My first favorite band, ever since my big brother sat me down and made me listen to the Greatest Hits album. Make no mistake, I went on to collect them all.
It always amazed me that Henley & Frey had such distinct voices, but still blended together so perfectly. This, to me, is the essence of pop, that every little beat, note, and rhyme is exactly where it should be (and yes, I am also pro-Oxford comma. Haters can fuck off).
Listening to this now, what strikes me is the Southern California-ness of it. It’s undeniable but elusive at the same time. It’s like they brought the beach right into the recording studio.
I kiiiinda saw an Eagles reunion in 1986, at a benefit to stop pollution in Long Beach, CA. Glenn Frey was in a hospital in Colorado with an intestinal issue, and it seems weird that that’s part of what ultimately killed him. What’s weird about it? I guess nothing, really. They showed him on a screen strumming and singing Best of My Love from his hospital bed, and the rest of the band joined in.
When I finally did get to see them all together, it was the “Hell Freezes Over” tour (thanks, Sherry!). The whole event seemed to me a completely meretricious money grab, but that didn’t stop the tears raining out of my face when I heard “Wasted Time” for the first time in years. I sincerely did not know what the fuck was wrong with me. It was as if a button had been pressed somewhere.
Yes, they were full of themselves. Yes, they were slickly produced. Yes, they did truckloads of drugs and fucked underage girls and trashed hotel rooms. But they also helped build my childhood.
Okay, I’m done. That’s about as insightful as I’m going to get, I’m afraid.
“But they also helped build my childhood” pretty much says it all.
