Movers/Shakers/Makers/Carers Who are Making Our Intelligences Visible to Us

As I have dialled into the multitude of digital nomad media, I have gradually discovered those who have clustered together edgy inquiries amidst the interstitial zones of the flow of change. I now notice many partial truths are lighting up the city.

This morning I wondered if there is a meta-pattern to the intelligences? Can we find some or all of the intelligences flashing to life in the Integral City GPS ? Here are some bullet points of what I am noticing.

Contexting Intelligences

Ecological Intelligence – from the Ecocity conference – now translated online. Flashed awake in Lahti; Intensity of David Attenborough – extinction and bio-diversity;  Charles Eisenstein – Climate, Covid, Fires, ReframesHans Andeweg, Peter Merry/ECOIntention
Emergent Intelligence – from the voices of Karen O’Brien/You Matter More Than You ThinkTerry Patten – State of Emergence; Jude Currivan/WholeWorld View
Integral Intelligence – from Integral Europe Conference 2020; Integral LifeTerry Patten/State of Emergence
Living IntelligenceExtinction Rebellion; Citizens Assembly; Youth Assembly – Unity/Peace Youth message to UN

Individual Intelligences

Inner IntelligenceKaren O’Brien /You Matter More Than You Think ; Charles Eisenstein
Outer IntelligenceElisabet Sahtouris on Covid19 ; Vinay Gupta – awakening/awoke behaviours of business/innovators

Collective Intelligences

Structural IntelligencesCities that Serve Citizens – Beth Sanders; Vinay Gupta – Hexayurt, Ethereum, Mattereum; Seeds; Co-Creating Europe; Auroville – City for HumanityEnlivening Edge – Power of Organizations.
Cultural/Storytelling IntelligenceDiana Claire Douglas/Knowing Field StoriesConscious Evolution Summit 2020; World Unity Peace Week 2020; Lev Gordon – Living CitiesJim Garrison- Humanity Rising; Findhorn Foundation Online Summit – 3 Principles; Caravan of Unity – EUJeff Salzman – Daily Evolver;  Ellen van Dongen/ Integral City Lifemaps using Master Code of Care /4 Voices

Strategic Intelligences

Inquiry IntelligenceCharles Eisenstein; Karen O’Brien – Quantum Social Science; Terry Patten – State of Emergence
Meshworking IntelligencesUnity Peace Conference, Ben BowlerAnne-Marie Voorhoeve/ The Hague Centre for Governance, Innovation, Emergence; Coaching Conclave 2020 India
Navigating IntelligenceVinay Gupta – Resource Allocation Strategies; Ross Hall/ Weaving Labs

Evolutionary Intelligence

Jim Garrison – Humanity Rising;  David Spangler – Lorians; Jude Currivan/WholeWorld View; Puria Kaistle Conscious Evolution Summit

In blogs that follow I will unpack for the city, the “what/so what/ now what” of some of these patterns arising from the 5 sets of Intelligences.

Breakdown Deepens, Divine Remix Stalls in the City

One of the beautiful outcomes of the noosphere that has unfolded through the internet and the ecology of online media it has spawned is that we are no longer tied to the broadcast networks to curate our news. True enough the plural-cast media has shredded into a thousand-and-one channels that can be as narrow as one opinion-maker.

But tribal-media has emerged so that one can immerse oneself in the beliefs, worldviews and attitudes of the multiple voices who resonate and cohere perspectives around topics, issues, challenges and opportunities.

Amongst the media ecology are emerging digital nomads manifesting as taste-testing inter-viewers, deep-diving seekers, and hum-in-forming strange attractors who give me many chances to titillate, strengthen and reconnect my synaptic linkages. I am often slow to make meaning. I need to marinate in the stew of expressions, experiences and exonerations before the discernible patterns emerge and break free to surface like rafts floating in the river of life.

It is like I go through the panarchic cycle of knowing my existing world (at the top of the S curve), then as I slide down the beginning of the back cycle when all the world breaks apart, I detach and witness the breakdowns that surround me, grab at me and try to pull me under. In this stage I let go of balance, and strain for buoyancy. I notice how difficult it is to keep my eyes open, my ears alert, my mouth tasting strange mixes of unpleasant flavours, my nose sniffing the air for smoke and toxins, my skin parched for comforting touch. It is difficult to name happiness, feel comfort(ed) or find inspiration (my end of day practice).

It feels like I am in the breakdown stage for a very long time – though this year of pandemic it has been a “mere” 7 months – which is nothing in the timespan of evolution. I hear some people calling this time the “dark night of the soul” for humanity or even the globe. It may well be, because it is one of our first globally co-experienced breakdowns.

In some localities, I notice the beginnings of the shift from breakdown to the re-distribution stage – the scattering and eventual re-mix of the elements. Today, after group meditation, I heard some people share how accepting the breakdown was allowing them to consider standing back – as Gen Boomers – to let the next generations come forward with a new world order. But I suspect any semblance of a new world order is very premature. As usual, the stages of change around the globe are not equally distributed.

Where we have not really felt the pain. Where we have not chosen to walk into the refiner’s fire so that all our elements can be released. Where we have not seen that I/We are They/Them. The phoenix cannot yet arise.

For everything there is a season … and this is the season of letting go. Falling into the abyss – trying to remember in the dark depths of the bottom, there may be some kind of buoyancy in a distant future. But I think I am going to have to go deeper than ever before – beyond all my assumptions of safety and hope. Being willing to release all I am. All I have been. And let Life use me for Her ends. My buoyancy may have to be traded for compliancy – not with rules or regulations made by others – but with the Flow of Life. Cutting loose from the structures of the old norms and serving the Great I Don’t Know. If I don’t let go (and let God) then I will just stall the Divine Remix.

One thing is for sure – we are a lonnnnnng way from breakthrough to a new pattern/new normal. Trust, faith, surrender may add weights to take us to a deeper bottom yet, long before they become life jackets that may float us back to a surface where new vision is possible.

Lifemaps – Waking Up the Human Hive in Europe Caravan of Unity

This Blog is by Guest Blogger, Ellen van Dongen, Creator of the Lifemaps Experience

September 21, 2020 was the date for World Peace Day.  The Caravan of Unity, initiated by Co-Creating Europe, has been travelling through many places in this direction over the last weeks. Our project team became one of the travelling partners in the Caravan. Our purpose: energizing the Caravan by creating a Game – to imagine Lifemaps waking up the Master Code in Human Hives in Europe.

Coming together

Anne-Marie Voorhoeve, member of the Integral City core group and one of the key co-creators in Co-Creating Europe, invited Marilyn Hamilton, founder of Integral City, to be part of the Caravan. Marilyn surprised me by drafting a proposal for a project and formulating the purpose, mentioned above. I was really inspired. She had been following my endeavours to create Lifemaps in support of the Master Code of Care, since I am also one of the members of the core group.

Four other people joined the project team – all of them with affinity to the development of our human hives: Patrizzia Cappelletti Rocha from Portugal, Rasa Kvaukaite from Lithuania, Julian Baller from Germany and  Taina Ketola from Finland. They are already familiar with Integral City, because they followed a course with Marilyn. Julian, being the Project Lead for the Caravan of Unity, brought in the mission, intentions and actions of the Caravan. Personally I could sense the waves of positive energy all along our route. Our team set out to jointly create and prepare for workshops to facilitate the game and find groups of 4 people in European cities, with whom to play it. We invited Unity and Peace into our project. The Master Code of Care would guide us as well as be embedded in the Lifemaps Game.

The city as the Human Hive

Integral City envisions the city as a human hive, in which people are living together harmoniously, applying the Master Code. Humans are quite a young species, when compared to the bees. We can learn much from them about the strength and coherence of their communities as well as the way they take care of their surroundings. The bees have special roles for different functions.  Four of those roles offer a great example for the human hive. They can be seen as 4 archetypal voices that have to work closely together for a healthy and peaceful city: Citizens, Civic Managers, Civil Society (Third Sector) and Business/Innovators. Watch this short video (6 min.) to find out more.

The City as a Human Hive video

The Master Code

The Master Code – such a simple statement you would think: taking care of self, others, place and planet. I have made my mission of it – put as a question: In transformation towards a natural world. Taking care of self, other, place, planet. How can I do that: Guarding all four, at every single step? It is a real challenge to apply this code on a day-to-day basis, but reflecting about it brings new ideas, new ways forward, every time.

Lifemaps

Lifemaps are designed as a table top game with a poster, sticker sets and symbols. They help to visualize what is going on around key themes in the world, like the Pandemic or Climate Change. To find out how to make sense of the whole situation, individually and collectively. They provide a realistic overview, show connections and priorities, and indicators for action. While working with superordinate goals and principles, they point towards new perspective.

4 Archetypal voices

Our project team designed, tested and prepared for a workshop in which 4 participants represent the 4 archetypal voices in the city. Representing their Voice, they map their current situation and near future on a poster, on which the four lanes represent the Master Code of Care. Each of the voices does this on their own, at their own homes. Then the voices come together – on zoom or in person – in dialogue, using their maps to tell each other their stories. In a last round the 4 Voices can see what is happening in their city. They find each other in core themes and challenges, similarities and differences. Ideas are formed, for the near future, at an individual level as well collectively.

Workshops in Europe

The first two Integral City Lifemap workshops went very well. On September 13, Marilyn met with her group from Findhorn, Scotland, UK, on Zoom. The lady, who was representing the citizen voice said: ‘Playing the citizen has been really inspiring for me and gave me the opportunity to step from my ego-centric point of view into a the point of view of an “individual co-creator”.’ On September 16 Taina met with her group from Tampere,  Finland. She said: ‘We had a wonderful lifemap session yesterday. As follow-up we decided that Tampere 4 voices will meet again’.

The next workshops will be: on September 24 in Klaipeda, Lithuania facilitated by Rasa, and on the 27th in Lisbon, Portugal, facilitated by Patrizzia. Even after Wold Peace Day the Caravan is continuing and other people are connecting with us to do workshops on behalf of their cities.

Supported by the far-away team

While we were on our way with the project, especially at workshop times, we were supported by a far-away team – using their subtle skills to hold space for us. This has been a practice of ours in the Integral City core group, that has been really supportive for members presenting, constellating or working all-over the world.

Recording experiences

Julian, in his role as a Project Lead for the Caravan, invited us for a Facebook LiveStream recording to share the experiences on our journey with the Caravan of Unity. You will find It a recording full of inspiration and energy. You can watch it here (45 minutes).

Reflective Organ Newsletter September 2020 – Places of Unity, Peace & Partnership

This newsletter is published quarterly using a cycle of perspectives on the Integral City viewed from: Planet, People, Place and Power. The theme of this issue is Place.

Fundamentally, I consider that Placecaring and Placemaking are inextricably interlinked into a whole. But, the way that I have learned to hold that whole, is through keeping in mind what I have come to call the Master Code of the Integral City. The Master Code simply says:

Care for Yourself.

Care for Each Other.

Care for this Place.

Care for this Planet.

In this Master Code context, I am using the word “Place” to represent the city and “Planet” to represent the Planet of Cities … When we can care like this simultaneously with all 4 Voices, in all situations in the city, then we will have mastered and integrated the wholeness that is Place and the functions that enable the well-being of Gaia’s Reflective Organ.

Integral City: 11 Way Stations for Unity and Peace

How can Integral City celebrate UN Unity-Peace (UP) Week? We imagine 11 waystations that Integral City visits during the 11 days of pilgrimage with the themes from the Unity Week Caravan of Peace. Here is a brief itinerary for each day (for the full itinerary click here) …

Integral City imagines a Planet of Integral Cities connected in service to Gaia as her unified Reflective Organ System (GRO). As GRO an Integral City is in Unity with all life on the planet – acting locally, feeling globally, and thinking Kosmically.
As a Planet of Integral Cities, we imagine Interdependence with all life systems. This interdependence is fractal within individual life in cities and life in the eco-region and all life on Earth.
An Integral City exists in fractal relationship to its Environment. The environment forms the living, bio-psycho-cultural-social ecology that flows through the city, surrounds it and co-defines its structures, infrastructures and dynamics.
An Integral City depends on and only thrives when there is Economic Justice. Economic Justice can be symbolized by the goal of wellbeing for the Human Hive that regenerates sustainability and resilience.
The Integral City seeks Health for all as an outcome of co-creating the conditions for optimum wellbeing for all life. The wellbeing of the human hive arises from caring for self, others, place and planet. This is the Master Code of Care – which is the Code of Life for health, wholeness, and healing in the Integral City.
In the Integral City Children and Youth are valued as the new generation whose quality of life depends on the Master Code of Care that is translated into life conditions that support the development and emergence of the greatest human potential for each person – as well as the collectives that emerge from our relationships.
In the Integral City Women and Men play life-giving, life-sustaining and life-generating roles. They use the capacities of the feminine/masculine (consciousness) and female/male (biology) to partner each other and co-parent children and youth. Women and men bring a whole spectrum of “genderness” to learn and offer an interconnected GPS of 12 Intelligences, translating them into capacities that serve relationships in the human hive, that enable us to thrive as a living, evolutionary, integral/whole system.
The Integral City ensures the Rights of humans in all its systems are counter-balanced with human Responsibilities so that the Master Code of Care – Care for Self, Others, Place, Planet – are co-manifested and coherent. Rights never outweigh responsibilities, so that Life in all its forms can exist in a thriving interconnected ecology as the Integral City.
Freedom in the Integral City is reflected in the balancing of rights and responsibilities. To be free in the Integral City is always to be aware of the context of the Intelligences of the Human Hive. The Integral City GPS gives us sightings of freedom based on our 12 Intelligences.
In the Integral City, Disarmament starts with individuals knowing they are safe, cared for and have the freedom to realize their highest human potential without infringing on others to do the same.
An Integral City is by definition a City of Peace. A City of Peace is designed so that each individual and collective can realize its greatest human potential within the context of the Master Code of Care. A City of Peace is a City of Spirit where the involutionary and evolutionary forces flow through all scales of human life in the city so that the natural outcome is Beauty, Truth and Goodness (Map 5). As a City of Peace, an Integral City is naturally a City of Unity, connected to the Source of Life – where all human systems can Think Kosmically, Feel Globally and Act Locally – which emerges a Planet of Integral Cities of Peace able to serve Gaia as her Reflective Organs in a quantum universe.

Lifemaps Provides Route to Pandemic Lockdown Decompression

Integral City colleague, Ellen van Dongen has developed a transformation game called Lifemaps. An Integral City Team are facilitating Lifemaps experiences in 3 European locations for the Caravan of Unity and Peace that is taking as a virtual journey around Europe  (see their website with full Calendar of events – click here https://caravanofunity.eu/.)

People involved in the CCE Unity Caravan are living in cities all over Europe and beyond. This version of the Lifemaps game is for 4 participants, working with table posters and stickers. It is designed to be played in the cities where the team is located. The stickers and the game process are based upon Integral City wisdom and practices.

Integral City envisions the city as the human hive, in which people are living together, guided by the Master Code: Taking care of self, others, place and planet.

After the example of the bee hive, there are 4 archetypal voices in the city/community/county: Citizens, Civic Managers, Civil Society and Business/Innovators.

The game offers  a process to bring these 4 voices to the table, orientate themselves on the guidance of the Master Code and work together towards a common higher goal.

The participants in a workshop each represent one of the voices. For each voice a realistic map is created, visualizing the current situation as well as the (near) future. Resonating with the voice participants are representing, they tell each other the story on their maps. Connections become clear, between the invisible aspects of consciousness and culture and the visible aspects of relationships, behaviour, services and systems. Opportunities for co-creation and improvement show themselves. A dialogue follows as to how to work together in service of the goal.

Due to the current situation in the world, the games will take place respecting social distancing rules of different cities. For that reason, most of the games will be in online format. The Integral City Team includes Ellen van Dongen, Patrizzia Rocha, Rasa Kvaukaite, Julian Baller and Marilyn Hamilton.

[The Lifemaps process was featured in the Urban Hub 20: Accelerating City Change in a VUCA World – you can download a free version if you click on this blog.]

Book Review: The Future Has Other Plans

As we experience the viscissitudes of the pandemic, lockdown, tentative re-emergence and the uncertainties of our VUCA world, many of us have turned to the wild places we have access to – or more likely longed to visit. Even in earlier times, we might not have given much thought to the worldviews and strategies that govern these places of refuge and peace.  The Future Has Other Plans, describes the world of heritage management – both built and natural –  in a skilful, highly readable integral context.

This book has been dedicated to “heritage managers who sensed there was a better way to plan but weren’t sure how to get there.” However, it could be a very useful guide for other kinds of planning professionals who might count themselves in the private sector as developers or in the public sector as civic managers or city planners or as managers in civil society/third sector.

The authors McCool and Kohl have structured their book to give the reader a logical but satisfying path through the realities of both natural and cultural heritage projects. The authors use a mixed metaphor of a (Scharmer-style) U path down the left-hand side of an iceberg of challenges, shipwrecks and messy problems through the shift-point at the bottom of the iceberg U and up the right-hand side into the light of a new paradigm reframing practices toward an holistic/integrally-informed approach to planning.”

Urban Hub 21: Coming of Age – Dare to Dream

This is the 21st volume of the Integral Urban Hub series on Thriveable Cities. As such publisher, Paul van Schaik of Integral Mentors has called it Coming of Age. The Urban Hub series showcases ideas, theories, tools, stories and dreams as part of an Integral Methodological Pluralism, covering these ideas within an Integral Framework. Views from perspectives of culture, systems, consciousness, psychology & value- systems –and behaviour . Paul says, “At the start of planning this volume Covid19 followed by BLM struck and we paused to think how to proceed. Dare to Dream emerged as an appropriate framing. We know that utopias are unrealistic dreams although they may guide us to more constructive stories. Being aware that the only way to proceed is to ‘Transcend the failed narrative but to include what is good and needed in the old narrative. The future must be broader and more ‘conscious’ than the present. It must also take, as far as is possible, everyone with it. Covid19 & BLM has shown, if nothing else, that if we don’t take, by leadership and co-creation, everyone with us, improvements will never take hold and become mere wishful thinking.”

Urban Hub 20 – Accelerating City Change in a VUCA World

is the twentieth book in the series from Integral Urban Hub and IntegralMENTORS.  For this 20:20 vision of our VUCA world Marilyn Hamilton, author of the Integral City Book Series, has been inspired by the pioneer of city planning and sociology Patrick Geddes. His Outlook Tower, Camera Obscura and Summer Schools renewed old Edinburgh. We hope that the results of this highly readable and informative volume can renew and regenerate cities today. Together we have imagined how an Integral City Meshwork enables us to respond in a wholistic way to the life conditions of our VUCA world. Read about the Contents here.

Celebrating Our Cities as Places of Peace in the Coming Quarter of 2020

The city breathing in and out, And it’s rising. It’s moving everything. And it’s focusing. It’s collecting people to grow. More and more it reflects and splashes. The whole world’s peoples are helping the city be more than just a city. RBryce, PS 1, 4th grade. Poet’s House.

September 21 marks the start of what Integral City calls the Place Quarter (from September 21 to December 21 ). We have published this newsletter before this quarter officially starts, because so many events are exploding onto the horizon in early September and we wanted you to know. The Future Has Other Plans: Planning Holistically to Conserve Natural and Cultural Heritage

Book Review – by Marilyn Hamilton
Overview

The Future Has Other Plans has been dedicated to “heritage managers who sensed there was a better way to plan but weren’t sure how to get there.” However, it could be a very useful guide for other kinds of planning professionals who might count themselves in the private sector as developers or in the public sector as civic managers or city planners or as managers in civil society/third sector.

Reviewed by Marilyn Hamilton

The authors McCool and Kohl have structured their book to give the reader a logical but satisfying path through the realities of both natural and cultural heritage projects. The authors use a mixed metaphor of a (Scharmer-style) U path down the left-hand side of an iceberg of challenges, shipwrecks and messy problems through the shift-point at the bottom of the iceberg U and up the right-hand side into the light of a new paradigm reframing practices toward an holistic/integrally-informed approach to planning.

Part 1 introduces the reader to the realities that professional conservationists face as they operate under three major worldviews: Traditional, Modern and Premodern. This part should resonate not only with the experienced project leader but may horrify the less experienced heritage change agent, as the authors share their professional and life experience from natural and cultural sites around the world. Thus, their reviews of what has been, what is and what longs-to-be is well-informed, clearly described and often keenly illustrated.

Part 2 consists of four chapters, each exploring one of the integral quadrants for the benefit of:

the Manager’s Mind (Chapter 5)
the Manager’s Well-Being, Behaviour and Skills (Chapter 6)
the Collective Influences on Planning (Chapter 7)
the Institutions that Serve Heritage Sites (Chapter 8).

These are followed by Chapter 9, that summarizes the journey just completed and lays out the Holistic Planning strategy that the authors propose addresses the many barriers explored in Part 1 by applying the learnings of Chapters 5-8.

Integral City: 11 Way Stations for Unity and Peace

How can Integral City celebrate UN Unity-Peace (UP) Week? We imagine 11 waystations that Integral City visits during the 11 days of pilgrimage with the Unity Week Caravan of Peace. Here is our itinerary for each day …

1. Integral City imagines a Planet of Integral Cities connected in service to Gaia as her unified Reflective Organ System (GRO). As GRO an Integral City is in Unity with all life on the planet – Acting Locally, Feeling Globally, and Thinking Kosmically.

2.  As a Planet of Integral Cities, we imagine Interdependence with all life systems. This interdependence is fractal within individual life in cities and life in the eco-region and all life on Earth. The 4 Voices of the Human Hive resonate with the 4 roles of the Honeybee Hive. Bees have Forager/Producers; Cities have Citizens. Bees have Diversity Generators/Cities have Business/Innovators. Bees have Resource Allocators; Cities have Civic Managers. Bees have Inner Judges; Cities have 3rd Sector Integrators. Working together Bees generate Hive Mind; Humans generate Human Hive Mind.

3. An Integral City exists in fractal relationship to its Environment. The environment forms the living, bio-psycho-cultural-social ecology that flows through the city, surrounds it and co-defines its structures, infrastructures and dynamics. Integral City has 5 maps that show the interconnections with our environment (LR of Map 1); the natural holarchies of our human systems (Map 2); the interaction of the Micro, Meso, Macro scales that co-exist within the city (Map 3); the evolutionary trajectory of complex organization(s) that create communication and supply chains (Map 4); and the spiritual connections between the city and its eco-region (Map 5).

4. An Integral City depends on and only thrives when there is Economic Justice. Economic Justice can be symbolized by the goal of wellbeing for the Human Hive that regenerates sustainability and resilience. The goal of wellbeing is the human equivalent of the honey bee’s 20 kg of honey that must be produced by the hive every year for its survival. This means that in the process of generating wellbeing for the Human Hive, every person contributes to the generation and use of energy for productive means. If we want to mirror the wisdom of the bees, this sustainability strategy not only sustains the hive, but regenerates renewable energy for the next year. As each person and role is productive, we are fed and accommodated, learn on the job, gain skills and capacity and share the economy justly because hive, individuals and the eco-region are all thriving at the same time.

6. In the Integral City, as in the honeybee hive,  Children and Youth are valued as the new generation whose quality of life depends on the Master Code of Care that is translated into life conditions that support the development and emergence of the greatest human potential for each person – as well as the collectives that emerge from our relationships. Children and Youth learn the Master Code of Care because they see it modelled by all the adults and elders in their lives – serving as the 4 Voices in the Human Hive.

7. In the Integral City Women play life-giving, life-sustaining and life-generating roles. They use the capacities of the feminine (consciousness) and female (biology) to partner Men and co-parent children and youth. Women learn and offer the spectrum of 12 Intelligences and translate them into capacities in/of/as the relationships of the human system to enable the human hive to thrive as a living, evolutionary, integral/whole system.

9. Freedom in the Integral City is reflected in the balancing of rights and responsibilities. To be free in the Integral City is always to be aware of the context of the Intelligences of the Human Hive. The Integral City GPS gives us sightings of freedom based on our 12 Intelligences. Freedom aligns Context Individual, Collective, Strategic, and Evolutionary Intelligences so that Freedom rests in the wholeness of the quality of life at all levels of scale in the city. The Master Code of Care is the test that our GPS is targeted on Freedom and buoyantly aligned to our intentions of wellbeing for the Greatest Good for all life.

10. In the Integral City, Disarmament starts with individuals knowing they are safe, cared for and have the freedom to realize their highest human potential without infringing on others to do the same. With the fundamental practice of mutual, trust and respect learned from the youngest age, the need to disarm is prevented. Any armament that does exist/emerge can be used only as a minimal critical immune system to prevent being overwhelmed by an unforeseen life condition. An Integral City prefers to see its natural condition as one of health and wellbeing, where strength of mutual, trust and respect are the frameworks for civility and activity, and therefore armaments are not necessary.
