Classic Movie Monthly #2 Now Available

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera

I actually made my self-imposed deadline of October 20 with Classic Movie Monthly #2, but I didn't want to bug you about it until after Monday's Helen Twelvetrees TCM marathon had run.

Anyway, Classic Movie Monthly #2 is now available for your Kindle (or other reading device, see details on Amazon page). I think that the best way to announce these going forward is to preview the issue by reprinting the introduction page....

My Woman (1933) Starring Helen Twelvetrees, Wallace Ford

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera

This is a reprint of Part 2, Chapter 19 of my book Helen Twelvetrees, Perfect Ingenue. It replaces a 2009 article that I found a bit lacking. My Woman is one of six Helen Twelvetrees movies playing on Turner Classic Movies, October 24, 2016—I'll send you a more complete reminder and preview of this mini-marathon on Saturday morning.

Slated to star Nancy Carroll and Donald Cook under original title Goin’ to Town, but wound...

Man Made Monster (1941) Introduces Lon Chaney Jr to Universal Horror

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera

“I believe that electricity is life. That men can be motivated and controlled by electrical impulse supplied by the radioactivities of the electron. That eventually, a race of superior men could be developed. Men whose only wants are electricity.”

Lionel Atwill in Man Made Monster

Even had you never seen either actor before, you would have to question how Doctors Lawrence and Rigas could effectively partner in such...

New Gallery: 1935 Godfrey Phillips Stage and Cinema Beauties

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera

I'm not quite sure how I allowed so much time to pass, but today's post points to the first new Immortal Ephemera collectible gallery created since July 2014.

(New gallery here)

My card and collectible galleries were once the meat and potatoes of the site—they number over 250 pages—but somehow they've evaded my notice over the past couple of years. Just in case this section of the site has also slipped from your memory, y...

Change of Heart (1934) Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell One Last Time

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera

I watched in anticipation of youth struggling against Depression-era Manhattan. There was some struggle and several shots of city streets and elevated trains, but Change of Heart was much more about its characters. I found myself surprised to fall in love with a scene featuring leading man Charles Farrell flat on his back in bed while his very familiar costar Janet Gaynor shaved him.

Special Investigator (1936) – Richard Dix Stars in Erle Stanley Gardner Story

Written by Cliff Aliperti and originally published on Immortal Ephemera Richard Dix in Special Investigator

Above: Richard Dix in Special Investigator.

A diamond in the rough or, to be more obvious about it, a gold bar under the floorboard, Special Investigator is a 61-minute “B” entry starring Richard Dix in the final movie of his second RKO contract.

Special Investigator is a fast-paced plot-driven film from an original story by Perry Mason author Erle Stanley Gardner. If you’d like to read the story that it was based upon,...

Picto-Sked returns for its final installment of TCM's Summer Under the Stars, 2016. Back to our usual programming after this one, but I just couldn't skip Karloff!

Twenty-four hours of Boris Karloff movies begin on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Friday morning at 6:00 ET. There are seventeen Karloff movies playing during the 2016 Summer Under the Stars celebration, and fifteen of those were released between 1931-1947.
