Virtual Tourist - Skyrim 9/6/15

We didn't get to go to Animefest this year. We only made it as far as the Emergency Waiting List.
But on the bright side, I won't be working on the holiday! Yay! This will be about the 3rd time in 13 years or so we've not made it?

Skyrim
Riften

The Temple of Mara. The blessing of the goddess removed my developing vampirism! YAY! Cracked me up that when I talked to the priestess, she spoke of working up to become worthy of getting a blessing, yet the goddess already gave it to me. Heh heh heh

One of the other Gods of the city. The Imperium is trying to ban all the old gods.

Lizard woman! This particular lady is quite morose. huh.

Chain of tunnels beneath the city. Will eventually lead to the Thieves Guild's hang out.

An unexpectedly beautiful spot in the rat tunnels.

The Ragged Flagon - not a friendly place. But there is a woman here who for a chunk of cash will reshape your face. Also a stealth teacher. And where you'll need to go once they decide to test you for entry into the Thieves Guild. :)

A dark elf and a super ugly goat. Ack!

Within Riften, through the brewery, you can get to another map area for the docks and the fishery. Love the viking boat!

All that mist!

Super ugly fish hanging inside the fishery. Ugh

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!!!

Movie Review - The Transporter Refueled

The Transporter Refueled

Starring: Ed Skrein, Ray Stevenson, Loan Chabanol, Gabriella Wright, Tatiana Pajkovic, Wenxia Yu, Radivoje Bukvic, Noémi Lenoir, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Lenn Kudrjawizki, Samir Guesmi, and more.

Directed by: Camille Delamarre Written by: Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, and Luc Besson Based on Characters Created by: Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen Cinematography by: Christophe Collette Music by: Alexandre Azaria Stunt Coordinator: Laurent Demianoff Fight Choreographer: Alain Figlarz Car Stunt Coordinator: Michel Julienne

Premise: Hoping to spend some time with his newly retired father, Frank's plans take a detour after he ends up taking an impromptu job. Matters turn for the worse when he finds out his new client has decided she wants insurance, and kidnaps his father as leverage. The three rules no longer apply. (Rated PG-13)

Review:

1) Acting - Total Thumbs Up: Not as meaty as Statham, Ed Skrein still has the scruffy look and the attitude we've come to associate so well with regards to the Transporter movie franchise. Chris Vance is a more devonaire Transporter (from the TV series) - so Skrein fits neatly somewhere between the two. It's been fun watching their different interpretations of the same character.

Ray Stevenson was quite entertaining as Frank's father. He had way too much fun in the film - almost like he'd gone on holiday. Lol. Loan Chabanol had great chemistry with Skrein and the camera. Throughout the film you could see her admiration of the man she's hired and coerced grow. Lovely side glances from her.

2) Special Effects - Total Thumbs Up: What do we go see Transporter films for? The car chases, the hand-to-hand combat, the gun play, and if we're lucky, explosions! The film hit high marks on all these and more.

My favorite special effect had to be the driving maneuver that involved four different fire hydrants. A truly innovative move and with a touch of CGI and camera play it looked awesome. The way Frank disposes of one of his cars and then the trigger device made for some neat fireworks. The gun battle on the boat and all the exploding bullet damage was surreal.

3) Plot/Story - Neutral: Several people involved with the film have also been involved with some of the other films and even TV episodes. So the beginning scene is a familiar one for the Transporter franchise. There's always someone wanting to mess with Frank or his car in the parking garage. They never learn, but does make for a great mood setter.

There are a lot of other signature moments here and there in the film, so there's a lot of fun to be had by fans. And while no one expects this type of film to be highbrow, it was a little odd how on some things the writing was very bad, while on other things it was good.

So this will be one of those films to go see for the visuals, and leaving the little grey cells at home.

The first mistake has to do with the job itself. Even though the bad guy knew Frank in his army days, it seems odd he'd know Frank had become the Transporter, especially as Frank keeps his identity as secret as possible. And from the bad blood between them, I doubt Frank would have ever taken a job from them man or told him about his post army work.

The second would be the timing. From the girls you get the feeling they've been working up to this plan for years. But even assuming she knew who the Transporter was, there's no way Anna would have known anything about his father and when he was retiring/visiting early enough to incorporate him into her plan in this manner.

The third was making such determined ladies, who want nothing more than to leave the life, suddenly throwing themselves all over both Franks. It somewhat belittled all the trouble and the gazillion risks they'd been taking to put this plan together.

There's more booboos, but I will leave those to you to find. :) (Or to ignore. heh heh)

4) Stunts - Total Thumbs Up: The stunt department worked their buns off! Lots of car chases with a ton of imaginative car flips and crashes. You'll find yourself cringing at some of these, they look so nasty! Flips, flops, head on collisions, they've got it all!

Then we get into the hand-to-hand combat! Some quick camera moves here and there, but otherwise it's all right there for us to see. And Frank uses the tools he knows best - his car, his fists, and sticks. I utterly adored the fight down a small corridor with a wall of drawers on both sides. Talk about close quarters! And ingenuity too!

Big kudos to the stuntmen themselves as we see several motorcycle wipeouts and men skidding across the streets and into tables. They make it look so easy! :P

5) Locations/Cinematography - Total Thumbs Up: Shot in France, we get lots of gorgeous shots of Nice and Paris. Nice truly looks like an amazing place to visit for sure. :)

Conclusion: While keeping to the high standards of driving, stunt work, and hand-to-hand we've become accustomed to in the Transporter Movies and TV series, the plot could have used a little help. But if you ignore those bits, you're in for a fun and action packed ride.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (Hubby's Rating: Worth Full Price of Admission)

Virtual Tourist - Skyrim 8/30/15

Happy Sunday!

Skyrim
Ivarsread - tombs

Ivasread is a super small town - 3 buildings! But they live right next to a tomb/crypt system. This table with embalming tools is on the top floor.

An amazingly fancy and still very shiny door

Does not inspire confidence, does it?

The man aka "ghost" responsible for all the recent fear in town. He invented a potion that made him appear insubstantial. From his journal, he's been slowly losing his mind here for the last 6 months searching for a ruby claw. (I didn't find it either before bad luck happened to me....)

Fancier set of doors - when opened shooting flames of fire came out! If I'd been in a hurry, I would have been barbequed! (You can see some of the fire in the pic!)

Where the flames came from. Nasty! Whole place had trap zones. Eek!

A carved mural in the main crypt room

A second one. Rather detailed, no?
Riften

I made the mistake of trying to pick a lock in the 3 building town...Got grabbed and sent to who knows where for the second time. Argh! Peeps currently in power.

Is that or is that not the most angry (and weird looking) walrus ever?

Loved the stone covered walkway

First look at the town proper. Below is another level with docks in the water. So this part of the city would be considered elevated?
May your day be full of awesomeness!

Movie Review - Shaun the Sheep Movie

Shaun the Sheep Movie

Starring: Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Omid Djalili, Richard Webber, Kate Harbour, Tim Hands, Andy Nyman, Simon Greenall, Emma Tate, Jack Paulson, Sean Connolly, Nick Park, and more.

Directed by: Mark Burton and Richard Starzak Written by: Mark Burton and Richard Starzak Based on Characters Created by: Nick Park Cinematography by: Charles Copping and Dave Alex Riddett Music by: Ilan Eshkeri

Premise: Bored with the daily grind at the farm, Shaun decides that what they need is a day off. In order to get it, he orchestrates an elaborate plan to distract Bitzer, the dog, and lull the Farmer back to sleep. At first going off without a hitch, things soon go in unexpected directions, especially when the small trailer they put the Farmer in suddenly rolls off down the road towards the Big City. (Rated PG)

Review:

1) Voice Acting - Total Thumbs Up: If any of you have seen the movie, you may be raising your brows at this point. Yes, no coherent words are spoken in the film except for one or two, but the meanings of what they are saying is implied, which means Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Omid Djalili, and the rest had to rely on inflection on nonsensical murmurings to make themselves understood. And they did a beautiful job of it. Because these are animated sheep, not everything could be conveyed from just their expressions, so the voice actors had to work at getting the moods and feelings across and they did it very well.

2) Artwork/Animation - Total Thumbs Up: Aardman Studios has been making stop motion animated films for many years. They also use many other techniques to get their stories across aside from stop motion animation - though that's where they started back in the 90's. You've probably seen their work and never realized it. Though their roots are in England, they've done work for groups all over the world.

Their stop animation work is lovely. The main art style they use for these is very apt for the medium. Lots of great detail and smooth motion. The visual gags run really well, and keep an eye on the backgrounds for subtle jokes - like the sign for Big City saying "Big City" in several languages as if it was an actual name. Or the one saying "Convenient Quarry."

The first sequence when the film begins is priceless. The happy days and the drudgery now felt by all is evident and humorous.

Using pop culture references in different, imaginative contexts served them very well. The whole sequence at the Animal Containment Center even borrowed bits from Silence of the Lambs. (How could they resist? It's a sheep movie! Ewe?) That section alone was full of prison movie references as well. Great job.

3) Plot/Story - Thumbs Up: Shaun the Sheep comes from a well beloved series on British Television. (You can actually see episodes of it on Amazon Video and other show carriers.) It's mainly a kids' show, but one with enough 'meat' that it is still entertaining enough for adults to enjoy.

The film takes us back to the beginning - so it's a prequel of sorts. The topics covered are actually rather deep - living only to work, losing sight of what's important and who you love, taking things for granted, realizing that actions have consequences - and most importantly that there's no place like home. Yet these topics are presented in such a way that kids may not entirely realize what they're being shown (not to where they realize the true darkness they harken) but the adults definitely will.

There pace is brisk, so the kiddos are well entertained. The adults will have fun with the phenomenon of Mr. X and also the Animal Containment Center's A. Trumper. He's a hoot.

The humor seemed somewhat more spartan than usual in this particular film. A bit more would have raised the overall enjoyment.

It is a film for kids, so there so expect plenty of fart jokes. :) Shaun's inventiveness at a couple of spots were totally amusing.

Conclusion: Shaun the Sheep Movie is a nice compliment to those already acquainted with the series and characters. For those not acquainted with them, it's a rather nice introduction. Deep subjects for the adults, fun for the kids, but it was a little light on the humor. Still, a nice enjoyable bit of animation.

Rating: 3.25 out of 5 (Hubby's Rating: Better for Matinee)

The Sun King by Christian Spencer at Earthshots.org - the timing on this had to be incredible! For the hummingbird to be at the right angle and position? Dang... That's really working for a shot. His is full of other nice shots. He's got paintings, music, and film as well. Very busy!

The Outbreak by Artur Stanisz at Earthshots.org - love the title. Plenty of vamps who would think of it as an outbreak. heh heh.

Hidden Underworld by Artur Stanisz - lots of mountains and other lovely shots at his site. (I'm liking these long pics and I then have room to can make them bigger for the post!) :) He also does Photo Adventures

I had to share this. My daughter made it over the weekend. Isn't it cool?

Virtual Tourist - Skyrim 8/23/15

Morning all!

Skyrim
Sweeping beneath the mountain toward the Monastery
Still making my way towards Ivargread

A cold but beautiful night

Wolves are a coming

Seems spiders roam outside of caves as well. DOH

I saw the Sign! Finally on a road going where I need to. lol

Thanks to a camp of Legionnaires, I was able to spruce up the quality of the vampire armor enough to make it worthwhile to wear.

Looks pretty good on me, no? (Though I think I inadvertently sold my helmet. lol)This camp is also where I found that places like these don't mark property as being 'stolen' - so weird.

Ivargread - finally! Though that's when I got the weird message as the sun set...I'm getting very thirsty. Dang it! I think I've caught vampire cooties. Need to remember to see if I have a cure disease potion...
Hope you have a super restful day!
