A Study in Job
Who was the greatest man who ever lived? Was it Socrates, Lincoln, Gandhi, Beethoven, Shakespeare or Leonardo da Vinci? These are all great men, but Jesus said number one was John the Baptist. He said that there was none born of woman who was greater than John. But he didn’t invent anything, or paint, or write astute plays. He did, however, stand against evil, and like Lincoln and Gandhi, he was murdered for what believed.
It seems strange that if John was the greatest, that God wouldn’t have allowed him to be cut off in his prime. He could have easily stayed the hand of the executioner, but He didn’t. He could have opened the prison doors as He did with Peter, but He didn’t. Why didn’t God do a miracle for his number one? One thing we do know is that we don’t know why. As far as from a human perspective, intervention was certainly warranted, but for some reason there wasn’t a peep from Heaven.
Perhaps coming in a close second on the list of greatness is a man of whom most of the world has never heard. His name was Job, and this man had a best-selling biography written about him, despite the fact that it’s a book about pain and suffering.
Even though we try and fortify ourselves against suffering, each of us eventually proves to be like an aged house in a heavy rainstorm of trials. The constant drips keep coming through no matter how much we try and patch things up.
Job’s ceiling caved in. Although few of us will suffer to the degree in which he suffered, his biography sets an example of how we can best handle it when our roof caves in because it gives us a perspective on God’s thinking.

The Book of Job
For months I have been soaking myself in the book of Job. It really is an amazing book. The poor man’s servants were murdered, his possessions were stolen, all of his children were killed, and his health was removed. Job lost everything but his faith in God and a stubborn desire to have a personal audience with the Almighty. He wanted to ask God why such suffering had come his way. He wanted to talk face-to-face with his Creator.
When he finally got that personal audience, God didn't answer even one of Job's questions. Instead, He had 70 of His own. He wanted answers, and God gave him questions. But Job wasn’t disappointed. Neither will we be disappointed if we take the time to study them. Within these 70 questions from the mouth of Almighty God are hidden amazing scientific truths that were not discovered by this world until more than three thousand years later. The Book of Job is filled with comfort, remarkable knowledge, and wisdom of which the world knows nothing---precious gems that bring with them the most profound of implications.
So over the next few months, starting Monday, we will look closely at Job, and it’s my hope that its wonderful truths bless and minister to you, as they have to me.

Lawlessness abounds.

“As long as the Church is silent about the moral Law, and fearful to speak up about the reality of Judgment Day and of Hell, the preaching of the cross will be a mystery to our blind and sinful world. The cure is of no value to the patient when the doctor is afraid to talk to him about the disease. May we take courage and lift up our voices like a trumpet, and show this people their transgressions. May we preach Christ crucified for this dying world, and may God have mercy upon America.”

Heart Changer.

“Listen to what the Bible says in Genesis 9:6 says: ‘Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man.’ You can’t murder a horse, a cat or a cow. You can kill them, but you can’t murder them. The word ‘murder’ is reserved for human beings, because we are ‘made in the image of God.’ We are unique among creation. We set up court systems and spend billions to bring criminals to justice. Animals don’t do that. But we do it because God has made us in His image, and He has given us a sense of right and wrong. We are not mere animals, as evolution believers would have us believe. We are uniquely moral. We therefore have moral responsibility, and will be held accountable by God, both as a nation and as individuals.
“Johnny, I see some frightening parallels between what happened in Germany and what’s happening now in the United States. Hitler killed six million Jews, but we have slaughtered ten times that amount through legalized abortion. When Germany was deeply in debt the German people turned to a charismatic politician as their savior, rather than to God. There were only a few Jeremiah’s in those days that had the courage to preach about sin and the need to repent, and most of them were killed off for what they said. We are in a similar plight right now. We are in an unprecedented economic crisis, and many (even within the Church) are looking for a savior...someone who will help us out of our fiscal chaos. We want a godly man in the White House. We want a politician that will stand up for that which is right and just, but when we look at the Church of the Book of Acts, we don’t see them pinning their hopes in politics. Their hope was only in God, and they uncompromisingly proclaimed the Gospel of Salvation. Their number one concern was that men and women would be saved from a very real Hell. That agenda was far more important to them than the nation’s economy. They were seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, because they knew that the “economic” need of food and clothing would be added to those who obey the gospel. They knew that when a man or woman is born again, their heart changes. When someone is regenerated by the Holy Spirit they love the things that God loves, and hate the things that God hates. When we talk to people about abortion, we don’t want them saying, ‘You are right. You have convinced me. I’m now pro-life, but I’m still pro-homosexual marriage and pro-pornography.’ Arguments may change a man’s mind, politics may change his government, but the gospel changes his heart. If we can get the engine on the right track, the carriages of this nation’s worldview will come into line.

Seared conscience?

“But,” said Jonathan, “Why would so many conspire to deceive millions of others?”
“Good question. The Bible is a very real threat to the lifestyles of a sin-loving world. Think of it…if Genesis is true, then the concept of sin is real, and we are all morally responsible to our Creator. That throws a huge and heavy wet blanket on lust, pornography, gambling, lotteries, adultery, sex out of marriage and a thousand and one other sinful pleasures which the world loves and for which it lives. So you can be sure that they are going to fight tooth and nail to keep the freedom and right to enjoy life as they see it. That means the censorship of Christianity and the promotion of a theory dressed up as scientific fact.
“When you press a reasonable believer of Darwinian evolution for what was in the beginning (the First Cause), he will admit that he doesn’t know. In the name of science, he will plead ignorance, and add, “The scientific world hasn’t discovered that yet. But it will one day.” Where did male and female come from in all 1.4 million kinds of animal, bird, insect and fish? He doesn’t know. Why does every animal bring forth after its own kind? He doesn’t know. And why is all of nature fully ‘evolved’ to a point of working maturity? He doesn’t know. He really means, ‘I don’t care. He’s not seeking the truth.” He means, “This is my worldview, and I am staying with it because it gives me an open doorway to sexual pleasure, and there’s no way I’m going to let you shut that door.’
“So when your girlfriend terminated her pregnancy, she took the life of your child and my grandchild, and it’s right that you are thinking about this. What she did was very serious.”
Jeremiah stood up again and looked at his trusty bookshelf. His eyes ran across it once again, and he said, “Let me read something to you….” He reached up to a high shelf, pulled out a book and opened it at a marked page. “This is a quote from Walter Mattner, a police secretary from Vienna. It’s from a letter he wrote to his wife…dated October 1941…when 2,273 Jews were shot to death in Mogilyov in Belarus:
‘My hand was shaking a bit with the first cars. By the tenth car, I was aiming calmly and shooting dependably at the many women, children and babies. Bearing in mind that I have two babies at home, I knew that they would suffer exactly the same treatment, if not ten times as bad, at the hands of these hordes.’ [1]
“That’s what can happen to human beings when we do something that is morally wrong. The voice of our God-given conscience speaks to us, but if we ignore it, it becomes hardened. The Bible uses the word “sear” when it comes to a hardened conscience. We sear meat by cooking it on the outside only. So when we sear our conscience we only superficially harden it. It’s still there but its voice has been silenced. It’s like a smoke detector. If we don’t like the sound of its alarm, we remove the batteries. That’s what happened to that police secretary. It’s what happened to the German nation when it came to the Jews, and that’s what has happened in America when it comes to the slaughter of babies in the womb. Our hearts have become hardened and callous.

Legitimate license to kill.

“The Theory of Evolution gave what Hitler saw as a legitimate license to kill off those for which he considered to be inferior--six million Jews, Gypsies, people of dark skin, homosexuals and others, and at the same time reap the benefit of increased popularity and of billions of dollars for his war machine. And that’s why so many tolerate the elimination of what it is in the womb. It’s no big deal. There’s no ultimate right or wrong. We’re just animals, and animals often kill their offspring.”
Jonathan was quiet for a moment, then thoughtfully lifted his hand and gestured, “Still playing the devil’s advocate. Hasn’t evolution been proven? Isn’t it a scientific fact? We are just primates.”

"Final Solution"

‘In my thirty-six years in pediatric surgery I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother's life.’ He said that if someone’s life was in danger they would simply induce the child or perform a cesarean section. They would save the life of both the mother and the child, and not kill the baby. Why would they do that?”
Jonathan sat wide-eyed. “I’ve never heard this stuff before. All I have ever hear is that this is a woman’s choice. How could I have been so deceived?”
Jeremiah was quick to respond, “Because you and millions of others have been brainwashed, just like Hitler brainwashed the Germans. You’ve only been given one perspective—the perspective from which they want you to see. I once saw aebusiness sign that said, ‘We would rather do business with one thousand Al Qaeda terrorists than with one American soldier.’ When I saw that sign, I was furious. I began thinking that these people—whoever they were—didn’t deserve to live in this country. Then I saw something that made me do a complete 180. The sign was outside a funeral home. When I saw that, I immediately smiled and said, ‘I love these people. God bless them.’ It was knowledge that gave me another perspective and completely changed my mind, in seconds.
“For years, your secular education gave you only one perspective. Abortion was a woman’s right and removing whatever it was in the womb was no big deal. At the same time you were told that there were no moral absolutes…that we are the product of chance. You were bombarded with Darwinian evolution, not just from the National Geographic Society, but from every area of society—from magazines to museums, to magazines and books, TV programs . . . every area of modern civilization told you that you were just an evolved primate, that you weren’t made in the image of God as is taught in Scripture, and the Bible is just a history book filled with myths, and those who believe it are unscientific morons.
“I’m sure you are familiar with the phrase ‘Survival of the fittest’.”
“Yes. If I remember rightly, when speaking of the process of evolution Charles Darwin used it…I think it was in the fifth edition of, On the Origin of Species. But modern biology doesn’t use that any more. It’s not accurate. They now call the process ‘Natural Selection’.”
Jeremiah nodded, and said, “Yes they do, but the two mean the same thing. I think I know why they changed it. ‘Survival of the Fittest’ is easily linked to Hitler’s killing of the weak and letting what he consider the fittest, to survive. In, The Descent of Man Darwin said that as human beings, we allow ‘the weak members of civilized society to propagate their kind.’ In other words we let the weak and inferior breed. He said that this ‘leads to the degeneration of a domestic race.’ Then he added ‘hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed’.” [1]
“Hitler picked it up in Mein Kemf. He said, ‘If Nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with the stronger, she wishes even less that a superior race should intermingle with an inferior one; because in such a case all her efforts, throughout hundreds of thousands of years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may thus be rendered futile.’[2] In other words, human evolution would be futile, if inferior weaker individuals are allowed to breed with the superior. Adolf Hitler took Darwinian evolution to its logical conclusion. He didn’t let what he considered the worst animals (the ‘inferior races’) to breed. He killed them. That was his ‘Final Solution’. And he didn’t confine his killing to the Jews. Nazi leaders often used terms such as ‘superior race’, ‘lower human types’, ‘pollution of the race’, and the word evolution itself (Entwicklung).

Hitler made billions from killing Jews...

Jonathan widened his eyes, took a deep breath and thoughtfully said, “Don’t get me wrong here dad. But let me play devil’s advocate for a minute. Isn’t the point here, the question of when it becomes a human being in the womb? If it is just a clump of cells, then there’s no comparison to Hitler and the Holocaust. When does science say that it becomes a baby? And what about rape? And what about the issue of the mother’s life being in danger?”
Jeremiah stood up and walked to his vast library that spanned half the length of the living room wall. He ran his eyes along at eye-level for a moment and said, “Ah, there it is! This is published by the National Geographic Society. These are the folks who insist on saying that there’s proof that we have a common ancestor with primates. This book is called, In the Womb. It gives a unique look into the world of a child, beginning at conception to full term, visible through ultrasound and electron microscope pictures. This is what it says about the baby at 12 weeks, when its 3.4 inches in length. He opened the book at a marked page, and read. [The baby has]:
Essential organs basically formed.Circulatory system working.Sex distinguishable externally.Well-defined neck.Red blood cells are produced in the liver.Fist can be made with the fingers. [1]“At 12 weeks the baby has eyelids, ears, toes, a fully-formed mouth, fingernails, fingerprints, he or she responds to stimulation, and the heart has been fully developed and beating since the 21st day. So there’s no question as to when life begins. At the very moment of conception the DNA is sparked. Right at that point of time your eye and hair color, height, skin, blood-type and personality are in place. Science tells us that life has begun.
“Now to the question about rape and abortion. We now know that this is an individual human life in the mother’s womb. It’s not her body at all. It’s not a kidney or a liver. This is a separate human being living within her body with separate DNA, just as she was once an individual human being living in her mother’s body. So why would you want to kill the baby for the crime of the father? It’s the father who committed the crime of rape. He is the criminal, so why kill the innocent child? Do you think it’s right to execute an innocent man on death row, when you know that he didn’t commit the crime? Instead, support the woman and have the innocent baby adopted rather than murdered.
