"Whoever": In 1 John

Last week I posted some notes on the "if . . . then" clauses in 1 John. John uses a similar formula with a construction translated in English as "whoever": whoever does or does not do X, then Y is true or commanded of him. Here is a breakdown along these lines (using the ESV).

Whoever: Righteousness

2:5
Whoever
keeps [Christ's]  word
in him truly the love of God is perfected

2:6
Whoever
says he abides in [Christ]
ought to walk in the same way in which he walked

2:10
Whoever
loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling

2:17
Whoever
does the will of God
abides forever

2:23
Whoever
confesses the Son
has the Father also

3:7
Whoever
practices righteousness
is righteous, as he is righteous

3:24
Whoever
keep[God's]  commandments
abides in God, and God in him

4:6
Whoever
knows God
listens to us

4:7
Whoever
loves
has been born of God and knows God

4:15
Whoever
confesses that Jesus is the Son of God
God abides in him, and he in God.

4:16
Whoever
abides in love
abides in God, and God abides in him

4:18
Whoever
fears
has not been perfected in love

4:21
Whoever
loves God
must also love his brother

5:12
Whoever
has the Son
has life

Whoever: Unrighteousness

2:4
Whoever
says "I know [Christ]" but does not keep his commandments
is a liar, and the truth is not in him

2:11
Whoever
hates his brother
is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going

3:8
Whoever
makes a practice of sinning
is of the devil

3:10
Whoever
does not practice righteousness
is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother

3:14
Whoever
does not love
abides in death

4:6
Whoever
is not from God
does not listen to us

5:10
Whoever
does not believe God
has made [God] a liar

5:12
Whoever
does not has the Son
does not has life

Something to Celebrate in American Politics

I don't find much of what goes on in politics all that encouraging or inspiring these days. But when a grown-up proposal is on the table—especially on the precipice of a financial crisis— it's worth stopping to celebrate.

David Brooks:

Today, Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, is scheduled to release the most comprehensive and most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes. . . . His proposal will set the standard of seriousness for anybody who wants to play in this discussion. . . . Paul Ryan has grasped reality with both hands. He's forcing everybody else to do the same.

Ross Douthat:

This is how we should want all our legislators to approach the people's business, whether they're liberal or conservative or somewhere in between — putting what they consider good policy above what everyone else in their party considers good politics. Too few of them do. But for the ones who try to make real substance their touchstone, rather than just partisan advantage, today should be a hopeful day.

Hope Fellowship

Congratulations to my friend Jeff Brewer, who is planting Hope Fellowship in Lombard, Illinois, and launching this Sunday. This Acts29 candidate church is being planted out of College Church in Wheaton.

For those who might live in or near Lombard, I have no hesitation in recommending this as a gospel-centered church with good theology and an evangelistic ethos.

May God be pleased to do more than we can think or imagine!

"Did Jesus Really Say/Do That?"

For those in the western suburbs of Chicago, here's an evangelistic opportunity to consider. This Saturday Dr. Peter Williams (Warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge) will be doing a local talk on "Did Jesus Really Say/Do That?"

I hope others around the country will replicate what the Fox Valley Theological Society is doing: they sponsor public lectures (say in a public library) on gospel-related issues to which you can invite unbelieving friends.

More info below—followed by a video of Dr. Williams talking about the indicators of eyewitness testimony in the Gospels.

Did Jesus Really Say/Do That? Did the gospel writers have access to eyewitness testimony?

Did Jesus' biographers—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—record actual historical events? Was that even their goal? Were they capable historians? Or were they motivated more by their own historical circumstances decades after Jesus' life and work? How can we know? Theories abound about how much of "the historical Jesus" is available to us today. Join us as Dr. Williams, internationally renowned linguist and scholar, explores whether the gospel writers had access to eyewitness testimony and the difference that makes for reading these historically important documents.

Saturday, April 9th, 10:00am – Noon

Our Speaker

Dr. Peter J. Williams (MA, MPhil, PhD, University of Cambridge) is the Warden (CEO) of Tyndale House, Cambridge, UK, a world-leading evangelical center for biblical research. He has been a Research Fellow at Tyndale House, and served on the faculties of the University of Cambridge and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where he became a Senior Lecturer in New Testament. In addition to his current work at Tyndale House, Pete is also a member of the Translation Oversight Committee of the English Standard Version of the Bible, chairman of the International Greek New Testament Project, honorary Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies at the University of Aberdeen, and Affiliated Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. His passion is encouraging historical awareness and proper understanding of the Christian scriptures. He is married to Kathryn with two children, Magdalena and Leo. The FVTS is privileged and honored to have a scholar of such international achievement speak to us about the historicity of the gospels.
