This Way to Egress: Looking Back

Mick Garris’s anthology film Nightmare Cinema was released to theatres four years ago this month, with premiere events held at The Dynasty Typewriter and Arena Cinelounce in LA, the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, the Parkway Theatre in Pittsburgh, and others. I covered those events in previous blog posts, along with accounts of earlier festival screenings in Canada, England, Ireland, and the US.

But this month marks another Nightmare Cinema anniversary, and unlike the film’s release, it’s one I hav...

This Week on PSMT:The Mystery of the Hidden Key

Last fall, in the final act of Prime Stage Mystery Theatre’s “In the Ghost Light’s Glow,” we discovered a key inside the secret compartment of an old pencil box.

Then, last week, in Act IV of “The Elf in the Wardrobe,” that key made a return appearance as our characters attempted to open a locked wardrobe that they discovered in the basement of the Newtowne Theatre.

And now it seems mystery writer August LaFleur thinks that key will unlock the wardrobe. Unfortunately, the wardrobe has no keyhole...

Overcoming Writer’s Block:Bono, R.E.M. & The Doorway Effect

Some of the best advice for overcoming writer’s block comes from U2’s Bono by way of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. At least, I think that’s the case … though try as I might, I can’t locate any record of the interview.

Nor do I recall anything else said in the interview or even if I came across it in a video, audio, or magazine. But I do recall that at one point the conversation turned to songwriting, and it was then that Stipe related Bono’s remedy: remedy: “Leave the room,” Stipe said … [read more at...

This Week on Mystery Theatre:Knock-Code Charts & Ancient Alphabets

Can the arrangement of carved squares on the front of a locked wardrobe provide a clue for decoding the tapping sounds coming from within? And what about the red-and-white dragon heads in the center of each square? Could they possibly indicate the language of the coded message?

Those are just some of the questions you and mystery writer August LaFleur will consider in this week’s installment of Prime Stage Mystery Theatre.

The episode drops on March 16, at which point … [more at The 21st-Century...
