I walk my dogs, go for a hike, go for a drive, or just try to write from a different room in the house (I use a portable laptop). If I'm really stuck it's usually because there is something wrong with the story. I then ask myself a few questions: Are the characters or the story too predictable? Is there a loose thread I've left hanging? Is there something I've tried to fudge, something awkward that is now coming back to haunt me? Writer's block is never fun but it does force you to really wrestle with the material, and keeps you from being a lazy writer.(less)

People I Love Who Hate Fiction

...could describe several members of my family. Well, let me rephrase that, because "hate" is such a strong word. Substitute "don't care for," or "dislike," but it comes down to the same thing; I have close family members who have not read even one of my books. It took me awhile to realize this, but not everyone loves to read fiction, even good fiction. It could be the most profound, the most ente Read more of this blog post »
