "Wahhabist". Oh, and for good measure: a bombing campaign in Iran! In other words, the man who was...

The Facts, Ctd

Orin Kerr keeps asking how much the factual record matters in Perry v Schwarzenegger:

Appellate judges will naturally discount, ifnot entirely ignore, efforts to create false certainty out of unknownsby stating that they are facts. To pick an extreme example, imagineJudge Walker made a factual finding that "the defendant's position thatProp 8 is unconstitutional is incorrect." If appellate courts have todefer to everything a District Judge labels a fact, then would thatmean the appellate...

131,000 Jobs Lost

Leonhardt reads the jobs report and finds some glimmers of hope. Avent's analysis is similar:

All things considered, the view is of an economy that continues torecover, adding private employment and utilising (and paying) existingworkers more. But that recovery is facing stiff headwinds from twosources—the drawdown in government activity associated with the end ofstimulus and continued cuts at the state and local level, and theburden of large pool of marginally attached workers and...

"The People"

Blumenthal compares dueling polls on the Bush tax cuts:

What these seemingly contradictory results imply ... is that alarge number of Americans are hazy on the details of whose taxes werecut when George W. Bush was president, whether those cuts were intendedto be temporary or permanent, what impact they have had on the deficitand the terms of the current debate. As such, their reactions to pollquestions on the subject may vary widely depending on the language usedand the options offered.

If...

On Wedge Issues

Frum doesn't believe that same-sex marriage initiatives helped Bush in 2004:

Of the 5 states in which George W. Bush's vote rose MOST between
2000 and 2004, not one had a same-sex marriage initiative on the
ballot. Of the 10 states in which Bush's vote rose LEAST, three had
such an initiative. Some say Ohio was tipped to Bush by a same-sex marriage initiative.
But Bush won Ohio in 2000. Measured by increase in the Bush share of
the vote, Ohio ranked 41 out of 50.
