PAPERBACK RELEASE: SO MUCH A PART OF YOU

Picture SO MUCH A PART OF YOU, BY POLLY DUGAN
Published by Little, Brown
256 pp. $14.99

Disclaimer: I originally wrote this review last June, when the book was first published, for the Spencer Daily Reporter.

I'll be honest, I was not expecting a collection of short stories with this book. Sometimes it's hard to go into a book without a set of preconceived notions; sometimes it's more fun to know what you're getting yourself into, but sometimes it's unavoidable. But I also like the feeling of discovery...

IN ANY ROULETTE, YOU'LL EVENTUALLY FIND THE BULLET (OR, READING WAR & PEACE)

I sent out the title as a tweet last night when I looked at my book shelf and realized that my book roulette (which I should have a post about soon) landed on Leo Tolstoy's War & Peace.

In my personal book roulette, this is the proverbial bullet.

War & Peace is 1,424 pages long. Even at the high-arching dream of reading 100 pages a day (always a goal, not always a reality) this book would still take me two weeks to read. But here's why I'll read it:

1. It's number came up. As I mentioned earlie...

INDIE REVIEW: THE ARGENT STAR

Picture I thought I'd try something new when it comes to reviewing books (actually, retry something I've done on a different blog). I don't really have a concrete format for reviewing, because I don't use "thumbs" or stars or any other form of reading. It's a method I call "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly" because it sounds snappy and it works how I need it to. I don't want to ever get into a system where I act like, or assume the position of, the be-all-end-all when it comes to reading. I offer my o...

PAPERBACK: NOW I SEE YOU

Picture Guys, I loved this book. I reviewed it for the Daily Reporter last year, and I even made it part of my Top 5 Books of 2014. Nicole Kear took what could have been a very somber story -- a memoir of her experience with a degenerative eye condition -- and turned it on its end in the best possible way.

Kear was diagnosed with the condition as a young girl, and spent the next several years refusing to let it affect the way she lived. She would not tell anyone about it, all the while her vision was...

REVIEW: LOVE MAY FAIL

Picture My relationship with Matthew Quick has been reluctant. I didn't really like Silver Lining's Playbook, probably because I saw the movie first and then read the book. But I knew he was highly celebrated, so I gave The Good Luck of Right Nowa shot. Better. Definitely better -- a little on the quirky side, but unique and readable.

After all that, why not try Love May Fail? Honestly, there is no excuse not to read this book. I loved it, absolutely my favorite by far.

Quick pays tribute to those tea...
