Rally Against Racism, Dublin, February 2 2017

I hadn’t planned on going to a political rally last night. In fact, I’d had specific other plans–there’s a local SF book club that I’m trying to attend in, y’know, an attempt to socialize myself better–but god damn it, this is it, people. These are the days that, in history class, we would say, “Well, if *I* had been alive in the 30s, *I* would have…”

This moment, what you’re doing now, that’s what you’d have been doing then, because our Right Now is the path they were on eighty years ago. A...

PT #4

Today’s PT session taught me that my calves are the only part of my body not made entirely of knots. PT went after my calves and after she’d done one and was working on the other I was like “Either you’re going a lot easier on my calves than the rest of me, or they’re just not knotted.” She said, “I’m actually using exactly the same pressure!” and thus I deduced my calves are not made entirely of knots.

The rest of me, though, Jesus. My right shoulder’s been really hurting, so she went after...

counting the words

I’m sure you’ll all be surprised to hear I didn’t manage 5K a day for the entirety of January. I did about 70K, which is quite good, if not my Best Month Ever. ROSES IN AMBER has gone through copy edits and I’ll be putting those in on Friday (tomorrow is a rest day) and hopefully it’ll drop early next week.

I finished another revision pass on REDEEMER, which I think involved writing about 3-5K but only netted me 1K on the book. It has one more pass to go, then back to the editor.

This month...

omg chance painting!!!!

I got a package in the mail today from Leah Moore, for whom I drew a silly little comic recently (which I’ll be posting soon, in fact!). It contained a watercolor sketchbook and a dip pen and ink and I thought AW YOU DARLING! and said AW YOU DARLING! to her on Twitter.

“Have you looked inside the sketchbook yet?” she asked.

“NO!” I said, “LET ME GO DO THAT RIGHT NOW!”

“I’ll wait,” sez she, and I ran downstairs to open the sketchbook and inside was THIS!

chance-by-al

OMFG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG *INCOHERENT S...

Women’s March: Dublin

This will be a long picture-heavy post, so I’m going to open it with a fresh link to my IT’S A REBELLION: I REBEL t-shirt at Zazzle. I don’t actually know if they’ll let me keep it up and if they don’t I won’t put it up again, so get it now while the getting is good.

I went to the Dublin arm of the International Women’s March on Washington last Saturday. There were 2-3000 people marching here, which thrills me (although honestly, it doesn’t make me as happy as the 2000 people who turned out i...

PT Session #2

I went to see the PT again yesterday. I was mentally geared up for another murder session like the first one, and, y’know, she worked me over really well. Softened me up, and then went to really start the heavy duty work on my shoulders and…

There’s an Impossible Knot in my left trapezius, which she’d loosened up last time by going through my armpit. (Oh god the pain, but it was amazing.) Anyway, so she went after the knot yesterday without going through my armpit first, and I mean, she’s, li...

a splendid day, with pokemon :)

Indy and I had a splendid day today.

We stopped at the local Pokemon gym and claimed it on the way home from school, and walked enough candies to evolve our Abra into a Kadabra, which was pretty darn exciting. He did his chores and homework cooperatively, and we went through ALL our Pokemon and found our Grimer only needed ONE CANDY to evolve. So we went for a bike ride/Pokehunt. He’s learning to ride his bike, and there’s a nice little housing estate next door that has a big loop perfect for...

January 16, 2017

I accidentally wrote a book.

I started a novella on January 1. It was gonna be a quick & dirty little retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and it was gonna be 25-30K and written in a week, and I was gonna slap a cheapie cover on it and fling it up onto the interwebs in a Surprise Novella Drop!

When, at the end of a week’s writing and 23.5 thousand words, I had only just gotten to the Beast, it was pretty clear that this was not going to be a novella, and that in fact it had gotten entirely out of hand and maybe it would be...

Picoreview: La La Land

Picoreview: La La Land: either too much reality or too much fantasy, but either way, a total failure to succeed.

La La Land is billed as “the kind of movie Hollywood doesn’t make anymore.” This is not accurate. This is the kind of movie Hollywood never made. It is not a slick, charming Hollywood movie musical. Neither is it a Hollywood style dreams-meet-reality drama. It attempts to be both, and succeeds at neither.

I’m not much of a Ryan Gosling fan. I understand he’s apparently an extremely...

January 10, 2017

oh, is it 2017?

I see I’ve managed to get ten days into the new year without posting. In my defense, I’ve been writing, which is a nice change of pace. In fact, I seem to have been taken by an Attack Book, so I’m going to run with it to the end and see how that goes.

We’ve finished watching season 3 of Miss Fisher, and were horrified to find that it was only 8 episodes long! Which we found out when the 8th episode ended and Netflix flipped to “what would you like to watch next”. We shrieked in horror and hav...
