Favorite bit of writing from "The Witch's Backbone" this morning,

“Yeah, that’s messed up.” Susan wanted to say something reassuring, but no matter how you looked at this they were up here with something unknown. If it was the legendary witch, then maybe Tara was right and she was cursed and could drop dead at any second. Not only that, but they were all at risk of meeting the same fate tonight. If it were a real live, flesh and blood, crazy cannibal hermit woman, well, then they may not even live through the night at all. How did you put a positive spin on those two options? “We should post a guard,” she said instead. “Someone to keep the fire going and an eye and ear out, just in case. I mean, there’s other things out here, too, bears and coyotes and stuff like that.”

I may have failed at an NYE drunken stupor, but writing happened last night. Chapter 16 comes in at 1849 words.
