C.A. Bauer (Carolyn) has "listened to" animals for as long as she can remember. The mystical connection between humans and horses is a constant in The White Horses (July 1999). Born in Illinois, Bauer grew up in Colorado where she spent her childhood exploring the backroads of the Rocky Mountain West with her family and friends — on foot, in an ancient Jeep crammed with ten people (don't ask) and on horseback. Bauer is President of Women Writing the West, and is a member of the Oregon-California Trails Association, Western Writers of America and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers.

Of predominantly Irish ancestry, Bauer is a student of Celtic myth, Irish lore and all things Equine—and is an accomplished horsewoman. From numerous awards at Rocky Mountain Dressage Society competitions, to the rough and tumble world of Polocrosse, she has capitalized on her bond with horses to compete successfully in the show ring and on the field, as well as on fall roundups. In addition, she has used her skills as a 4-H Horsemanship assistant leader.

Bauer has worked as an intern/general assignment reporter for the Denver Rocky Mountain News, where she continues to review for the Sunday Books section. She also served as an editor and layout specialist at Chockstone Press, a specialty non-fiction house specializing in mountain and rock climbing books, and at Quilter's Newsletter Magazine where she wrote news columns and edited feature layouts. Bauer has written for national and local publications including Editor & Publisher, Colorado Homes & Lifestyles, Colorado Editor, The Roundup, The Retired Officer, and many others.
