What Shapes You?

Christ is risen! I HATE clutter. It makes me miserable because it makes me feel like I’m out of control. And yet, I’ve known people who are actually calmed by clutter. It makes them feel “at home.” So, when I’m communicating with these kinds of people, I have to remember that not everyone is like me (thank GOD!) But I’ve caught myself becoming frustrated and even angry before I discipline my passions…

That Heavenly Vision

Christ is risen! Did you know that today is the day we commemorate a miracle? Well, technically we commemorate a miracle every day. Every day is an invitation to know God deeper! Today we remember the appearance of the Holy Cross over the city of Jerusalem. St. Cyril writes “At about the third hour of the day, an enormous Cross, formed of light, appeared in the heaven above holy Golgotha and reaching…

Not Them Too!

Christ is risen! There’s a great Country song from 1994 performed by Tim McGraw called “Don’t Take the Girl” and it tells the story of how a young man’s attitude toward the “fairer” sex changes as you get older. But the first part of the song as a young boy begging his dad not to take the neighborhood girl along with them on their fishing trip! When little Johnny hears his dad…

Playing Favorites

Christ is risen! I grew up in the volatile 1960’s when the Civil Rights movement was really getting traction. I watched as a boy as marches and riots occurred around the country and our nation struggled with throwing off the scourge of racism. By the way, how is it possible that the pigmentation of someone’s skin could make them less a human than someone else? It was a troubled time. And, as…

Diverse & Strange Teachings

Christ is risen! “Nobody told me there’d be days like these!” Well, that not exactly true. St. Paul did warn that “in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness…

We Are Here to Hear

Christ is risen! “Can you hear me now?” That famous commercial question was meant to show that one cell phone carrier was better than another. Of course, those were the days of dropped calls and out of range service areas. I, personally haven’t had that kind of problem in quite some time. But, there also seems to be a deep problem with listening in our lives. While we certainly can hear a…

Eternal Rescue vs. Temporary Rescue

Christ is risen! We learn how to make all of life sacred by making one moment of our life sacred. While that may really sound paradoxical, it makes perfect sense when you consider that it’s only by a focused effort I can wake up to a wider truth. If I try to take in the whole world, eternity, and all things, I get overwhelmed. Why do you think we are so impassioned…

Living Bread vs. Daily Bread

Christ is risen! In the ancient Roman Empire there were three charges the authorities used to persecute the early Christians: 1. They were Atheists – You see, the Christians didn’t believe in the pagan gods. 2. They were incestuous – They had weekly “love feasts” and called each other brother and sister. 3. They were cannibals – They ate someone’s flesh and drank someone’s blood. Talk about misinformation! And yet, in the…

They Thought They Knew Him

Christ is risen! It was both amusing and, yes, a bit hurtful. We were having an argument. It was one of those arguments that got real personal real fast. You know the kind of arguments between people who are family and think they really know each other well. Well, my relative did know me well a few decades ago but had really lost touch with me as I became a more mature…
