COP 26 – Cities are Gaia’s Regeneration Hubs

Humanity Rising has convened a 12-day broadcast focused on COP 26.

Integral City will anchor the COP 26 November 8, 2021 Humanity Rising broadcast with a cities theme.

Here is how our program will  unfold.

Global Regeneration Summit Day 8:Cities Are Gaia’s Regeneration Hubs

Cities are called to be Gaia’s Regeneration Hubs in the face of the world’s current Code Red life conditions. 90% of people in the developed world live in cities (more than 50% in the developing world). So,  if human impact on the world’s climate is going to change it must happen in cities. Cities need to become “Earth Re-Booters” – incubators, hubs of regeneration that transform ineffective politics into effective Schools for Regeneration across the Planet. We need city leadership for City Regeneration Hubs that restore the natural ecosystem both inside the city and in its surrounding ecoregion. Cities as Regeneration Hubs would design policies that  align a healthy inner climate of mindsets and cultures to enable the healthy outer climate of climate stability,  biodiversity, air quality and water quality.

Cities need to enable the wellbeing of every bioregion from ocean, to forest, plains, mountains, and rivers – just as they must enable wellbeing for people and all the supply chains that support city life – from energy to materials, to food to waste management. Cities as Regeneration Hubs need to engage People, Politicians and Practitioners as the 4 Voices of the Integral City – not just as Mayors and Civic Managers, but also Business/Innovators, the 3rd Sector and especially Citizens. Cities as Regeneration Hubs are living systems that need to make decisions that can serve multiple generations unto the 7th generation from now. Cities as Regeneration Hubs must serve all life on the planet by implementing circular economies so that one entity’s waste becomes another entity’s input – just like the ecology of a natural forest system. City Regeneration Hubs need Donut Economics Dashboards, so they track and restore the relationship between the Earth’s natural ecosystems (especially the 9 critical systems that we are drawing down too rapidly) and the Social Justice behaviors that emerge as we act, express, connect and co-relate with one another.

This session will bring Integral City’s GPS of City Intelligences to consider how cities can respond with conscious full-spectrum capacities and universal values to the COP26 policies and commitments that will impact cities. Holding space for Cities as Gaia’s Regeneration Hubs, we will use our lenses of the Master Code of Care for Planet, Place, People and Person to notice how contexts, capacities and collaborations can transform cities into a planetary meshwork of Gaia’s Regeneration Hubs.

Dr. Marilyn Hamilton will anchor this session. She will be joined by a panel, bringing global, regional, city and IPCC perspectives.

Participants:

Dr. Monica Sharma, initially trained as a physician and epidemiologist, and worked for the United Nations for 22 years in Leadership and Capacity Building. COP 26 – Preparing the Ground – Code Red on Humanity Rising Day 350

On Oct. 28, 2021 Humanity Rising convened the team who will anchor the 12-day broadcast on COP 26. Lead by Jim Garrison, President of Ubiquity University he shares our intentions with this map of conference broadcasts.

Humanity Rising: COP26 Humanity Rising Special Coverage: Understanding the COP

Jim Garrison opened the Humanity Rising Broadcast Gateway to COP 26 with these words:

In 1995, the first Conference of Parties (COP) was convened in Berlin by the UN as the reality of the climate crisis was beginning to dawn on the governments of the world after 40 years of warnings by climate scientists. Since that time, governments, corporations and scientists have met and discussed what should be done to avert climate disaster but have essentially taken little action. In 2015, the COP in Paris achieved a consensus that all governments would lower their carbon emissions but very little has been done. The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that we are now in “unprecedented territory,” which the UN Secretary General states means “Code Red for Humanity.” The upcoming COP in Glasgow takes place within Code Red.

Fragile Earth

Poem Heralding COP26 – by author Maggie La TourelleAbout Author  Maggie La Tourelle

Maggie is an author, designer and therapist working in London and Findhorn. In the early seventies she started having dreams about rising sea levels. This ominous precognition led to her active involvement in the Transition Towns and Communities movement that teach how to live more consciously on Planet Earth. This became a way of life that she follows to this day, and inspired my poem. https://maggielatourelle.com/

Signs of Hope at Findhorn CC

Last week when I was interviewing, futurist Anneloes Smitsman about her r3.0 Educational Transformation Blueprint, she remarked about the importance of feedback and celebrating the special moments of life in community. They are like rites of passage. That reminded me to tell her of our experience here in Findhorn Ecovillage this year.

I explained that we had had two fires that destroyed our Community Center and our Sanctuary. I shared that this was really a huge loss for the consciousness and culture of our community, as well as the infrastructure – and totally changed how we could even behave. We couldn’t cook together anymore, gather for meetings, workshops, rituals, celebrations – all those sorts of bonding community practices. Moreover, the fires left huge brownfields that reminded us of our losses every time we walked by those sites.

But over the summer months, those places have been gradually cleared. And then an invitation was issued for volunteers to work with the Park gardeners on Tuesday mornings to help re-plant and reimagine the whole area that had been the Community Centre – our beloved CC.

So, we’ve gradually watched behind the security fences, as chaos and clutter have been cleared away. The garden team decided to leave an area for some wildflowers, and an even larger central area would just become grass. They decided not to use turf – they would simply seed grass and invite Nature to grow it.

So last week, I walked by, after some time since I had been to the Community Centre site. You know, when you seed grass, for a while, it doesn’t look like anything is happening – so I had become accustomed not to see anything special there. Then, I noticed this little sign affixed to the fence. It had little baby carriages on it. And it said, “Shhh tiny baby grass is growing, and would not like to be interrupted.” I laughed out loud.

Because behind that sign, all of a sudden, I could see the entire field had sprung to green life. It was such a WOW!! It took my breath away and gave me the hugest smile. The sign and that expanse of fresh green touched me so deeply.

The little sign itself was like a way of both inviting participation in what the intention was for recovery in that area and also for cooperating with the Intelligences of Nature. When I saw that the grass had grown, and all sorts of other plants and flowers had decided to join in the celebration, you could say that Nature herself was giving us feedback. And the feedback that people had given Nature was now apparent too.

I just felt that was a great way to celebrate what had meant so much to us in that area. And it gives me huge hope and expectation of ongoing thrivability – that even though we’ve had to let go of some things that were central to our place we can be open to what else now wants to come.

So, thank you to the sign makers for capturing so much of our Findhorn Principles in one small message and one heart-centred place. I greatly appreciate the opportunities for Deep Inner Listening, Work as Love in Action and Co-creating with the Intelligences of Nature – all wrapped up in the tiny baby grass carriages.

This blog is inspired by the Interview Marilyn Hamilton had with Dr. Anneloes Smitsman.

Another excerpt is published here.

This is a description of the full interview.

Marilyn Hamilton interviews Dr. Anneloes Smitsman, visionary scientist, futurist, author, system architect and leadership catalyst about the r3.0 Educational Transformation Blueprint with 7 Transformative Learning perspectives for Regeneration and Thrivability. Together they explore how the 13 Recommendations of this Blueprint can relate to cities and collective learning processes, and how to invite the future into our learning as future ancestors for the 7th Generation.

13 Recommendations from R3.0 Blueprint for Education – How do they apply to the city?

This is another Interview from the Balcony. And today I’m just delighted to have as my guest Anneloes Smitsman. I’ve been following her work over many years and now today I have the delight of having a conversation with her. And before we get started, just let me share some of Anneloes background. It’s so impressive. Dr. Anneloes Smitsman is a visionary scientist. She’s an author, a futurist, a system architect, and a leadership catalyst for the transition into a thrival civilization. She is the founder and CEO of Earthwise Center. She holds a Master’s degree in Law and Judicial Political Sciences, and a Doctor of Sustainability. Her groundbreaking PhD dissertation into the Heart of Systems Change, addresses how to diagnose and transform key systemic barriers of our world crisis through a transition plan for thriving global civilization. Many of you may know Anneloes as the co-author of the Future Humans Trilogy with Jean Houston – this book has just been released. And maybe you’ve seen the first one, The Quest of Rose. Anneloes is also the author of the bestseller Love Letters from Mother Earth, the promise of a new beginning. She’s also written in many peer reviewed journals and chapters in books. And she is the architect of Earthwise tipping point system, the lead author of R3.0 Educational Transformation Blueprint, and has been connected with the SEEDS, constitution and new currency. I believe that Anneloes resides in Mauritius. And so with me residing in Findhorn Scotland, we’re almost halfway around the world from each other. So welcome, Anneloes, I’m so happy to have you here with us today.

Marilyn Hamilton

… What the indigenous invite us to do is to think about seven generations from now. And so I love the idea that you invite the child to imagine what city would they like to pass on to their next generation, while they’re still thinking as a child, because I think they can probably get very close to a real wellbeing and positive place – I can imagine that they would want to share that with their peers,

Anneloes Smitsman

They would want to share that – that’s right. And often [they] have not been asked, because everyone around them is so busy. And they always [just endure] when asked to do the certain task or learn in a certain way that there’s not enough space – [but] you can pool that creativity and I think that creativity is really what makes us so human – is what is the heart of our humanity that we need to keep nurturing. And that is what we come into from those processes.

Then designing for regeneration and flexibility, is also designing for these practices, designing for these questions. And designing not just for sustainability – you can’t create a good marriage with sustainability, you know?  You don’t “sustain” your marriage, or your relationships with others … You want a thriving relationship. So going further, and then initiating a nurturing – what I call the R.3.0 approaches – and that is, when we go back again, to these systemic barriers – what we see underneath these systemic barriers as a result of mechanistic archetypes is a very dualistic conception of life. And dualism in those ways. When it becomes really stifled and very tense, then it becomes also very polarized.

So we really need third way approaches for being able to address that. And that’s a big word right now. I think it relates to cities also – when there’s all these new waves of migration.  What does integration in a city mean? Some people, they may be afraid –  what does it mean? Is absorption integration? Asorption or being absorbed into our collective? that I will forget my cultural roots, my ethnicity, and my ancestors? Will I just be annihilated in this process? And so it can bring up a lot of fears and concerns.

Or does it mean: Oh, we’re going to just agree to disagree – which is not transformative, you know. We’re going to: “you stand here.” , “I stand there”. “Don’t come any closer. I’m going to co-exist so that we’re not going to call on [each other].”?????

So a third way approach is to initiate and nurture – that is first of our making, again, the tensions and polarization visible in the same way. Yes. And then really the very much integral approaches that you work with, so really for people [can] understand what’s the larger We, and where this perspective and that perspective come from? Could it be actually common roots? And what’s the kind of third principle here so that the third way emerges?

It is not an absorption; it is a new approach. It’s a new understanding. It’s a new perspective, it’s not a compromise, because a lot of people feel, “okay, I can’t win this battle. So to get out of the duality, I will just let it go. I won’t go on here anymore. I’ll just let my point of view go, then.”  No, then we haven’t come to a third way ground.

Third Way only happens when there’s truly the emergence of a new understanding – a new perspective that’s larger than what I was before.

On 9/11/01 What Did the Future Show Us? Ask Us?

On the 11th of September 2001, when three planes not only crashed but destroyed the lives of thousands of people, they also woke up the world to our profound interconnectedness. The Future that day brought both deep shadow and unexpected light.

I didn’t realize how intently the Future was calling me as I watched reality TV be invented at an unimaginable scale. I sat staring at the screen confounded by hours of replays, horror and global consternation. I imagined years and decades of disastrous fallout from this event.

I imagined economic meltdown, global depression and dis-ease everywhere. I felt the negative effects ripple out from NYC to the rest of the world. What would happen to world trade? How would fear pollute relationships? What would blame do to international agreements?

But the Future had many ideas much more powerful than my fearful contractions. Within hours of viewing the twin tours implode, I was reminded about all that I had learned about community, preparing for a disaster we had called the Y2K bug – a computer malfunction that predicted the failure of global energy systems and the dimming of lights and energy utilities worldwide.

But that disaster taught us about a key paradox embedded in the laws of complexity – that if you change 10-15% of a system, then the rest of it “changes for free”.  Along with many other technology service providers who attended to overcoming this human-made Y2K problem,  I watched 99% of the world’s lights turned on for the celebrations of the Year 2000. It turned out that so much mitigation was successfully programmed into our global technology infrastructure, that we prevented the feared outcomes.

But it wasn’t just technological upgrading that the Y2K phenomenon precipitated – it was also the capacity for being in community with one another. My work in 1999 was focused on building community with my neighbours, co-workers, businesses, health care providers, schools, city hall and justice system. Gathering emergency response resources, learning about each others’ talents and gifts, appreciating our assets and strengths. I even co-created a game (called Y2K Connections) that built community as you played it – keeping score by assembling the map of the world. It was designed so that if we were confronted by threats on a world scale, we would know how to support one another.

On the day of 9/11 the strength of those community connections overcame for me the fears and apprehensions reported on the news. The energy that was released, in fact, motivated me to bring Dr. Don Beck to Canada to teach us Spiral Dynamics integral. My work in community was recalibrated with this evolutionary developmental framework and took me from coast to coast over the next 10 years sharing the insights and training trainers.

Out of those relationships, I learned the patterns of a living, complex adaptive, Integral City and subsequently created a website and wrote 3 books. Moreover, the resilience of New Yorkers responding to 9/11 has become legendary. But because the world’s airline system was shut down that same day, it turns out the resilience of communities around the world, including Gander Newfoundland where 100’s of planes were safely landed as an emergency response system emerged from professionals cooperating around the world as a community of carers – looking after individuals, groups, places and the planet (what Integral City now calls the Master Code of Care).

The fallout from 9/11 continues to this day – and much of what the media reports looks through a glass darkly. But if you stand back to appreciate the lessons from the Future that came to the world that day, we can be grateful that we are still learning the power of caring, community and connectedness that we need to meet today’s challenges that the Future is preparing to strengthen us for tomorrow.

Long Covid? Re-Sizing, Right-Sizing, Re-Shaping Cities

Yesterday I read an article in the Economist that shows how the centres of large cities have imploded since the start of the pandemic. Businesses have shut down and/or moved out or moved their workers home.

https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/the-new-economics-of-global-cities/21804271

That has meant that the services that deliver people, goods, food, supplies and support to downtown organizations have been shattered or shuttered – perhaps not to be reopened if the workers aka customers do not return to the city core?

But in the suburbs, smaller cities and residential communities, versions of Starbucks, ready-made foods and Uber transportation are popping up like weeds along the sidewalk.

As I have contemplated the implications of this measurable trend, I am reminded of my earlier injunction that cities will be “right-sized” so that they can align with life in their bioregions.

It could be that this seemingly alarming indicator of changing life-flows in city centres will be the impetus for cities to recalibrate and reshape themselves.

On the city-scale this may become the fractal version of an oft-referenced principle of design – that “form follows function”. Let us watch how cities respond to an unexpected impact of the pandemic – perhaps the de-densification of the centre will become a city version of long covid???

Integral City Needs/Creates Global First Responders

Cities aka Human Hives need Regeneration First Responders.

More than 50% of humanity lives in cities – up to 90% in the developed world.

Cities are responsible for emitting 50% of CO2 that is now quickly warming our planet beyond the tolerance for humans and all life. Those of you who have endured the heat waves in the last year and fires and floods in cities around the world know the truth of this.

Cities can be considered the bane of existence on Earth, or we can listen to James Lovelock – author of the Gaia hypothesis that the Earth – our planet Gaia – is a living system.

Humans are an intimate part of our planetary living system. But humans have separated themselves from Nature – thinking we are somehow removed from it or even above it. This has been a tragic error in our relationship to all living systems on the planet. In other words, humans suffer from a Nature Disconnection Disorder.

It is time for humans everywhere – but especially in cities where most of us live – to heal the massive wounds we have inflicted on Nature, on our bioregions and on Gaia herself.

Regeneration First Responders in cities need to start with reconnecting each city to Nature inside the city and to our bioregions that embrace us. We need to take responsibility for the wellbeing of relationships with all living systems. It turns out that human systems are as dependent for food on the wellbeing of pollinating insects as the quality of our air and water is dependent on the living soils of our gardens, farms and fields.

Regeneration First Responders must learn how to consume a new kind of Donut explained by Kate Raworth’s Donut Economics. We must rebalance the city’s relationship to 9 key Ecological dimensions that are set out around the outside of the Donut. We must also appreciate the interconnections of all the dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals – the SDG’s – that sweeten the centre of the Donut.

This may seem like an impossible task – but our Integral City Intelligences confirm what James Lovelock says, “Humans are Gaia’s Reflective Organs”. Our cities are those Reflective Organs connected in a natural living web around the world – with living Organizations that act like our Organelles and individual humans like Cells inside our city Organs.

We need City Regeneration First Responders to Care for every aspect of our city human systems – to care for our Selves, so that we can Care for Others, so together we can Care for our City Places and altogether we can care for our Planet. You Regeneration First Responders come from all the 4 Voices of the Integral City – Citizens, Business/Innovators, Civic Managers and Civil Society or the 3rd Sector.

Now is the time for all city Voices not just to speak but to Act as a team of Regeneration First Responders . We are inviting you to join Integral City and the coalition co-creating Ubiquity U’s Master of Regenerative Action. Let us Re-Generate our city relationships with all life, bioregions and Gaia herself –  for now until 7 Generations from now. Join us for the next online Beyond Resilient Inquiry Action and Impact – we will help you design an Impact Project to regenerate your community, city and ecoregion. Join us any time on the self-guided course or our next LIVE session in September.

You can find all the details on Ubiquity University Beyond Resilient.

Integral City Reflective Organ Newsletter September Equinox 2021: Code Red for Regenerative Action

This newsletter is published quarterly using a cycle of perspectives on the Integral City viewed from: Planet, People, Place and Power. The theme of this issue is Place.

Deep Design is an all-quadrant (AQAL) process: Deep Design includes (a) research of the past geological and social history and current conditions/ situations/circumstances of the land on which delivery takes place; then (b) sensing into that history and the current subtle energetics of the land; and then (c) allowing that to both explicitly cognitively and subtle-energetically inform the design and delivery of the workshop or presentation. In particular, the current situation of the land (Mother Earth) is brought into the momentary decisions during delivery.

Code Red for Regeneration First Responders

The UN’s Code Red for climate action signalled the urgency and importance to design Regeneration into all our Integral City training.

Integral City has been working with Ubiquity University (UU) collaborators attracted by Humanity Rising 2020-21. The Code Red signal moves our teaching focus beyond human sustainability and adaptation to regeneration for all life.

From the success of our week-long Cities Rising for a Regenerative World – (which we have now made into a Free Ubiquity University Course) we have signed on to co-create a new type of MBA – a Master in Regenerative Action.

As collaborators, we support the UN’s Code Red warning to act on the scientific findings of the IPCC Report #6 released August 9, 2021.

Working with a Coalition of thirty+ global leaders in the regenerativity movement, Integral City is helping UU to retool the University and Humanity Rising to activate over 400 organizations and thousands of individuals (what we call Integral City’s 4+1 Voices) who have emerged out of Humanity Rising.

Putting into practice, the Master Code of Care, we are focusing on cohorts of GenZ and Millennial students as Regeneration First Responders globally linked together to share information and innovations for Regenerative Impact.

With our coalition partners we are developing the MRA Degree featuring an Impact Project that serves as the dissertation. An Impact Project is the application of knowledge into action demonstrating that you can apply what you are learning in the real world in a way that is regenerative to communities and ecosystems.

We are building an incubator/accelerator/investment fund as well as internships linked to the bioregions and cities to support the development of the Impact Projects.

Regeneration First Responder
As we realized the urgency for cities to upskill in regenerative competencies, we welcomed the recent Chatham House study that shows that the Gen Z/Millennial market is primed and ready for climate action, green recovery – and thus regeneration – around the world.

So, beyond the MRA we realize that our highest and most critical goal is to create the life conditions for a Global Regeneration Corps – the GRC of First Responders.

We aspire to co-create the conditions for an emerging Global Regeneration Corps in the spirit of John Kennedy’s Peace Corps in the 1960s.

For them we are co-designing a Regeneration First Responder Tool Kit that will equip learners for the rapidly changing world. Regeneration First Responders are fundamental for the viable survival, adaptation and regeneration of organizations, communities and governments. The fierce urgency of NOW calls us to create cooperative communities that care for all life and for future generations.

We are connecting with the Youth UN Peace Day 2021 Initiative, POP (Protecting Our Planet) Youth Community and AIESEC to become seed beds for incubating the GRC.

Central to the training of GRC is interior development in Soft Skills and spiritual intelligence. Regenerators need to be as resilient and adaptive in their interiors as they are active and impactful in their exteriors.

The curriculum for core and elective courses includes these Regenerative intelligences and competencies:

System Regeneration: The ability to awaken and realize the unique, value-adding potential of an organization, a place and/or an ecosystem so as to create increased levels of vitality, viability, and capacity to evolve within the larger ecosystems.Framework Thinking: The adept use and discernment of frameworks to support ordered and dynamic thinking, and the ability to act effectively within complex systems.Self-Actualized Agency: The ongoing ability to develop capacity and capability for a powerful sense of personal agency informed by a deep understanding and care for the systems in which one is living / working.Developmental Facilitation: The competency and capability required to help groups (communities and cities) evolve their sense of purpose and their ability to co-create / realize their regenerative potential together.Living Systems Intervention: The ability to enact the optimum regenerative interventions based on the integrity and wisdom of living systems in their evolutionary processes and their attuning to the larger context in which all living species exist.

We invite everyone into an exploration (and/or sponsoring) of Impact Projects for Regenerative Action and investment in the Global Regeneration Corps. You can contact us through the website info@integralcity.com and we will explore the practical learning opportunities that will regenerate our world everywhere.

It is time for all of us to mobilize regenerative action in ways that serve the wellbeing of cities/communities, bio/ecoregions and the living system of Gaia.

Gaia Regenerates Care Beyond the 7th Generation

Gaia is our Guest Editor this issue. She shares her message transmitted at the FemmeQ conference in July, 2021.

Human Hives are what MH calls cities. I like this – this fractal image captures the pattern of an ancient living system of the beehive (which has been around for 100 million years). It gives us a picture of what it looks like to see our cities as whole living systems.

Our Human Hives hold 50-90% of human population depending on which country you live in.

And they are the centres of Gaia’s Great Challenges at this stage of evolutionary emergence.

But human hives also have great potential to serve Gaia – with a Master Code of Care. Speaking with Compassionate Voices. Navigating with Maps of spiritual aliveness. Contexting, strategizing and Integrating with 12 Evolutionary Intelligences.

I invite you to appreciate the fragile strength of our human hives – holding 7 generations.

Think about the 4 generations alive today – bridging MH to her great grandson Cole … unto the generation that represents his great grandchild. That is 7 generations. It is time for humans to wake up and take the courage to create the conditions that will enable the 7th generation to live and thrive.

Because our Human Hives and all the 4 generations alive today face Big Challenges–– Energy, Water, Climate, Food, Bio-Genetic, Psycho-Cultural. All the generations past, present and future peer out of our Human Hives at 3 possible pathways into the future. Duane Elgin projects the likely outcome of these 3 possible scenarios like this:

Status Quo – where we Crash and Collapse because we do nothing, and we burn up Autocratic – where Authoritarian governance with Artificial Intelligence leads to autocratic control with humans losing most personal freedoms Choosing Earth – where we Self-Organize through The Great Transition . He imagines that after an extended period of struggle (spoken to by Lynne Twist’s prophecies ), local and regional system change frees personal agency for a whole new era of aliveness and unity.

Where and How will humans find the Courage to Choose Earth?

Gaia Mentors Schooling for a Planet of Integral Cities 2121

Futures Lab Russia, July 2021, invited Integral City to imagine cities in 100 years. This extract from the lecture was offered by Marilyn Hamilton PhD, Founder of Integral Cities. Links to the whole series follow below.

===

I am energized and excited by the picture Gaia paints of the future of cities in 100 years. But how do we evolve our cities from 2021 to 2121? Can we backcast to see how we could develop a strategy to realize what you imagine?

Cities are Alive

Gaia: I want to inspire my intention in you. I have some … wisdom to share.

I am so grateful that James Lovelock recognized that as a planet I, Gaia, am a living system. Not only am I alive, but I am the creator of all life on this planet – and I long to have a conversation with the most complex species I have evolved to date – humans.

I want to share with you some of the ideas and design frameworks I have evolved, and how I am still in the process of evolving living, evolutionary organs for my Earth body. I have been busy creating forest organs for breathing, riparian organs for cleansing my wastes, heart organs from the savannahs of Africa, circulatory organs from my rivers and lakes and homeostasis organs from my great oceans. Now I long for a system of Reflective Organs that allow me to express my consciousness and intelligent culture. I have imagined these organs to be Integral Cities.  When I imagine a Planet of Integral Cities coming into existence, I will have a whole Reflective Organ system (like Map 4), with organelles formed from organizations and cells from you individual humans.

As a planet I have been around for 4 billion years and have ancestors in the universe who have shared with me universal design patterns that I put to good use.  For instance, Cities are Complex Adaptive Living Human Systems. As such they are extensions of the living organisms that form you humans as individuals and collectives. Like all living systems I have created, cities demonstrate 3 behaviors: They

SurviveAdapt/connect with environmentRegenerate Cities Evolve

As living organisms cities have the potential to develop through characteristic (archetypal and fractal) lifecycle stages of most living systems:

child, youth, adult, elder

Each of these stages has the potential to mature in ways that expand the worldviews – and centres of care – of your individual consciousness and the culture that contains it:

Ego, Ethno, Regional, Global (Your languages describe these as I, You/We, It, Its.)

In turn each of your worldviews can be related to a potential stage of maturity in engaging with the world – that I name as:

Waking, Growing, Cleansing/Healing, Wholing

Elisabet Sahtouris, the evolution biologist who has explored so much about the living system contained in cells and microbiology, wisely recognizes that humans are a very young species. (By comparison to the honeybees that you study for insights through biomimicry – honeybees are 100 million years old). Your species is maybe a million  years old if we stretch it.

Elisabet says, as a young species, you have been and are naturally conflicted and very competitive. This is very typical of the child and youth stages of most species. This  youthful stage of your species – with all its conflicts and competition is what has brought you to the circumstances that you experience in the world today. In your youth you tend to see the world through a I/It lenses and challenge life with a competitive attitude.

My first mentoring insight for you is that unless you can mature and outlive this stage to embrace a wider circle of care, and become cooperative and collaborative, your species may not mature into the organs I Gaia so greatly desire.

Mini Book Review: The Politics of Waking Up – Power and Possibility in the Fractal Age

This brilliant book by Indra Adnan, is exactly the antidote for those who despair of ever making a difference in the usual politics of our world. It resonates with a new language of relationships in this time when we are called to revitalize our communities – Indra calls it the fractal age. Those who see the patterns of ” I-We-World, cooperation, collaboration, stories, maps and feminine intelligence” will recognize themselves in the pages.

Indra tells a personal story of a journey seeking the evidence for natural archetypal patterns and how she interprets them in deeply wholistic ways. This book has an “edginess” to the whole exploration of politics and the clear daring that she and Pat Kane set out when they co-created Alternative UK with three strategies: co-create a new media; network networks; nurture CAN’s.

The book’s exploration of fractals gives us whole new lenses to look at the world and see possibilities instead of despair. I am inspired by her multi-cultural personal journeys, commitment to service in every stage of her career – and her vulnerability and curiosity about how she can make a difference. This book shows us all that each of us as individuals belongs to a new collective that can make a difference for a world who desperately needs to regenerate in this fractal age.

I found this book a page-turning read to even move beyond Waking Up – into Growing Up power and possiblity for the work that calls Integral City into reinventing communities and cities. This book builds a bridge through/to the evolutionary impulse that connects our work.

“This is a truly brilliant and much needed presentation.  The author has brought together an extremely intelligent group of writers and thinkers to apply Integral principles to the problems and creative openings of city, regions, ecosystems, and the biosphere itself.  Each one of these areas is treated as a living, complex, integral system, and the ways that they all mutually interact are fully explored, with the added benefit that they are all looked through an integral lens, insuring that a fully whole and complete path is taken.  There is really no other approach like this available, and certainly none that give as full and comprehensive and inclusive an account.  I can’t recommend this approach more highly, it truly touches a level of genius.”   Ken Wilber—Sex, Ecology, Spirituality; The Integral Vision

Celebrating Our Cities as Regenerative Places in the Coming Quarter of 2021

Collectively it is time to do our utmost to ensure that people, especially youth, can  contribute to the regeneration of nature without compromising their ability to earn a living.  Ryah Chandler, Founder, Wise Generation.

September 21 marks the start of what Integral City calls the Place Quarter (from September 21 to December 21 ). We have published this newsletter early so that we can share all the opportunities that explore, enable and equip us for regeneration. We are curious about how you might respond to the searching questions of our younger generations: What tangible job prospects will be made available to them? Will these roles provide them with a competitive and reliable income? Can we establish key relationships with future employers who commit to hiring graduates – providing security for those who are bold enough to be early participants?

What motivates you to respond to Code Red and regenerate our beautiful planet for the wellbeing of all life? Where do we find the energy and resources to build bridges to the evolutionary leap into cooperation and collaboration?  Visit us on our Integral City Website and Blog or post a comment about your city interests on our Mighty Network.

**Reflective Organ Newsletter September Equinox 2021: Code Red for Regenerative Action

He imagines that after an extended period of struggle (spoken to by Lynne Twist’s prophecies on Tuesday), local and regional system change frees personal agency for a whole new era of aliveness and unity.

===

I am energized and excited by the picture Gaia paints of the future of cities in 100 years. But how do we evolve our cities from 2021 to 2121? Can we backcast to see how we could develop a strategy to realize what you imagine?

Cities are Alive

Gaia: It is my intention I want to inspire in you. I have some more wisdom to share.

Integral City Beyond Resilient, 2021 Cohort 2

Integral City is proud to continue our partnership with Ubiquity University to deliver our flagship course Beyond Resilient: Integral City Inquiry, Action, Impact. (BR).

This course – delivered online starting ***September 15 to December 1, 2021*** , is for Catalysts who seek new ways:

to work with multiple groups and organizations to engage inquiry and action for reinventing today’s cities for the future.to interact in-depth with the 4+1 Voices of the Integral City to prototype strategic possibilities.to learn new solutions, tools and guiding principles to enable the emergence of sustainability and resilience for the future of cities now.to discover the unique contributions that you make to the aliveness of the Human Hive.

Beyond Resilient (delivered online) enables Practitioners, Catalysts and Meshworkers to build capacitating scaffolds so that cities work for everyone. Participants grow their leadership to serve the city to thrive within the Master Code of Care: Caring for Self, Others, Place, Planet.

This course explores the city as the Human Hive and co-creates the conditions for you to catalyze and explore all the Voices who inhabit your spheres of influence – including family, neighbourhood, workplaces, recreation zones, communities, city, and eco-regions.

You will have the opportunity to experiment with new designs for the challenges you face in your city environments. And you will gain experience with a set of five maps and an evolutionary compass to discover new solutions to the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) problems that plague the cities of today. You will leave the course with new tools and a set of guiding principles we call the Master Code of Care to enable the emergence of sustainability, resilience and regeneration for the future of cities now.

This link to the Integral City books and builds a bridge through/to the evolutionary impulse that connects our work.
