Mind Sieve 10/7/13

Morning!

Fan Fun
I, Frankenstein Official Trailer 2014 - Oooo, were-gargoyles! This looks fun!

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit trailer 1 - Hmm could be good!

Frankenstein - I heard about this at a panel on Sherlock Holmes at Fencon and had to go looking. This sounds so freaking awesome!
And it's coming to the US through Fandango! To the Angelika Plano and Dallas in OCT/NOV 2013!!!! SQUEE!!! (Thank you for mentioning this today Melanie!) Got my tickets!!!!
In case you're wondering what the heck I am talking about... Sherlock Holmes from Elementary (Johnny Lee Miller) and Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) have done a stage version of Frankenstein where they each play the doctor and monster and SWITCH who plays who each night! And both have totally different interpretations. And BOTH will be playing at the Angelika on different days. This is going to be EPIC!
SQUEE!

And insanely running around the internet to get this info and SQUEE - freak out - and check time conflicts - and check the dates for the Plano vs Dallas - and realizing I can make it - and manically calling hubby -

Yeah, the rest of the time to do the blog post went out the window.

Why, no, I am not excited by this AT ALL! Hah!

Virtual Tourist - Star Wars The Old Republic 10/6/13

Morning all!
Still off at Fencon having a ball. Hope you are too!

Star Wars The Old Republic
Jedi Consular
Makeb

Nice little fountain in Talaos. Ignore the cowering politician, he'll only ruin the view. :P

Isn't that just a cool sky?

Flags warning of important building ahead!

Nice little bush molding.

A lot of bling inside the important building. :)

Robotic security. Some nice little programming and they believe us when we tell them to ignore all sounds of gunfire as it is only a drill. Bwahahahaha!

Man some Hutts really do like to use Carbonite figures in all their decorating! Heh heh

Funky lighting. Almost seemed to have substance.

Closer look at the Carbonite Decor.

Rather imperious looking, no?

Nice art!

Aha! That same statue from the gazebo. Hoping this one gives you a better look. (You'll have to click for the bigger pic)

Nice place. The Doc has him a cool hat now. Heh heh

More cool skies!

Have a GREAT DAY!

Movie Review - Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2

Starring: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Will Forte, Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Terry Crews, Kristen Schaal, Cody Cameron, and more.

Directed by: Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn Screenplay by: John Francis Daley, Jonathan M Goldstein, and Erica Rivinoja Story by: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Erica Rivinoja Characters by: Judi Barrett and Ron Barett Original Music by: Mark Mothersbaugh

Premise: Six months after Flint and his friends stopped the food chaos at Chewandswallow from the FLDSMDFR, Flint is asked to go back to the island by his childhood hero, Chester V. The scientist tells him Flint that the FLDSMDFR wasn't destroyed as Flint thought, but has remained active and is now creating not food, but evil food creatures. Creatures that are learning and will soon leave the island and threaten the rest of the world - unless Flint goes back and stops them. (Rated PG)

Review:

1) Voice Acting - Total Thumbs Up: All the beloved characters and most of the original voice actors are back in this sequel to the 2009 film. Bill Hader as the naive yet well meaning Flint carried us through the eager scientist's travails. Anna Faris was perky and still a force to be reckoned with. Neal Patrick Harris is way too much fun as Steve. Benjamin Bratt delivers all of Manny's great one liners with aplomb and to great effect. Will Forte moves from his smaller role in the first film to the main villain of the piece as Chester V - a great choice as he gives Chester just the right touch of believability and guile.

2)  Artwork/Animation - Total Thumbs Up: The artwork and animation department of Sony Pictures Animation did an outstanding job with this film. The mainland, the HQ for LIVE, and the drastically altered island of Chewandswallow were amazing places to behold.

LIVE was slick. All the tech was slick. Even the company helicopter blades had a flare all their own. The actual working environment was an ordered sea of stale cubicles, while the elite worked on their science way above the others. With Flint's 'seat of the pants' science, the two appear almost polar opposites.

The island in turn was like stepping into an alien world. A familiar place changed and turned stranger because of the familiarity. The concept of the foodimals made for amazing visuals. It took common things we've seen all our lives, yet now displayed them in a totally new way to make something fresh and different. I think my favorites were the owls. Though the cheesespiders were a close second. The cucumber people were too cute.

I also loved the primeval yet technological look of the FLDSMDFR's resting area. It had a great emotional feel to it - science and nature joined together.

3) Story - Thumbs Up: Lately, there's been a weird trend to make the protagonist's hero into the bad guy of the story. I've seen it at least three times in animated films this year. It's a little worrying that everyone keeps telling children that all their hero's are bad.

Putting that aside, I enjoyed all the different levels pursued in the story. Some elements from the first film were brought up again, as Flint and his father still have a few issues to get past in understanding one another. (It's been a while since I saw the first film, so a comparison is difficult.)

New elements in the sequel included showing healthy interpersonal relationships versus those that are one sided.  And not just those the second person clings to because they don't truly realize the real state of the relationship, but also those they have with themselves.

The ying and yang of Flint and Sam is also reflected on. Flint might be a genius, but it is Sam who is wise.

Conclusion: "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" is a fun, visual feast. The kids will have plenty to keep them entertained, dazzled by the awesome imagination of the animators and writers. For the adults, there are a ton of jokes, which mixed visuals with wordplay - a few are even quite nostalgic.

Make sure to sit through most of the credits - the animators had a little fun with different styles there on some of the added bits.

Rating: 4 out of 5 (Hubby's Rating: Worth Full Price to See Again)

Virtual Tourist - Star Wars The Old Republic 9/29/13

Good morning, all!
Did finally figure out why SWTOR didn't take pics last time. As usual, it was user error. :P

Star Wars The Old Republic
Jedi Consular
Planet Makeb

Makeb has the most Earthlike skies. I also love the floating fruit from the trees.
The planet is becoming unstable. This is a cave in after the first large quake.
More quake damage
Some lovely unique architecture here too.

Got lucky on one of the packs I bought from the cartel with the monthly stipend for subscribers and got this beautiful skirt. You can see all the lovely detail from this pic

Recent earthquake damage. This planet has been mined out by the Hutt Cartel and is doomed.

Broken pipes, cracked roads, and this is only the beginning.

City of Talaos. Loved this gazebo!

A Talaos Police vehicle. Sirens and everything. lol.

Have a great day!

Movie Review - Austenland

Austenland

Starring: Keri Russell, JJ Feild, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie, Georgia King, James Callis, Jane Seymour, Ricky Whittle, Ayda Field, and more.

Directed by: Jerusha Hess Screenplay by: Jerusha Hess and Shannon Hale Based on the Novel by: Shannon Hale Cinematography by: Larry Smith Original Music by: Ilan Eshkeri

Premise: Obsessed with all things 'Jane Austin' and so far having little luck with love, Jane Hayes takes a risk and spends all of her savings on a trip to Austenland - a Regency Era themed getaway. Yet from the moment she arrives, matters don't exactly go in the direction she'd hoped. (Rated PG-13)

Review:

1) Acting - Total Thumbs Up: Keri Russell is just too adorable. You feel her excitement as she finally ventures to her dreamland, but also feel her rising disenchantment for what she's been inadvertently thrust into. JJ Feild as Mr. Nobley and inadvertent recreation of Mr. Darcy was a lot of fun to watch. Especially as his awareness of Jane grows, as her true persona begins to seep through the cracks. Jennifer Coolidge played being sweet, clueless, and driven with her usual aplomb. Most of the comedic moments come from her character's utter cluelessness of things English. James Callis playing the actor playing Colonel Andrews at "Austenland" was so very good at being bad.

2) Plot/Story - Total Thumbs Up: Most times we don't expect much from romantic comedies, so it was a nice surprise to actually have a couple of unexpected twists in the plot on this one. Even more fun were the layered issues in the film, most of which mirrored the same themes Jane Austen used in her famous novels.

While being even minimally acquainted with Austen or her novels is not a requirement to enjoy the film, I believe those who have at least some degree of knowledge in the area will get more joy out of "Austenland" than those who don't. Seeing all the correlations with Austen's works in the plot will increase the depth of entire story for them. There are many themes in the film which get used in her books - hypocrisy, judging others merely on what is seen on the surface, the strict roles expected of men and women, how those with money and influence are perceived as better than others, how perception is everything, and a few more.

For those who don't know Austen but know things about the British, there'll be plenty of jokes for them to be amused by. Most notably will be the character of Miss Charming, who uses accents of the lower classes and butchers standard British phrases while pretending to be a Regency Era rich socialite.

3) Locations/Cinematography - Total Thumbs Up: From the obsessive fan's bedroom to the gorgeous lands of West Wycombe, great attention to detail and mood went into the setup of locations and spanning shots. West Wycombe was a great place for conveying the look and feel of the Regency Era.

Even the sets for the mock play screamed of authenticity. It made a great backdrop to the fantasy versus the reality being played by those visiting there. There was also a lovely and telling contrast when we're shown the area where the actors and others who work at Austenland go to seek a little respite from being in 'character'.

4) Costuming/Makeup - Total Thumbs Up: The costuming department did an excellent job outfitting everyone with their different costumes, even the markedly different wear and hairstyles depending on your class and status. Intentional or not, I found much humor in Jane's first hairstyle and dress as it made her look a lot like a younger Sarah O'Brien from "Downton Abbey". Mr. Nobley was made for the wearing of Regency Era men's attire.

Conclusion: "Austenland" was a definite treat. The more knowledge on Britain or Jane Austen you have, the more you will enjoy the film. Make sure to stay through the end credits as there's a bonus bit for the audience that was a lot of fun. (And an interesting tidbit - Stephenie Meyer (author of Twilight) was a producer for the film.)

Rating: 4 out of 5 (Hubby's Rating: Worth Full Price of Admission)

Virtual Tourist - Angry Birds Star Wars and Neverwinter 9/22/13

Fall has Arrived!
Hopefully it will temper down the heat here but not get cold yet. :P

Played Star Wars, which hadn't happened in a bit, and none of the pics actually saved. Wahhhh. A setting must have changed somewhere. Darn...

Angry Birds Star Wars
Cloud City

Some of these puzzles are insane! Mind you, you have to use the air to get bounced around at times.

Crazy!

This one gave me fits, but was also fun. You could take pieces of the poles out of the two stormtroopers shooting and they'd turn. Heh heh.

Neverwinter

New mount that's available. Unicorn! And it has fairies of light that dance around it. Squee!

Lovely floral arrangement. And hubby's sidekick trying to hog the lens as usual.

Great colors and clothes on these elves.

Off to a monastery area which is having some major issues at the moment.

Awesome gate.

Some huge statuary

Love these clouds!

Monastery is by a poor area. The people here are being used for experiments and threatened with deadly disease if they try to leave. Nasty!

This is what happens when I try to take a pic when combat suddenly ensues. lol.

Ming the Merciless, anyone?

This is messed up! Look how the super think walls are all akimbo. The land of Neverwinter really suffered from the quake.

Once more into the super roomy underground we go!

Miss Experiment with the Poor herself. :P Ugh!

Back into calmer areas. Though the glowing ground was interesting!

That's it for today. Have an awesome Sunday!
