I got my first book contract by winning a contest. This was used for the big reveal at the award announcement.

There it was, big as life, the cover of my first published novel. About knocked me off my feet.

Dennis Lehane is another big reason I got into both reading and writing crime fiction. I loved the Kenzie/Gennaro series, but when MYSTIC RIVER was published, it was a Beatles on Ed Sullivan moment for me. It was the book where I said, “That’s it. That’s the book I want to write.”

I was lucky enough to meet Dennis and spend some time with him not long after my first book came out. I went full fanboy- to a level I cringe to recall. But he gave me a great inscription anyway.

So thank you, Mr. Lehane, both for the inspiration and for not calling security on me.

James Lee Burke has been a tremendous influence. When I got back to New York after my second Mardi Gras, a co-worker handed me three Robichaux books. Fueled my interest in Louisiana, New Orleans, and crime fiction. Within five years of being hand CADILLAC JUKEBOX I had an apartment on St. Charles Avenue and was eating oysters at the Pearl. Thank you, Big Mon. You just never know.
